The dangers of PageRank
The dangers of PageRank
02/10/2004 02:44 AMA well documented side effect of the weblog format is that it
brings Google PageRank in almost absurd quantities. I'm now the 5th
result for simon on Google, and I've been the
top result for simon
willison almost since the day I launched. High rankings however
are not always a good thing, especially when combined with a comment
system. A growing number of bloggers have found themselves at the top
position for terms of little or no relevance to the rest of their
sites, which in turn can attract truly surreal comments from visitors
from search engines who may never have encountered a blog before.
I know of a couple of entries on my own blog that are attracting
this kind of traffic. The most interesting is probably
this entry on artifical diamonds,
which has attracted comments from both buyers and sellers of
artificial gems. My entry on MSN messenger usability problems from 2002
has drawn a steady stream of hilarious comments, no doubt caused in
part by its top rating on Google for msn messenger sucks. Amusingly, for a
long time Microsoft's own search
engine was giving my page a high rank for a wide variety of less
negative messenger related terms.
My own experiences of this phenomenon pale in to significance to
some of the others I've seen. The most impressive example has to be
Jason Kottke's brief
review of the Matrix Reloaded, which drew over 900 comments from
Google strays, developed its own micro-community and resulted in Jason
pondering who
owns the conversation on my web site? Jason eventually deciding to
close and archive the thread after the page grew to more than a
megabyte in size.
The problem can take on a far more disturbing twist. I won't link
directly to these entries for fear of adding to their predicaments,
but searches for crime scene cleanup and
suicide chat rooms both
return blogs in the first two results. The former thread is mostly
crime scene cleanup companies marketing their services, but the latter
is quite frankly disturbing. It's certainly lead me to double check
the titles of my entries before posting them.
Thankfully, avoiding this kind of unwanted comment traffic is
pretty simple. One way is to simply disable comments for entries older
than a certain time (generally a couple of weeks), although personally
I like to see the occasional comment on old entries. A neater solution
proposed by Russell Beattie last year is to simply hide comments from search engine referrals, thus
ensuring that random strays won't leave their mark without
understanding the nature of your site first.

More on Gmail's Virtues and Dangers
More on Gmail's Virtues and Dangers
04/17/2004 09:57 AMTim O'Reilly finds much to praise in
Google's upcoming Gmail service, and is much less concerned about the
privacy issues than I am.
We agree totally, however on a crucial issue: preventing data lock-in.
He says:
"The big question to me isn't privacy, or
control over software APIs, it's who will own the data. What's
critical is that gmail makes a commitment to data migration
capabilities, so the service isn't a one way door to the future. I
want to be able to switch to alternate providers if the competition
makes a better offer. The critical enabler is going to be the ability
to extract my data and connections so that I can work with them on
multiple devices, for example, syncing my laptop or phone with my
gmail account rather than having to work only in a tethered fashion. I
understand why gmail doesn't offer this feature now, but it's going to
be essential in the long term."
Amen.

Alcohol is the new crack!
Alcohol is the new crack!
01/02/2005 11:10 PM
“N
ot only is it illegal, but it's becoming increasingly dangerous,”
Leggio said of underage drinking. How dangerous? Well apparently
dangerous enough that one affluent Kansas City community has decided
that it is best to have police spy on teens during high school
basketball games. Oh it gets better, apparently a carload of teens is
enough for a Lenexa cop to follow you! So the parents should be up in
arms right? Nope, they encourage the police, even calling them
("she told dispatchers that when she called home to check on her
son, it sounded like a party was going on"). Yet surprisingly,
despite this almost police-state like mentality against drinking,
atti
tudes are slow to change.

So, no oysters or alcohol
02/11/2004 07:01 PMI've missed most of the morning's presentations and spent the time
either hugging a pillow or the porcelaine thing in the toilet, you
know, the one where you put things and they disappear with a
"whoosh". It can't be a hangover - I had two glasses of
wine and a beer yesterday - so I'm wagering on some sort of a food
poisoning. I almost threw up during
Pe
rtti Korhonen's presentation in the morning - that would've
certainly created some excitement. :-)
Gah.
I dared to have a bit of rather excellent tomato-basil soup for lunch,
but I feel that we are still negotiating whether the soup should have
rights to a bit of fresh air every now and then.
The crappy thing about these conferences is that if you are not in
100%, you suddenly feel like an outsider real fast. Everybody's
talking about "the great presentation" from the morning, or
talking about the slide... And you are completely out of it.
Not to mention the precious moments you could've used to talk to the
wonderful minds that have been collected here.

Fatal Vision Beer Goggles
Fatal Vision Beer Goggles
08/12/2004 03:25 PM
If you've been dying to experience the trippy visual
distortion or the impaired driving ability of being drunk without the
side effects people usually get drunk for, you're in luck. Fatal
Vision, a company focused on impairment education, has created "beer
goggles" and a vehicle which will do just that.
Four different levels of intoxication are simulated by an equal
number of goggle types, ranging from a blood alcohol content level of
less than .06 to greater than .2. SIDNE, the vehicle, has a delayed
response to actions in order to simulate drunk driving. And at $8,495,
its a bargain in comparison to downing a couple of margaritas!
Naturally, lengthy disclaimers on the site make it clear that these
precise numbers are bunk. The goggles and car "demonstrate the concept
of impairment and the dangers of impaired driving" -- but don't
precisely simulate said effect.
At $149 a pop, the "beer goggles" are one expensive trip toy. But
what I want to know is: will they make ugly people more attractive?
Because if so, I know some married people who could use them.

IT company gives workers free beer -

08/05/2004 02:31 PMA US software company that gives its workers free beer on Friday
afternoons has been named the "Best Small Company to Work for in
America".
Analytical Graphics, Inc (AGI) also gives workers access to a free
laundry service, free meals - breakfast, lunch and dinner - all week
and access to free snacks, confectionary and drinks. And if there are
concerns that all this free nosh might pile on the pounds, there's
also a gym. Which is free.
In fact, AGI spends around $1m a year on freebies and perks for staff,
according to the Detroit Free Press. As a result, workers are more
productive, motivated and enjoy coming to work - while the company
saves buckets loads of dosh in recruitment and training.
The Philadelphia, PA, company, which provides geospatial analysis and
visualisation software to the aerospace and defence industries, topped
the list of the "Best Small Company to Work for in America"
award among the "Best Small Companies" category.

12/19/2004 03:41 PMThere’s a lot of energy in ethanol, which is non-toxic and can
be made cheaply from corn. Researchers from Saint Louis University,
who earlier this year developed a fuel cell using enzymes to generate
electricity from ethanol, have built a microchip-based version of the
device. The trick to constructing the biofuel cell was creating a
sheltered environment for the enzymes, which are fairly sensitive. The
researchers coated the carbon anode, or positive electrode, of
