Rumor Control: Nokia N-Gage Not Being
Pulled From Stores

Rumor Control: Nokia N-Gage Not Being
Pulled From Stores
08/04/2004 09:57 AM

http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/images/ngage_qd1.jpg imageSo a rumor has been going around that Electronics Boutique had been instructed to pull the Nokia N-Gage QD, the updated version of the ill-fated original N-Gage. Shipping units back to the factory is never good; however, it's not nearly as bad as some are letting on (N-Gage being pulled completely from market entirely, etc.). According to our sources inside EB (the guy I called and asked), the first shipment of N-Gage QDs with T-Mobile service had a somewhat convoluted sign-up process on the phone -- convoluted enough that many people couldn't get their accounts activated. The first batch was shipped back, updated with easier sign-up software (like later models already had), and shipped back to the ElBos for sale.

So yeah, not the end of the world. I'm sort of disappointed, too. (Not that I hate the QD -- it's actually sort of nice -- but I lament any lost opportunity to pick on N-Gage.)

There is word afoot that SP-2 does something we wouldn’t like. Although Microsoft insists that it’s a security measure, SP-2 is said to limit the number of TCP/IP open connections. Not a serious issue, you think? Well, think again. How do you suppose all those programs that work to accelerate your downloads do their magic? Yep- they open multiple TCP/IP pipes to one or more Internet locations and download your files in what seems like…

Our friends over at TheJawa.com have uncovered a new rumor list of potential new Original Trilogy Collection toys we may (or may not) see in the future. Many of these items have been rumored for the Saga line in the past, and there's a good mix of new/rehashed toys. As always, nothing is official yet, although I can confirm at least one item on the list...and no, I'm telling which one.

O'Grady's PowerPage: Details are sketchy, but one can assume that the new iSight camera will have more features to better work with the H.264/AVC video technology coming in Mac OS 10.4.
In related news, Apple is also secretly working on successors to the PowerBook, iBook, Power Mac, and iMac. Some will have modest upgrades, while others will be more "exciting." Apple intends to release new versions some time in the future, on a date which we have yet to be confirm. :-)

Ever since Bob Cringley posted his November 27th article titled, "Apple's Tablet Computer Might Finally Be That Link Between Your PC and TV" the Mac web has been abuzz in renewed Mac tablet/PDA speculation. We've heard it all before. Pre-MacWorld Expo Tablet Hysteria is as predictable as Pre-Millennium Armageddon Panic and, historically, just as likely to be accurate.

What do you say? Will 2004 be "The Year of the Tablet"? Sound off in our web poll!

Rumor Mill: EvDO in NYC?

Rumor Mill: EvDO in NYC? 08/27/2004 01:30 PM
Rumors are flying that Verizon is in the midst of building out EvDO in New York City: NYC will serve as a crucial example of how the higher-speed mobile data networks compete next to Wi-Fi. Both networks have upsides in the city. Wi-Fi is higher speed, lower cost, and available in many places. EvDO will be lower speed, higher cost, but available in more places (although cellular coverage is notoriously bad in the city). At the end of the day, there's a niche for both networks and if the price is right, enough customers for both....

The Atari Landfill Rumor

The Atari Landfill Rumor 03/22/2005 04:31 PM

Five Million E.T. Pieces: I missed this link in my prior post about The Video Game Crash of 1983. It's a great look at what happened to Atari in the early 80's. It ends by confirming the rumor that millions of game cartridges ended up in a landfill somewhere.

[...] Atari, stuck with millions of games and consoles that were largely unsellable at any price, sent fourteen truckloads of merchandise from their plant in El Paso, Texas, to be dumped in a city landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico in late September 1983. In order to keep the site from being looted, steamrollers crushed and flattened the games, and a concrete slab was poured over the remains.

Why would someone "loot" old E.T. cartridges? I think Atari was just afraid of a picture of all those cartridges ending up in a newspaper somewhere.

Rumor Mill Keeps Turning 06/22/2005 02:12 AM

All eyes are going to be on Seattle this coming week as I received a phone call today from a listener who filled me in on some information that he had received. Expect some very HUGE announcements, to happen during Gnomedex from at least two companies.

I have the story already written minus some details if I can get a cross confirmation from another source I am debating on saying anything because that would spoil some of the fun. I would also hate to have a lawyer come after me for breaking this so it will have to wait for now.

Rumor Today: AppleWorks X

Rumor Today: AppleWorks X 08/05/2004 06:05 PM
The source of the rumor? A listing for an upcoming book entitled "Ap pleWorks X for Mac OS X: A Visual Quickstart Guide."
I hope what this means is that Apple, in addition to Keynote, has now a word processing and a spreadsheet application. And AppleWorks X is a suite consisting of all these applications, plus, perhaps with a version of FileMaker Pro.
And, hopefully, like the current AppleWorks/ClarisWorks, the entire suite is also available for Windows.
One can dream, can't I?

Michael Jackson has created his own, highly dignified Web site: I have set up this website to serve as a source of official communications on my case. Any statement that does not appear on this website must be considered unauthorized. The three links on the page lead to statements that say nothing more than that it's all lies. Maybe as the rumors get more specific, the rebuttals will become more worth reading. So far, though, the site is yet more evidence that the more authorized a site is, the less interesting it is, which you may take as a backhanded,...
