Amazon Book Search Boosting Sales So Far

Amazon Book Search Boosting Sales So Far 10/31/2003 01:39 AM
Amazon today was excited to announce that in the first week of their full-text book searching service, books in the service sold 9% better than those not in the search. While I do think the service is great, and I'm sure it will boost sales, I'm not sure these numbers mean anything. There was definitely a big boost in usage of this service due to the ton of publicity it received. So, let's see how it's doing a few months down the road, and then it might be worth talking about. In the meantime, various authors are sti ll complaining about the service. They quote an author of a travel book who is worried that readers only want a couple of sections and would print those out and never buy the book. I guess he hasn't been ot the library lately. If people just need a couple pages out of his book, they're not going to buy the book anyway.

Google and Search Inside the Book

Google and Search Inside the Book 10/30/2003 10:22 AM
You probably know by now that Amazon has released the first of its A9 search offerings: Search Inside the Book. (If you don't, basically when you search on Amazon it searches the full text of thousands of books, and points you not only to the book, but to scanned copies of all the pages that match your search.) So what should Google do? This is a perfect time to cut a deal with Amazon: Amazon lets them index the text of all these books, and in return, Google sends tons of customers to Amazon's door. Putting the books in the search results wouldn't be any different than the search results already provided by Amazon, so there wouldn't be any copyright or lost-sales problems. Despite the amazingness of the Web, there's still some stuff you can find only in books. Google wouldn't be living up to their mission (to organize all the world's information) if they passed up this amazing opportunity....

The Legality Of Amazon's Search The Book
Feature

The Legality Of Amazon's Search The Book
Feature
11/11/2003 10:32 AM
Who better to discuss the legality of Amazon's new full text search feature, than a copyright lawyer who is also an author? Over at News.com, Doug Isenberg points out that if you happen to do a search on the system of "fair use" and "internet", you'll actually get the passage from his book describing how one of the determinants of whether or not something is fair use is how it impacts the sales of the book. So, while he's was a bit surprised, as an author, to find out his entire book was online via Amazon, it's probably perfectly legal. In fact, he says that the publishers probably do have the right to make that call (no matter what the Authors Guild says), though he admits that almost no one probably thought about this potential use of their work when they signed their publishing deal.

Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing
Off Book Retailers
02/13/2004 05:52 AM
One of the struggles that companies have as distribution and sales mechanisms change is handling legacy channel conflict issues. Dell became huge by selling direct to customers, but when rival Compaq started to move in that direction, their retail partners freaked out - and Compaq had to scale back their plans. It appears that book publishers are now going through the same process. They've realized that if someone is looking for info about certain books on their site, it makes sense to also offer them a chance to buy it. However, it's pissing off retailers, who don't want to hear that their suppliers are competing with them. Retailers say a reasonable compromise would be having the publishers point to the retailers, which was my first response as well. However, then it becomes a political situation of who do you link to and why? There's also the fact that this makes for a less enjoyable consumer experience. I know that, more than once, I've been annoyed at online sites where I go for info on buying a product, but when I try to buy am given a big list of retailers instead of a way to buy right away.

ActiveWin.com Book of the Day: Inside
Intuit: How the Makers of Quicken Beat
Microsoft and Revolutionized an Entire
Industry
10/29/2003 12:10 AM
It's a modern-day David and Goliath story for the business world: a company dreamed up at a kitchen table, built on explosive PC growth, and forced to battle a giant in the race to revolutionize an industry. This is the story of Intuit, creator of renowned software products like Quicken, QuickBooks, and TurboTax-the company that beat mighty Microsoft and changed the way 25 million people manage their finances. Written by Intuit veteran Suzanne Taylor and seasoned business manager Kathy Schroeder-who were granted exclusive interviews with founder Scott Cook and other key figures- Inside Intuit tells this company's original and fascinating tale for the first time. The book vividly recounts each dramatic stage of Intuit's development: from initial conception to "bet the company" investments; from strokes of marketing genius to disastrous product launches; and from battles for survival to successive victories against arch-rival Microsoft-the company no one else could beat.

Stanford Magazine carries a story this month about our chairman and co-founder Lawrence Lessig's book which has just entered its third printing. This is interesting because the book is freely available online for download (under a Creative Commons license), and has been downloaded about 180,000 times. On the one hand an author can give away free content for folks to remake into audio books, translations, and other formats, and the author still gets paid through traditional book sales. Amazing how that works, and works so well sometimes. [via Copyfight]

Teaching CSS: there's a long way to go

Teaching CSS: there's a long way to go 11/19/2003 01:41 AM

This email to the css-discuss mailing list does a great job of describing the confusion and frustration that still confronts traditional web developers who are only just starting out on the road to mastering CSS. When you've "got it", it's easy to forget how much of a paradigm shift it is away from old school table methods. Here's an extract:

Step Eight.

Just when you think you're settling down into a slow and steady learning curve, this is about when you start getting emails from everyone who uses your site describing all kinds of variations on your layout as it has been interpreted by their varying browsers and platforms. This stage is the most important of all, the one where you realize that CSS support is far, far more random than any HTML workarounds that you've been dealing with for the (insert personal experience here) years you've been making web pages.

(Excerpt from an email from a user of one of my sites: "the new color and stuff on the homepage looks good, except on my computor [sic] some of the pages are cut off at the bottom and have big gaps in them")

Maybe a good analogy to make here is one with Linux: both are great in principle, but if you aren't comfortable with what you are doing you can run in to a whole bunch of problems. I wouldn't recommend anyone who is still on the CSS learning curve to move a big commercial project to pure CSS, just as I wouldn't suggest a Linux newbie start hosting their own internet facing server.

At any rate, it's obvious that we as a community still have a long way to go in creating useful resources for people who want to make the switch to CSS.

Blogpoly: From Monopoly to Blogpoly

“It is just a game. It is fun to use the board to lay out the Blogosphere Ecosystem. It helps me to think and learn about blogging culture by transforming the original game into this version. I had to think about which company and enterprise to choose and set up first on the board. The space is limited, so I picked well known names in blogging industry. Besides the private properties, there are two public utilities--the water works and the electric company. Then I thought of ‘Wikipedia’ and ‘Creative Commons’, and then a few more, making ‘criminal’ into ‘spammer’, ‘free parking’ into ‘free hosting’. ‘Chance’ and ‘community chest’ become ‘comment’ and ‘trackback’. Fun -- yes? There is not much difference for me transforming the game than writing a poem, using similes, metaphors and symbols.” [littleoslo, via Boing Boing]

Teaching the Test in Texas

Teaching the Test in Texas 12/03/2003 12:14 PM
Teach ing the Test
As a student at Jefferson Davis High here, Rosa Arevelo seemed the "Texas miracle" in motion. After years of classroom drills, she passed the high school exam required for graduation on her first try. A program of college prep courses earned her the designation "Texas scholar." At the University of Houston, though, Ms. Arevelo discovered the distance between what Texas public schools called success and what she needed to know. Trained to write five-paragraph "persuasive essays" for the state exam, she was stumped by her first writing assignment. She failed the college entrance exam in math twice, even with a year of remedial algebra. At 19, she gave up and went to trade school.

This doesn't look good for our new, unfunded, "Leave No Child Behind" education bill. Smells like another bait and switch to me.

Cory teaching Clarion in 2005

Cory teaching Clarion in 2005 07/28/2004 05:48 AM
In 1992, I graduated from the Clarion Writers' Workshop at Michigan State University, the famed six-week "boot-camp for science-fiction writers." It was an amazing experience: my instruction from the likes of Damon Knight, James Patrick Kelly, Lisa Goldstein, Nancy Kress and Kate Wilhelm forever changed me as a writer and a person.

Therefore, it is a stupendous honour to be able to announce that I will be returning to Clarion next year, as part of the 2005 roster of instructors. My co-instructors will be Joan Vinge, Charles Coleman Finlay, Gwyneth Jones, Walter John Williams and Leslie What.

Clarion is in transition this year, as funding cuts at MSU will require a change of venue. Here are some details:

Among the options being considered are moving the workshop to another university or becoming an independent non-profit organization, along the lines of Clarion West. In either event, Clarion is likely to leave its long-time home in East Lansing and is actively soliciting suggestions for new location(s) and offers from organizations or groups willing to host the workshop. “I think it’s past time for Clarion to make a transition to a new venue and a new structure,” said Board Member James Patrick Kelly. The Clarion Board is calling on alumni and friends of the workshop to volunteer to help with the transition. “We need to work on fundraising, communications, and administration,” said Kelly. “We’re encouraging people who believe in Clarion to get involved with everything from putting together our newsletter to helping choose the instructors and lots in between.” To that end, the Clarion Board of Directors, which currently consists of Matheson, Kelly, Kate Wilhelm, Maureen McHugh, Karen Joy Fowler, Tim Powers, and former Clarion director Tess Tavormina will be looking to reconstitute itself and expand its membership.
