introduction of radar, which was far more effective.

Although calling it "underwater SMS" might be a
little misleading, the underwater diving computers recently purchased
by the Australian Navy from Nautronix sound extremely useful -- and
use sound to communicate. The Windows-based PCs use both GPS and sonar
to track the position of the divers and underwater object, and can
beam messages from one machine to another via acoustically powered
network, not unlike a telephone modem. The manufacturer has a wide
array of products designed to facilitate communication wireless
underwater, where radio waves are often soaked up and diffused by the
water.

Snip from Brian Braiker's July 12 Newsweek article (Link):
In February the Marines signed a $1.1 million contract for the
devices; the I Marine Expeditionary Force took them to Fallujah and
the Navy's Fifth Fleet has them in the Persian Gulf. (McSweeney didn't
know if they'd been used.) Miami, Los Angeles, the Port Authority of
New York and New Jersey, and the Department of Homeland Security are
considering purchases. With protestors coming to New York and Boston
for the conventions, might we see the first domestic use this summer?
Gruenler hints: "All I can say is there are cities you would
recognize."
And, this from an August 30 AP story from Ellen Simon (

Earlier this month, the New York Police Department showed off a
machine called the Long Range Acoustic Device, developed for the
military and capable of blasting at an earsplitting 150 decibels -- as
loud as a firecracker, a jet engine taking off or artillery fire at
500 feet, according to the Noise Center at the League for the Hard of
Hearing. The NYPD said it would use the machine to direct crowds to
safety if there's a terrorist attack or remind protesters where
they're allowed to march. Police said they wouldn't use the
earsplitting screeching noise feature at the convention. "It's only to
communicate in large crowds," Inspector Thomas Graham of the police
department's crowd control unit said.

Have We Written Off Cold Fusion Too
Soon?
04/23/2004 01:32 PMFusion research is generally considered something of a pseudo-science
in some circles as almost every major announcement in the field is
later disproven or made highly questionable when the results weren't
reproducible. However, some researchers won't give up, and some are
saying that, while it may still be early, some of the
experiments are showing reproducible results, suggesting that
there may actually be something to the theories. After so many people
have been burned by cold fusion claims, it makes sense to remain
skeptical for now, but maybe the science isn't as pseudo as some
believed.
Ford Fusion Web Site
Ford Fusion Web Site
03/22/2005 04:31 PMFord mines consumers' wants: This is pretty brilliant. Ford
is using a Web site to let people outfit fantasy Fusions — a new
sedan coming next year. But they're not just throwing away the
data.
It's an attempt to more closely align consumer demand with actual
production, which often can be difficult.
The company is letting virtual shoppers build their own Fusions on
the Web, including pricing options and picking colors. At the end,
people are asked to fill out a survey giving their thoughts on what
else they'd like to see on the cars.
So if 60% of the people make fake Fusions in the color blue, guess
what color the majority of real Fusions will be?
Of Cold Fusion And Perfect DRM
Of Cold Fusion And Perfect DRM
04/19/2005 11:06 AMIt's funny how every year or so, some company comes out with a claim
that it has created the
absolute perfect copy
protection system that works perfectly every time, preventing
unauthorized copying, but allowing authorized playback. The latest
such claim comes along with amusing boasts such as its ability to
"wipe out" file sharing. Beyond the fact that most content companies
(despite their claims) don't want to wipe out file sharing, there
simply is no way to make a perfect copy protection system. If the
content needs to be seen, listened to or read, then there will be a
way to make a copy and get it on a file sharing system. It's that
simple. Of course, we're dealing with industries that seem to have no
problems whatsoever in exaggerating claims -- so perhaps it's normal.
Next thing you know, we'll find out that these firms are working on
cold fusion and perpetual motion machines.

06/30/2004 12:37 PM
The Vosonic X'S-Drive Pro VP 300 is 40GB external
hard drive that is clunky, cheap-looking, has a crappy text-only
integrated screen, plays MP3s, but not WMA, AAC, or OGG Vorbis, and
can only read from one card from its card reader at a time. So why
would any photographer want it? Because it's cheap, it does the
primary job it was designed to do (act as remote backup for memory
cards), and can accept as many additional 2.5-inch laptop hard drives
as you want to swap into it, meaning that all other things aside, you
can purchase this single $335 drive and continue to upgrade it for
only the price of additional hard drives.

09/14/2004 11:18 AM
Oops, I almost forgot about these new cameras
announced from JVC - the ones they've been hyping up to no end as
their big "mystery product." Basically, they're camcorders with hard
drives in them - a 4GB microdrive, to be exact. They look pretty cool
and everything, but they're really most interesting because they are
the first consumer camcorder with a built-in hard drive, not because
they do anything particularly unique. That being said, I fully support
this idea, and think most consumer recording technology should move to
hard drives as soon as possible (I'll be waiting until you can get
something with a bigger hard drive than 4GB for less than $1,500,
though).
Both models (the GZ-MC100 and the GZ-MC200) can record up to 9Mbps
in MPEG2, though, which is DVD quality.

Toshiba develops 100GB hard disk for notebooks: Yikes.
Toshiba Corp. has developed a hard disk drive for notebook
computers that can hold 100GB of data. The company expects to begin
selling it later this year, it said Thursday.
The new drive offers a quarter more storage space than the
company's current highest capacity notebook drive and is the first
2.5-inch drive from any manufacturer to store 100GB, according to
Toshiba.
