“infamous41md has reported some vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel, which potentially can be exploited by malicious, local users to cause a DoS (Denial of Service) or gain escalated privileges. Various functions in the IEEE 1394 driver contain integer overflows within the memory allocation scheme. This can potentially be exploited via specially crafted requests, which may cause a large amount of data to be copied into an insufficiently sized buffer.”

1.1
02/10/2004 02:46 AM
This release adds support for the 2.6 Linux kernel series. Other new features include support for exporting FUSE filesystems over NFS, read efficiency improvements, automatic lazy unmounting, the addition of the fsync call, plus minor bugfixes and cleanups. AVFS is a system, which enables all programs to look inside gzip, tar, zip, etc. files or view remote (ftp, http, dav, etc.) files, without recompiling the programs. With FUSE a userspace program can export a filesystem through the Linux kernel. This release is available for download at: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=21636&package_id =31956&release_id=214856

Filesystem data visualization using
JPGraph
03/14/2005 04:05 PM
JPGraph is a set of programs written in PHP that plots data into a wide range of graphs and formats the results. Licensed under the Trolltech QPL License, JPGraph is now at Version 1.17. Whatever your data, JPGraph can help you to view it graphically, letting you to see relations in more clearly. Such data visualization may not be important to a computer, but, to a person, it can make a lot of difference to analysis.

File folders: The carbon database
filesystem

File folders: The carbon database
filesystem
05/10/2004 07:21 AM
Walls of file cabinets can be found at any institution, containing thousands upon thousands of manually indexed documents. When someone's interested in using a folder within, they take it out, bring it to their desk, and work with it. Once done, it's put in a "to be filed" stack (or filed immediately). This is the most common way to structure a filesystem on today's computer as well: cabinets of folders of files, all carefully packed away on the wall of the office, waiting to be carefully taken out, worked with, and then carefully put back. The translation of a carbon-based filing system to a silicon-based filesystem leaves out one key component: most people don't have someone to file their "to be filed" stack. The clearest sign of this lack is a directory filled with thousands of files, distinguishable by filename;...

Turn Gmail storage into a mountable
filesystem

Turn Gmail storage into a mountable
filesystem
08/29/2004 10:41 AM
Cory Doctorow: What to do with all that extra, network-based storage that comes with your Gmail account? If you're using Linux, you can turn it into a mountable filesystem with GmailFS.
GmailFS provides a mountable Linux filesystem which uses your Gmail account as its storage medium. GmailFS is a Python application and uses the FUSE userland filesystem infrastructure to help provide the filesystem, and libgmail to communicate with Gmail.

GmailFS supports most file operations such as read, write, open, close, stat, symlink, link, unlink, truncate and rename. This means that you can use all your favourite unix command line tools to operate on files stored on Gmail (e.g. cp, ls, mv, rm, ln, grep etc. etc.).
