the software industry
'Creative destruction' and the future of
the software industry
07/23/2004 04:48 AMThe way that software is being produced and acquired is changing
rapidly. The availability of high quality software, often for no
licensing costs and with very user-friendly license terms, is
challenging commercial companies producing products in the same
software category. This new type of software is called either Free
Software or Open Source Software (it will be referred to in this
document as Free/Open Source Software) and is being attacked by the
incumbent software product vendors as if it were a threat to the free
market itself. The software industry is actually going through a
well-known free market process that was first identified by the famed
economist Joseph A. Schumpeter in 1942. It is called the process of
creative destruction.

These "Pervsaive Ambience" tile concept by Caleb
Fung would an extremely elegant way to add unobtrusive function to
rooms. Each tile can serve as a link in a network, providing power and
information to various "node" tiles, including "lighting tiles, heated
tiles, flat speaker tiles, and LCD tiles." It would be wonderful if
someone would make these; it would be more wondeful if someone made
these an open standard.

OECD Observer
07/15/2004 05:21 AMOECD Observerhttp://www.oecdobserver.org/The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development
(OECD) publishes hundreds of technical reports, working papers, and
development updates every year, and as a result it can be hard to stay
on top of all the research the group is disseminating to the public.
One way to stay on top of all of this material is by taking a close
look at the OECD Observer, which is meant to complement the print
version of the same name. Here visitors can browse such sections as
economy, society, development, and government to find out the latest
work being done at the OECD. Some of the more recent topics that have
been addressed within the Observer's pages include the so-called
knowledge economy, sustainable business practices, taxation, and
governmental corruption. At the site, visitors may also sign up to
receive email updates from the Observer. This will be added to
