The new president of MIT

The new president of MIT 08/27/2004 01:40 PM

An Associated Press story about MIT's president, Susan Hockfield, devotes a lot of space to her sex and the sex ratio among MIT faculty members.  What is more interesting to me is Hockfield's background as a life scientist.  Her last research and teaching position was at Yale Medical School.  She is not an engineer.  She was never a computer programmer.  MIT's current president, Chuck Vest, was a mechanical engineer.  His predecessor, Paul Gray, was an electrical engineer.  His predecessor, Jerry Wiesner, was an electrical engineer.  (See http://libraries.mit.edu/archives/mithistory/histories-offic es/pres.html for more detail.)

Hockfield has a good opportunity to realign MIT with the national mood.  Harvard University, for example, nearly a century ago was host to the world's #1 department of civil engineering.  The president of Harvard at the time looked around and decided that civil engineering wasn't going to be important to the United States.  He shut down the department and fired all the faculty members, including those with tenure.  There are plenty of things that folks at MIT do that (a) attract reasonable research funding, (b) are among the best projects of their kind worldwide, and (c) are things that nobody cares about anymore or that are done just as well by Industry.

After she has cleared out some space on campus what new initiatives might she push?  How about a medical school?  MIT has one of the world's best biology departments but, except for some ties to Harvard Medical School, very little in the practical side of medicine.MIT could probably do better work in biology if there were medical colleagues close at hand with whom to collaborate.  MIT's engineering research would take on new relevance if it were tied to patient care.

Starting a medical school will be a huge challenge, of course.  Despite the growth in the U.S. population the American Medical Association has generally opposed new med schools due to the fact that more doctors might lead to lower average salaries.  But if there is to be a new medical school in the United States where better than at MIT, where a random door in the bio department might very well open into the office of a winner of the Nobel prize for "physiology or medicine"?

Resign Mr. President

Resign Mr. President 05/08/2004 05:21 PM

I know I'll get a lot of flack for this, but I am of the mind that Bush should resign as a sincere gesture of apology to the world and to Americans.  Ultimately, he is responsible for the humiliation, rape and murder that occurred in Iraq by American soldiers and no mere words will make up for the damage the acts have caused.

Admittedly, I don't like Bush and I don't think he is fit to be the President of United States, but that's beside the point...I think.  Resignation will take much courage and sacrifices, but I don't think I am asking for anything less than what this country is asking from its soldiers.  This will send a shocking message to the world that will put right much of the damages to our reputation and our soul.

Whether Bush really deserves to be forced to resign or not is irrelevant to me.  Whether his resignation serves this country better than not doing so does.  I have always wondered what 'Bucks Stop Here' meant if words of apologies is the best the President can offer.  I think now is time to show exactly what that means.

If you are a Bush supporter and this post offends you, my apologies.  I am just saying what I think is best for this country.

President of the Internet

President of the Internet 02/16/2004 12:57 AM

The President of the Internet | CEO Blues: Finally, a goal worthy of my time.

Recently there has been some debate as to who the President of the Internet is and how they came to power. The concerned parties mutually agreed that because Google is unbiased and somewhat democratic it would be used to determine the current President of the Internet. Whoever holds the top search result for “President of the Internet” will in fact be the President of the Internet.

Write the President Here

Write the President Here 05/11/2004 10:30 AM

Hi, this is President Bush. No seriously — the entry was written by George W. Bush. I'm posting to this blog because it seems like Deane's site is a great way for people to get in touch with the movers and shakers of the world.

Apparently a great number of you are sitting out there waiting for important people to post here so you can get in touch with us. Given this situation, I'm sitting here with Bill Gates, Bill Clinton, Jesus, and Scooby Doo right now. We're waiting for your comments.

So, please write to ask for money, to explain your theory on the war in Iraq, to chastize Willie for his indescretions, to ask for random miracles, or to say that "I would have gotten away with it too, if not for those meddling kids!!"

We're sitting here waiting.

President Kerry

President Kerry 07/30/2004 08:10 AM
The problem with visionary speeches in politics is the same as with sales speeches that talk about benefits: If the vision is big enough, it's always the same speech. In marketing, you end up saying "SAves time, drives down costs, boosts profits," which works out to the single, unified benefit: "Make more money." In American politics the speech becomes about family, flag and freedom. If the vision is sufficiently grand, the same speech can be given by George Bush, John Kerry, Ralph Nader and your crazy Uncle Bob. I liked Kerry's speech because it wasn't visionary. By giving us enough...
