buy this book

From the how-did-I-miss-this-book department is an utterly fabulous treat, ella minnow pea: A novel without letters. Considering all the linguists I know and how efficient Amazon is at pushing books in my direction, I am at a loss to explain how or why we all managed to escape reading this book and immediately buying a copy for everyone we know. I got lucky when the editor of the English edition of the local paper suggested I go and get a copy from Akateeminen.

The story is in a similar vein to Thurber's The Wonderful O as it is a lipogram told around the familiar pangram 'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog'. It is one of the most brilliantly clever books I've read in years as it combines cunning linguistics with political allegory in a epistolary novel. Language lovers must get this book. I need to go find a hardback copy so it can find a proper place next to my old, but dignified, copy of The Wonderful O. :)

I'm really disappointed in Google. This new Site Flavored Search that some folks are talking about is really kind of disappointing. Why? Simple. In order to add it on my site, I have to fill out a survey to help Google understand what sort of content my site contains. Well, that's not quite true. I'm just selecting from a list of categories that will be included as a hidden form field in the HTML used to submit the search request...

Costlier, Flavored Bananas

Costlier, Flavored Bananas 07/01/2004 01:49 PM
It seems that every time I pick up some sort of fruit juice these days it's one of these funky "mixes": banana-apple-kiwi or pineapple-cranberry-rambutan or whatever. I'm not exactly sure what the excitement is about mixing fruits, but apparently it's leaving the drink space and moving into the actual fruit. It's not completely out of the ordinary. For years, people have been mixing plums and apricots and turning them into pluots/plumcots/apriums. However, the Chiquita banana people aren't just trying to merge two different fruits. They want to keep the banana, but add other fruit flavors to it. They see it as a sort of "designer" banana -- akin to the Starbucks of fruit. In other words, just like the Tall Mocha Frappaspresso or whatever it is they call slightly modified coffee at Starbucks these days, you'll be able to buy (noticeably more expensive) Banalama or whatever they decide to call their multi-flavored banana.

Ohio liquor cops steal citizen

Ohio liquor cops steal citizen
identities, and it's legal?
04/13/2005 03:52 AM
Xeni Jardin: State liquor officials in Ohio hired a woman to pose undercover as a stripper -- and gave her someone else's driver's license for an assumed identity, based on a bizarre interpretation of state law.
Haley Dawson has never been a stripper. But Ohio liquor-control agents took her identity and gave it to a 22-year-old college student who they had recruited to work undercover as a nude dancer.

As part of an investigation that resulted in nothing more than misdemeanor charges, police paid University of Dayton criminal-justice student Michelle Szuhay $100 a night to take it all off in early 2003 — as liquor-control officers drank beer and watched in the audience for three months, court papers show.

Other officers watched her strip on the Internet, using an account created under the identity of a dead man. The officers did all this by using Dawson’s driver’s license and Social Security number to hide Szuhay’s identity while she worked at the targeted strip club, the now-closed Total Xposure in Troy. To Dawson’s father, David Dawson, "It certainly looks like identity theft."

Oddly flavored condoms in Shanghai

Oddly flavored condoms in Shanghai 03/24/2005 02:22 PM
Xeni Jardin: BB Reader Dan Washburn in Shanghai says:
While Bliss paid our bills recently during a trip to a typically unfriendly neighborhood KEDI market — many bills get paid at 24-hour shops here in Shanghai — I perused the condom display rack, always good for a laugh. Always, indeed. Flavored condoms. Ice Cream. Green Tea. And, my personal favorite, Ordinary.

I find the concept of flavored condoms humorous to begin with, but I’ve also never had to taste a condom. So I guess they serve their purpose. A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, right? (Or, in this case, it actually prevents it from going down.) Ice cream? OK, I guess I can undertand this one. But there are many flavors of ice cream out there. Let’s hope it’s not Mississippi Mud Pie or Moose Tracks or Brownie Batter or anything that ends in “nut crunch.” Something like Karamel Sutra seems appropriate. But, hell, it’s probably Green Tea Ice Cream.

Marijuana IPO in the offing

Marijuana IPO in the offing 12/06/2003 09:48 AM
An entrepreneur has responded to Canada's impending marijuana legalization by founding a company to package, sell, and pay taxes on medical pot, and now he hopes to take the firm public.
Eugene estimates the grass crop is worth anywhere from CN$4 billion to CN$7 billion and thinks a money-making opportunity exists as governments move to decriminalize the drug. He also said a U.S. Supreme Court decision in October lifting a federal ban on medical marijuana will open the doors to a larger international market.

Throwing all (remaining) caution to the wind, Audiotronic went ahead and named the Marijuana & Casino line the "Addiction Series", leaving little to the imagination. There's an LCD and a few other typical features, but why would you care? It smells like weed!

Marijuana
06/17/2005 04:32 PM
Since the passage of California's Proposition 215 in 1996, medical marijuana has become an increasingly important political issue in the United States. Today, 10 states have recognized medicinal Cannabis and enacted laws protecting patients. Unforunately, the recent Supreme Court decision in Gonzalez v. Raich is a major setback for the medical marijuana movement. What follows is a discussion of related issues, as well as a plea for your assistance at this critical time.
