New phone from Philips aimed at the "youth" market that comes with special "BeDJ" software which lets you create custom music mixes on the phone which can be used as ringtones or swapped with friends (how long until someone releases the first album created entirely on a cellphone?). The Fisio 530 also has a 65,000 color display, a built-in FM radio, and comes with a digital camera attachment which can rotate 360 degrees. Read...

Cellphone tips

Cellphone tips 12/08/2003 11:39 AM

I have a cellphone with Cingular, and opted to get the extra line for 9.99 a month (a good deal). What I learned is this (also true with Verizon): if you get a phone or an extra line, the first year, you cannot cancel the contract. Well, you can, but it costs more to cancel than to keep it open. In this case, they charge 200$ to cancel the contract, versus $80 to keep it open 8 more months, after which cancelling is free.

By the way, if you're still with Verizon, consider Cingular. They seem distinctly less evil, for now.

Unlock your GSM Cellphone 05/27/2004 01:58 PM

I was recently overseas and had my GSM T-Mobile phone with me. I figured I would run out get a pre-paid sim card and have local cell service while in the country I was in. To my surprise I could not get the SIM card to work in the phone. I was a bit pissed. But to my surprise a friend of mine sent me a link to this article and now I have the unlock code to my cell phone and when I am overseas again I will get a local pre-paid SIM card and be in business. Cellphone or freedom?

Cellphone or freedom? 01/22/2004 02:12 AM
Buying prostitutes. Nicholas Kristof (of the NY Times; reg. req.) bought the freedom of two young Cambodian prostitutes in order to return them to their villages... but it wasn't as simple as you might think. It's easy to be cynical (yes, he's using it as grist for columns; yes, it's a drop in the bucket), but isn't it better than doing nothing? Anyway, it's a fascinatingly messy story. (He discusses why he picked these particular girls, and addresses some of the moral issues, her e—scroll down to January 20.)

Coke Via Cellphone

Coke Via Cellphone 08/19/2004 07:12 PM

coca_cola.jpg imageSo to encourage Japanese people to actually spend 120 yen (about $1.09) on a single can of soda, Coca-Cola today announced the "Cmode 2" vending machine, which allows customers with cellular phones to purchase drinks "cashlessly" one of three ways - two-dimensional barcodes, infrared, and the FeliCa contactless IC system. Though cashless "Cmode" vending machines have been in various places throughout Japan since April of 2002, these are the first vending machines to support contactless IC as a method of transfer.

With drink names like "Qoo," "SCORPION," and "Lovebody," who could resist?

Cellphone jammer 11/15/2003 01:14 PM
The SH066P Personal Cell Phone Jammer is disguised as a phone, has an effective radius of 10-15 yards, and comes in US and worldwide frequency-flavors. They're illegal to use in most places, but not illegal to possess, build or sell. I'm as bugged by mobile abuse as the next person, but using one of these strikes me as a mcuh greater breach of the social contract than talking too loud or subjecting your coachmates to the default Nokia ring. Used cellphone market taking off

Used cellphone market taking off 04/23/2004 01:34 AM
The NYT reports on the growing US market for refurbished, used cellphones.
Many customers for these retreads are more interested in price tags than multimedia messaging or games of Snake II. "They say, 'I just want to make a phone call,' " said Jay Ellison, executive vice president of U.S. Cellular (www.uscc.com), a wireless carrier based in Chicago, which operates in 26 states and maintains a small inventory of refurbished handsets in its stores.

But there is also the cellphone equivalent of the preowned BMW. ReCellular, a company based in Dexter, Mich., resells about four million handsets in bulk worldwide each year. Of the 1.5 million it resells domestically, mostly for use in prepaid wireless plans, "plenty are higher-end with cameras and bells and whistles," said Eric Forster, an executive for the company, which finds buyers for phones collected by charities, as well as retailers' overstocks and trade-ins.

dog_camera.jpg image Keeping with the tradition of bizarre pet-oriented gadgets originating in Japan, Tomy has announced the "Wonderful Shot," a digital camera that is strapped around your dog's neck. The 0.3MP camera can not only be activated by remote controller, timer options provide delays of up to 60 minutes. I could personally think of some pretty perverted applications for a device like this, but I'll just keep those to myself. I'm sure Joel can fill you in if he wants to. However, I await a waterproof model; I wouldn't want Fido to ruin a digital camera by jumping in a pool.

Mobile Phone Jammer Scammer Getting Back
In Business
09/21/2004 12:29 PM
About a year ago, we wrote about a guy who was selli ng mobile phone jammers to hotels in Scotland -- where such devices weren't exactly legal. The guy had fine print on his website saying that the devices may not be legal, but failed to indicate that most of his customers were pretty obviously breaking the law. Well, now he's back. He's getting ready to launch a new website selling the devices again, but insists that this time he'll only sell them into countries where they're legal such as France. However, he still insists he's completely innocent of any criminal behavior, noting that selling the devices is perfectly legal. It's just using them that's illegal.

Remote Control Jammer 06/10/2004 07:55 AM

remote_jammer.jpg imageIt's dirty, tactically, but if you live in a household where control of the remote has escalated into a full-blown peacekeeping operation, this Remote Control Jammer from GirlsStuff UK is cheap enough (at around $8) to buy multiple units to sprinkle like land mines around the smoking battlefield of your living room or den. (Also useful: actual land mines.) It works on regular IR frequencies used by most common remotes, although they don't make any promises it will work in the US. (Thanks, Graeme!)

NokiaphonesAsia.jpg imageBlueserker passes on information from an article in Singapore's Asia One about three students from Temasek Polytechnic who have figured out a way to disable the camera function of select Nokia phones via Bluetooth. While the concept itself is interesting - enter a 'no camera' zone, and your phone disables itself automagically - the fact that Nokia's Bluetooth implementation allows a remote user to disable functions is probably the more immediate issue here. The affected phones are the 6600 and the 7210 - an attempt to shut down a 7650 failed.

You won't be making phone calls with our star's light alone, but on a sunny day the Sunpower batteries can manage to add about 15 minutes of talk time to your battery for every hour they spend charging. Depending on how actively you use your phone (and what part of Arizona you live in), your phone might not have to hit the charger at all. Prices run from about $40 to $60 per battery via their website.
