concord_dv2020_5in1.jpg imageAnother convergence device from Concord called the DV2020, this one revolving around a 2-megapixel camera that also records digital video or can serve as a webcam, as well as work as a voice recorder and MP3 player. It has 16MB of internal storage, which isn't going to get you very far as a video camera, but accepts SD cards for additional storage. It's not really going to provide high-quality anything, but for $230 or so it might be a nice thing to throw in a bag and have with you just in case.

The pencil man of Concord

The pencil man of Concord 02/10/2004 02:44 AM

People said that London was a center of theater and music but this is my second night here and there doesn't seem to be much action in town.  Perhaps it was not London, Ontario to which folks referred.  Anyway, in between test-flying Diamond Star N505WT, I'm reading Th e Pencil by Henry Petroski, 354 pages that demonstrate conclusively that at least one area of history has been justifiably ignored.

It turns out that, before setting off for Harvard College, Henry David Thoreau devoted quite a bit of time to figuring out how to blend graphite powder and clay into a pencil that could compete with the best English and French products.  He and his father were very successful pencil merchants in the 1840s.  As cheap German imports made the business less profitable the Thoreaus moved into supplying graphite powder for electrotype printing.  In 1853 Thoreau's friends asked him why he'd stopped making pencils.  He responded "Why should I?  I would not do again what I have done once."

Taking The Camera Out Of The Camera
Phone

Taking The Camera Out Of The Camera
Phone
11/04/2003 07:06 PM
We've had a lot of stories in the last six months or so about shortsighted companies deciding to simply ban camera phones outright. In the past, I wondered if such rules would have an impact on mobile phone sales, but I didn't expect the carriers to jump on this topic so quickly. Put me in the same surprised boat as Alan Reiter to hear that carriers are convincing mobile phone handset makers to offer multiple versions of their phones: one with a camera and the other without. I really thought that with only a few companies overreacting and missing the point about camera phones, it would blow over, and a decade from now we'd be laughing at silly companies banning camera phones. At this rate, that might not be true. This is going to be a huge waste of money. Designing a new phone will take some money, and will create a phone that offers less value to the customer (and less opportunity for revenue for the carrier). However as camera phones begin to find more acceptance in the marketplace, people are going to get angry when their boss tells them the expensive phone they just bought can't be brought into the office. They're not going to want to buy the version without the camera if part of the reason they're upgrading is for the camera in the first place. This is a (costly) over reaction to a technology that will do nothing to stop the real problem (theft of corporate secrets or invasion of privacy), but will cost lots of money and anger many people.

Thomas Keller and Per Se

Thomas Keller and Per Se 05/17/2004 02:42 PM

Big article in New York about my favorite chef Thomas Keller and his new restaurant in New York City, The Perfectionist Gets Burned: How Thomas Keller survived the fire that almost took down Per Se.

"Just the other day, Thomas was so proud to show me how they use painter's tape in the kitchen," [The French Laundry Cookbook co-author Michael] Ruhlman says, visiting the Per Se kitchen one afternoon. Instead of tearing the tape from the roll to, say, label the plastic deli cups that hold the ingredients at each mise en place, every strip of tape at Per Se is cut with scissors, every edge perfectly straight. Immaculate. "Because it's all one thing to Thomas. You can't be lax in one area and perfect in another.

"It's not about the sweeping vision," Ruhlman adds. "It's about the minute vision. There are no big decisions. A great restaurant is the result of a thousand little decisions. A place like this is just composed of details. It's a pointillist picture. So every night after service, you'll see Thomas down on his knees, scrubbing out the cupboards."

Ah, that sounds like the Thomas Keller who charmed me as I read Michael Rhulman's wonderful book, The Soul of a Chef: The Journey Toward Perfection. I love the minute vision, the focus on the thousand little decisions, making sure each one is as right as it can be. Of course, such perfectionism is exhausting, but I think that's just how I'm made. And reading this makes me want to take back what I said the other day about not wanting to eat at Per Se. Maybe I do after all...

Dan Bricklin points to Chris Daly's Are Bloggers Journalists? Let's Ask Thomas Jeffeson. Here's a snippet that Dan pulls out of the article: Common Sense and other pamphlets like it were precisely the kind of political journalism that Jefferson had in mind when he insisted on a constitutional amendment in 1790 to protect press freedom — anonymous, highly opinionated writing from diverse, independent sources. In historical terms, today's bloggers are much closer in spirit to the Revolutionary-era pamphleteers than today's giant, conglomerate mainstream media. Both Chris' piece and Dan's discussion of it are well worth reading... [Technorati tags: blogs bricklin...

Interview with Dilip Thomas of WROX
about PHP

Interview with Dilip Thomas of WROX
about PHP
02/07/2003 09:40 AM
Interview with Dilip Thomas of WROX about PHP Ivan, of the new PHP Traveller blog, just published a good interview about WROX's direction with their PHP books: Q: You seem to have been very busy publishing PHP books. Are there any other books about PHP in the works? Dilip Thomas: There are *many* more PHP books in the pipeline. We have a solid commitment to publishing the best PHP books, and that too on diverse topics. In my opinion, Wrox == PHP in the same sense as ORA == PERL. The next best PHP book to look out for is the "PHP MySQL Website Programming - Problem Design Solutions", that is slated to release in March '03 - It dissects the creation of a complete application driven website (using PHP/MySQL/Apache) from design to deployment (using the very popular Problem - Design - Solution approach). Q: What will "PHP Web Graphics Handbook" and "PHP String Handbook" be about? Dilip Thomas: Wrox Handbook's are new way of providing in-depth information on a specific task of a technology, by documenting the options, problems, best practices (to circumvent the problems) in that particular domain. It endeavours to be a reference for life and transgresses the rather shallow task-specific coverage that specific tasks are accorded to, in our Professional books. The "PHP Web Graphics Handbook" (scheduled for March '03) is an extension of the "Professional PHP Multimedia Programming" book that was released in September '02. It will show readers how to write PHP code that will create professional-looking web graphics and images "on the fly" (using GD, IM, netpbm, JpGraph etc). The "PHP String Handbook" will take a close look at text manipulation, and use of regular expressions in PHP. It will also cover advanced Regexes and patterns. [_Go_] Nice job. Thanks man. If I get a copy of these books from WROX, I'll publish a review. And WROX also now has WROXBASE, an equivalent to O'Reilly's Safari as best I can tell.
