Symantec Facing Problems With Product
Activation
10/30/2003 11:46 PMAt least Intuit realized what a waste of time and money it was to put
product activation technology into their software. Once they realized
the pointlessness of it, they issued a
very
public apology on the matter. Unfortunately, other companies
aren't quite so enlightened. Symantec is having
all sorts of trouble with their product
activation technology, that is preventing many legitimate users
from using the software they paid good money for. Symantec is now
saying that they're working on it, but can't figure out what the
problem is, and can't suggest a date when they'll offer a fix. Here's
a simple solution: follow Intuit's lead and ditch the activation
technology altogether. The simple fact is that the software is still
getting pirated. You see offers for it all the time - and it only
takes a hacker a little while to figure it out. So, the only people
this is really impacting are the
legitimate users of your
product - and you're making their lives worse. Most of these people
are going to go to a competitor, and will be quite vocal about why
they would never purchase anything else from Symantec. Thus, it does
nothing to solve the problem, angers your customers, and drives people
to competitors. How does this make sense?

Copy Protection software Starforce
causing gamers headaches
07/12/2004 10:47 PMImagine you go out buy a Game install it play it several months and
then remove it from your computer you would expect the game to clean
up after itself. Apparently Starforce copy protection is embedded in
some games and installs itself onto Gamers hard-drives and when the
games are removed the Starforce code remains. This has led to
performance issues and being these gaming companies assume every
consumer is a criminal. They have decided invading these peoples
computers is a good for business. If I wanted to copy a game I would
just go on the net and download the cracked version. Gaming companies
need to start treating their customers like customers instead of
criminals. [Techdirt]
I recommend you read the article on Broadband
Reports they have links to clean up tools.

Security Headaches? Take ASP.NET 2.0!
06/21/2004 11:23 PMNew security features are an important improvement in ASP.NET 2.0.
These features include membership services that manage a database of
user accounts, hashed passwords, a role manager for managing role
membership for users, and five new server-side controls that make
implementing forms authentication much easier. ASP.NET 2.0 also offers
a provider model that gives you complete control over the
implementation of the Membership and Role services and cookieless
forms authentication. You also get easy Web-based administration for
simple local and remote administration of user accounts and roles, as
well as enhanced control of other non-security related settings.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Headaches
Windows XP Service Pack 2 Headaches
07/19/2004 11:41 AMCompanies brace for Microsoft security update: An interesting
look at the apparently huge Windows XP Service Pack 2 due next month
and what it means for software companies. The changes will affect
thousands of programs that have depended on how Windows handles
certain things.
The new system bolsters security on Windows, its built-in Internet
Explorer browser and Outlook Express e-mail. Among the changes, a
Windows Firewall will automatically be turned on, helping to guard
against attack. The browser has been fortified, and a new attachment
manager will offer tougher policing against e-mail-borne attacks.
The changes in the way Windows polices itself — particularly
the newly strengthened firewall — could cause troubles for
applications that are used to working with Windows' old ways. Some say
that's particularly true of applications that regularly interact
online, such as gaming programs or music services.
