PKS 0.9.6 released 02/07/2003 09:40 AM
PKS is an OpenPGP Public Key Server. It allows users to store and lookup public keys from the server's database. It can also synchronize with other servers. This release is intended to be a solid, stable bugfix and feature upgrade to 0.9.5. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I'd like to announce that PKS 0.9.6 has been released! The file can be downloaded from the SourceForge Download Area for the "pks" project. (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=61738) 19427b543972c23fbc1c167d5408d3a9 *pks-0.9.6.tar.gz I just uploaded the tarball to SourceForge, so don't be surprised if it isn't available on SF mirrors yet. See the release notes (NEWS file) and ChangeLog for more information on the changes since 0.9.5. BE SURE TO READ THE UPGRADING FILE! IMPORTANT NOTES FOR INSTALLATION: * READ THE UPGRADING FILE! The database format has changed slightly, and backwards compatibility is NOT the default. * If you want to be able to add keys via HTTP, make sure to uncomment this line in your pksd.conf: www_readonly 0 * If you want to be able to download keys, make sure to uncomment max_reply_keys. Also, you'll probably want to change this from -1 (unlimited) to a more sane value. * BSD (FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD): PKS should work on these platforms. However, no current ports of PKS exist. (FreeBSD's and NetBSD's ports of pks-0.9.4 should NOT be used for security reasons.) * Debian Linux users: The Debian package should catch up to pks-0.9.6 very shortly. * RedHat Linux users: Running "rpm -ta pks-0.9.6.tar.gz" should build you the required RPMs. This release is intended to be a solid, stable bugfix and feature upgrade to 0.9.5. Bug reports and patches are always welcome. Cellphone jammer

Cellphone jammer 11/15/2003 01:14 PM
The SH066P Personal Cell Phone Jammer is disguised as a phone, has an effective radius of 10-15 yards, and comes in US and worldwide frequency-flavors. They're illegal to use in most places, but not illegal to possess, build or sell. I'm as bugged by mobile abuse as the next person, but using one of these strikes me as a mcuh greater breach of the social contract than talking too loud or subjecting your coachmates to the default Nokia ring. Remote Control Jammer 06/10/2004 07:55 AM

remote_jammer.jpg imageIt's dirty, tactically, but if you live in a household where control of the remote has escalated into a full-blown peacekeeping operation, this Remote Control Jammer from GirlsStuff UK is cheap enough (at around $8) to buy multiple units to sprinkle like land mines around the smoking battlefield of your living room or den. (Also useful: actual land mines.) It works on regular IR frequencies used by most common remotes, although they don't make any promises it will work in the US. (Thanks, Graeme!)

NokiaphonesAsia.jpg imageBlueserker passes on information from an article in Singapore's Asia One about three students from Temasek Polytechnic who have figured out a way to disable the camera function of select Nokia phones via Bluetooth. While the concept itself is interesting - enter a 'no camera' zone, and your phone disables itself automagically - the fact that Nokia's Bluetooth implementation allows a remote user to disable functions is probably the more immediate issue here. The affected phones are the 6600 and the 7210 - an attempt to shut down a 7650 failed.

Mobile Phone Jammer Scammer Getting Back
In Business
09/21/2004 12:29 PM
About a year ago, we wrote about a guy who was selli ng mobile phone jammers to hotels in Scotland -- where such devices weren't exactly legal. The guy had fine print on his website saying that the devices may not be legal, but failed to indicate that most of his customers were pretty obviously breaking the law. Well, now he's back. He's getting ready to launch a new website selling the devices again, but insists that this time he'll only sell them into countries where they're legal such as France. However, he still insists he's completely innocent of any criminal behavior, noting that selling the devices is perfectly legal. It's just using them that's illegal.

A Spinach-Powered Laptop?

A Spinach-Powered Laptop? 06/29/2004 04:05 AM
Roland Piquepaille writes "In "Could laptops run on spinach?," Nature reports that researchers from the MIT have made solar cells powered by spinach proteins. These prototype solar cells which transform light into 'green' energy could be used one day to coat and power your laptop. There is still work to be done before becoming a commercial product. Right now, the prototype delivers current for only three weeks. And they are not very efficient, converting only 12% of the light they absorb into electricity. However, these spinach-powered solar cells are better for our environment than silicon solar cells. And according to Science News Online, in "Protein Power: Solar cell produces electricity from spinach and bacterial proteins," they also have the potential to be self-repairing. You'll find more excerpts on my blog." Anyone else think this sounds ridiculously over-simplified? Thinking about how much energy would be needed to run a laptop would suggest that spinach farming would have to become mighty popular, and you may need to coat your house in spinach if you wanted to actually use it to power a computer.

Juicebox: Powered Backback

Juicebox: Powered Backback 07/12/2004 12:38 PM

juicebox.jpg imageSo this is a little old, but too geeky to pass up. Some beautiful dork named Michiel has rigged all his AC adapters and wall-warts into a single backpack, allowing him to recharge all his gadgets -- and there are a lot; couple PDAs, phone, GPS, iPod, laptop -- by plugging in the single protruding cord. Sure, anybody could do it with a power strip and some electrical tape, but Michiel's done a pretty nice job of it -- the glowing, integrated USB hub is a nice touch.

Perhaps version 2 will have a solar option, as well. Perhaps I'll stop saying "Perhaps," like an ass.
