WHEN the ACT's 17-member Legislative Assembly last week passed an obscurely-named Bill it fundamentally changed the landscape of government software purchasing in Australia. Joining a number of jurisdictions worldwide — including several Brazilian cities — Australia's capital passed Democrats-sponsored legislation designed to give open source software a leg up. With the Democrats warning the ACT is just the beginning, opponents of open source and Linux, such as Microsoft, are starting to sweat.

Option Expensing
07/20/2004 06:09 PM
As expected, the House today passed the bill saying FASB can't force companies to expense options, instead saying they should follow the plan suggest ed two years ago by Craig Barrett, that only top execs have their options expensed. The bill still has to make it through the Senate (and the President, of course), which may be difficult. This still seems like a lot of talk over nothing. It doesn't involve any cash movement, just the shifting around of numbers on a piece of paper -- and the most important part of those numbers is already known. Anyone who really needs to know this information already knows it. The only thing this might change is the perception of some people who haven't been paying attention concerning the profitability of a company.

Bill Passes The Senate

Orrin Hatch's Other Ridiculous Copyright
Bill Passes The Senate
06/26/2004 01:19 AM
It seems that Orrin Hatch is involved in just about every bizarre anti-consumer, pro-Hollywood piece of legislation these days. Just days after introducing his absolute ly ridiculous and dangerous INDUCE act, Hatch's PIRATE Act has passed the Senate without debate and via a voice vote, so there's no record of which of your Senators just agreed to take your tax money to fight Hollywood's battles. If you don't remember, the PIRATE Act would let the FBI work on civil cases against copyright infringers. In other words, cases that should be between two private parties, will now be handled by the federal government, using your tax money. There's simply no justification for this, other than some Senators wanting to pay back their entertainment industry backers by doing their legal work for them -- using your money.
