Great Lifebl0g write up

Great Lifebl0g write up 04/08/2005 05:08 AM

Giles Turnball has a great indepth report of Nokia's Lifeblog - which I am a tester for.

It highlights Lifeblog's daddy - Christian Lindholm - who I met at ETech - hanging with Russel Beattie.

Though I woudl do it differently Lifeblog is a new kind of tool, partially inspired (I'm sure) by Joi Ito's life - as he's teh one who's fingerprints are all over this deal.

Lifeblog currently only works with TypePad and MT.

But it's cool - despite that.

protesting silliness 04/12/2004 08:52 PM
Were protests always like this? Living in the bay area for a few years now, I've avoided taking to the streets to protest wars and such. Not because I'm pro-war or anything, I'm just a little wary of what these events are really all about.

The GOP knew it would have to deal with a larger-than-usual contingent of angry activists protesting outside the Republican National Convention this year, but now it has to contend with the online ire of the Black Hat Hackers Bloc, too. Wired reports that while hundreds of thousands of protesters flood the streets of New York later this month, a cadre of left-leaning hackers will flood over the information superhighway to GOP.com and GeorgeWBush.com to jam their servers.

To write: perchance to try again: ay,
there's the rub or Do I Write Another
Book?
01/15/2003 08:47 AM
To write: perchance to try again: ay, there's the rub1 or Do I Write Another (PHP2) Book? Anyone who was IMing me in the May / June / July time frame may be surprised to see this entry. Things change and time makes pain and bad memories drift away. I am speaking, of course, about the O'Reilly Essential Blogging writing process which was just plain awful and made me swear that I would N_E_V_E_R write another book for money. And here I am. I've been approached by Sams to write a PHP 5 in 21 Days book and I'm torn. I just don't know whether I want to walk this road again. Here's the situation as I see it: Pros I am the PHP Journal columnist for "On the Horizon" which talks about new PHP 4.x and 5.x features so it makes sense to write this I'm virtually certain that I'd enjoy working with this editor more than my last. Shelley strikes me as just plain cool (she handled giving out books to a pack of ravenous open source folk at PHP CON with a lot of style and grace). Good self promotion Would probably generate consulting work although that is by no means clear Establishes my credentials more firmly and anchors me to PHP even more Chance to talk about things like templating and event driven coding $$$ (although there is never all that much of it) Having an editor Cons Having an editor Have to create a __good__ website for the book How will they bungle the online side of it in a new and creative way? Lose the source code? Post it wrong? Managing the book writing and blogging and consulting process concurrently Will I actually make money Does promoting parts of it on my blog make me a schill Questions If anyone out there can help with these questions, I'd appreciate it: Anyone out there buy Sams books? I haven't in years and I don't know the rep these books have. Thoughts? Example of Similar Sams Book Has anyone written for Sams? Do they pay well What are they like as a publisher? Positive, Negative, Details? Was it a good or bad omen when I dropped my review copy of "Cold Fusion in 21 days" in the sink when shaving this morning? Would you buy it? Do people buy PHP books as opposed to using PHP.Net? I myself have a bunch of PHP books but don't turn to them all that often. There is something just plain addictive about walking into a bookstore and seeing yourself on the shelf. That and once you've written one book then there is just something about it. As Robert Heinlein once remarked (and the quote is inexact) "No one likes writing but people like having written". He was definitely correct about that. Thoughts, feedback, comments strongly appreciated. 1To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub; Hamlet, Act 3, Scene 1. [_Go_] (sorry for the bad link but their search engine doesn't give easily linkable results) 2Oh and if you're wondering why I put PHP on the title, with PHP being the target audience I figured it would get this more attention (and syndication to other sites) from the target audience

Your great-great-grandmother didn’t

The Underground History of American Education
You aren’t compelled to loan your car to anyone who wants it, but you are compelled to surrender your school-age child to strangers who process children for a livelihood.... If I demanded you give up your television to an anonymous, itinerant repairman who needed work you’d think I was crazy; if I came with a policeman who forced you to pay that repairman even after he broke your set, you would be outraged. Why are you so docile when you give up your child to a government agent called a schoolteacher?

Clueless in Berkeley

Clueless in Berkeley 07/12/2004 04:07 PM
I have written before of my love for my favorite feature in the Berkeley Daily Planet, the Police Blotter. Today while reading it, I ran across this absolute gem which caused me to lose a mouthful of hot Peet's coffee in front of the Cheeseboard. Knife-Wielder Earns Cellular Domicile A 48-year-old Berkeley man found himself with a new and tightly confined residence after police busted him for flashing a knife at a fellow citizen near the corner of Center Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way at 9:37 a.m. Friday. The felon seems to have overlooked that building on the corner and all those blue-clad badge-wearing folks who pass through its portals en route to their black-and-white cars. (For those of you unfamiliar with Berkeley geography, our new police headquarters is at the corner of MLK and Center.) How do you get a job writing stuff like this? I want one. It made my day....

Rise of the Clueless

Rise of the Clueless 07/19/2004 09:54 AM
In Wired's July issue, Contributing writer Cory Doctorow writes about the movie I, Robot, in a slam at the late Dr. Isaac Asimov titled Rise of the Machines. I would rather Wired had found someone who had actually read more than two or three Asimov short stories. There is a lot in this article that is debatable but presented as concrete fact, and other "facts" which are downright false.

Clueless bank

I have an account at Imperial Capital Bank (yes, I know – there are countless jokes to be made of that name). I have it mostly because their interest rate on their checking account is quite good (1.92%, for now ...). Actually, that's the only reason I have an account there. Anyway, I have a check for some GBP laying around, so I called them to find out what they'd charge and which exchange rate they'd use and so...
