AP - A circus fan ever since his first Christy Bros. show in 1926, William R. Brinley has designed a miniature circus that features more than 5,000 carved figures and circus equipment. It spans 1,100 square feet, a world in which 3/4-inch equals 1 foot.

Tiny tiny 4GB hard drive 04/09/2004 04:11 PM
So you thought the 4GB IBM/Hitachi micro drives as used in the iPod mini are small? Toshiba is making a 4GB drive that is only 2.1cm (0.85 inch) in diameter. (via Macminute) Less than 10 years ago when I had my BBS and FidoNet hub "the Source!" (spelled that way) I had a much bigger disk with much less capacity that imploded. Henrik Jřrgensen came to the rescue, lending me a 4GB scsi disk and a scsi controller so I...

Town of Bourton's miniature model has a

Town of Bourton's miniature model has a
miniature model of the model (and so on)
12/23/2003 11:30 PM
Mark Bourne says: So my wife Elizabeth and I are googling up possibilities for our long trip to England next year. Checking out London sites and so on. An acquaintance suggested staying for a few days in the Cotswolds, a scenic Middle Earthy region west of London. That's how we found a page about the town of Bourton.

You just gotta love this text, which blends Ye Olde Scepter'd Isle with sci-fi gee-wizardry:

You will probably have noticed that when you take a branch from certain trees (some conifers for example), the branch looks like a miniature version of the tree, and when you break a piece off the branch, that looks like a tree too. Mathematicians call this property self-similarity.

Bourton has a wonderful example of self-similarity: it contains a 1/10 scale model of itself. Because the 1/10 scale model is a complete model of the town, it must contain a model of itself, and it does, a 1/100th. scale model of Bourton, and because the 1/100th. scale model is also a complete model of Bourton, it must also contain a 1/1000th. scale model of the scale model of the scale model of Bourton.

And it does. It is only a matter of time before a team of nano-technicians turn up in the town to etch a sub-micron scale model of Bourton on a silicon wafer, complete with mill, waterwheel, and a highly imaginative interpretation of the River Windrush as a stream of electrons.

Kosher for Passover circus

Kosher for Passover circus 04/10/2004 04:58 AM
Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey threw a Kosher-for-Passover circus at Madison Square Gardens for 19,0000 orthodox Jews, selling bun-less hot-dogs and hiding the female performers.
The Greatest Show on Earth had its ethnic flourishes. The band started the afternoon by playing "Dayenu," a rousing song at the Passover Seder that children love. And David Larible, the master clown they call the Prince of Laughter, wore a yarmulke to perform a miracle that more than one youngster must have thought was right up there with the parting of the Red Sea and the Ten Plagues: he turned another performer into a goat for several heart-stopping seconds.

Buy a Piece of Big Mac

Buy a Piece of Big Mac 02/12/2004 03:40 PM

You can now buy a piece of the history-making Virginia Tech Supercomputer. MacMall is selling refurbished Apple G5 computers that came from Virginia Tech. In my opinion the Apple-refurbished systems are priced a bit high at $2799, which is only $200 less than a new G5, but they do come with 1GB of memory (instead of the standard 512MB), plus a little history.

You'll recall that in June of 2003, VT made history by linking 1100 2MHz Dual Processor G5's together to create a low-cost supercomputer, known as System X (but nicknamed Big Mac.) System X made a big splash in the technical world by coming in third in the list of the Top 500 Supercomputers, and making it there at a fraction of the cost of many of the other entries on that list... System X cost a mere $7 million, compared to $250 million for the Japanese Earth Simulator Center's NEC-built 5120-CPU rig and $215 million for the Los Alamos National Laboratory's 8192-chip AlphaServer-based ASCI-Q machine.

Last month Virginia Tech took delivery of 1100 new xServe G5's to replace the original G5 towers. The xServes will benefit the project by yielding the same horsepower but only taking up 1 unit of rack space, requiring only 1000 square feet of space compared to the 3000 used by the original System X. The xServes also run cooler and have a lower power usage, which should save VT a bundle on electricity and cooling.
