Jim Macdonald explains writing

Jim Macdonald explains writing 02/19/2004 12:06 AM
Jim Macdonald, half of the Doyle-Macdonald writing team, has been presiding over a hundreds-posts-long running tutorial on how to write that is unbelievably good and sensible and right. If you want to write, go read this now.
Well, now, what to put in the opening?

We're going to stick with the chess game metaphor for a while here. In the opening you're trying to put yourself into a strong position for going into the midgame (where the exciting action and the exciting combinations occur), and you do this mostly by getting your pieces off the back rank as quickly as possible. The pieces are your major characters. Get them out there, and get them doing things.

Don't neglect your pawns -- your minor characters. You should cherish your minor characters. They'll save your life. If you have a selection of minor characters you can pull them out to solve problems later in the book.

Now, what to put in that first chapter? (Recall that if your readers don't finish the first chapter they'll never get to chapter two.)

To answer the question of what goes into chapter one, I'm going to grab the first stanzas from a bunch of Anglo-Scots folk ballads. These were the popular songs of earlier times, cooked by the folk process so that only the important and memorable parts remain, they're entertaining, and they tell stories.

The Wireless Farm

The Wireless Farm 06/18/2004 11:13 AM

Wireless Technology Could Soon Help Farms: Interesting story about wireless penetration in the farming industry.

Farms of the not-too-distant future could be managed through wireless computer networks that allow farmers to sit in their pickups with a laptop and drive tractors, monitor soil moisture and even feed the hogs remotely. [...]

At least two Georgia farmers are already using the technology. One uses wireless video to monitor vegetable packing. Another relies on a wireless network to monitor irrigation systems.

Pockney can sit in his office and see the position of a 600-foot irrigation system in a nearby field on his computer screen. The system is equipped with a global positioning system to provide its location. A wireless video camera shows how it is operating.

AgBots: Robots On the Farm

AgBots: Robots On the Farm 07/06/2004 03:09 PM

robot_farmers.jpg image

In a cornfield in central Illinois, agricultural engineers are preparing robots to do the mundane farming jobs like weeding, looking out for harmful insects, and taking soil samples. Called "ag robots," the idea is to replace bulky farm equipment with swarms of precision helpers that can maintain an entire field autonomously. The one pictured, developed by University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign engineer Tony Grift [left] and visiting scholar Yoshi Nagasaka [right], uses lasers to traverse the corn rows, while other, cheaper designs use more haphazard approaches to randomly cover the same ground.

Life on the Robotic Farm

Life on the Robotic Farm 12/30/2004 04:41 PM
The Swirling Brain sent a link to a CNN.com article that talks about the benefits of automation on the modern farm. The farmer sits in the air conditioned cab of his self-driving, GPS-guided tractor, checking stock prices and surfing the web. The tractor knows where it's going, and can continue in the dark. It even knows precisely where it left off yesterday so it can start in the right place today. The system also keeps maps of the fields to make sure this years plantings don't go over old root systems.

Wind Farm - Growing 150-ton plants in

Wind Farm - Growing 150-ton plants in
the sky
03/20/2003 04:22 PM
Wind power had a record year in 2002, with 6.8 gigawatts of new power taking the combined worldwide total to 31 gigawatts. Only five years ago, 75% of that capacity was not even built yet, and the generating capacity of individual wind power turbines was a measly 150 kilowatts. Today's standard wind turbines pump out 2-3 megawatts each, and yet more powerful and efficient prototypes are already being tested. Wind power is advancing quickly, that's clear. At a recent alternative energy conference in the US, Christopher Flavin, President of Worldwatch, stated that "Wind Power is breaking into the mainstream," and that it will be "the lowest-cost electricity within the next few years." Today, so-called Wind Farms are "sprouting up" all over the world. Recent innovations have even made it possible to install the first wind power in Antarctica, where the average windspeed is more than 25 mph, and can gust to 150mph. These "fortified" windmills are smaller and shorter than the 2-3 megawatt models, however. A full-sized windmill stands more than 50 meters high, and that makes them quite difficult to construct. I visited a "growing" wind farm last year, one that was about half-way finished, and was given a tour of the site by the construction manager. What follows is a short pictorial account of my site-tour, and a description of the processes involved in changing a fallow, rocky coastline into a productive wind farm.
