Computing Pioneer Bob Bemer Passes On
Computing Pioneer Bob Bemer Passes On
06/25/2004 08:53 AM
Let's take a
moment to honor Bob Bemer, the man who, among other things, invented
the ASCII character system, named COBOL, put the backslash into
mainstream use, and developed what became the ESC key. He died
yesterday at 84 after a battle with cancer. Both technologies -- or at
least the technology and the concept, I guess -- have changed the way
we compute. If it weren't for people like Bemer, relative dabblers
like myself wouldn't have had such great hobbies and careers these
last few decades.
Bob Bemer, we give you a hearty :wq! May your compile be without
error, and may your shell be always 80 characters. ^D
