Open source, flocking UAVs for hobbyists 01/09/2004 09:56 PM
Autopilot is an open-source firmmare for autonomous model aircraft:
We're building a system for autonomous aerial vehicles for the hobbiest. The entire design and all software is available as Free Software, licensed under the GPL. The goal is to produce a do-it-yourself autopilot kit that anyone can build and fly.

Our initial target is 60 sized model helicopters and less than $500 in parts. So far we've been very successful -- one of our 2.2 boards has hovered a Concept 60 for several minutes at a time under attitude command from the safety pilot. It isn't totally autonomous yet, but the demonstration has proven that the inertial measurement unit (IMU) and Kalman filter approach work well.

Scoble blown away by regular camera
phone that scans barcodes
07/01/2004 03:53 PM

I am amazed daily on how far behind America is in cell phone technology. My sister-in-law in Japan showed me a couple of years ago how she could find information about products just by taking a picture of it although I am not sure if she scanned a barcode or not. It Seems Neomedia Technologies has finally figured out that by enabling camera phone users to scan barcodes and linking that to a net based database with product information and price comparisons could make for a popular product.

I am all for this kind of empowerment but it just pisses me off that America the land of the free is so damn far behind when it comes to personal communications. [Scobleiz er]

Librarians, Computer Hobbyists Show The
Harm The Broadcast Flag Will Cause

Librarians, Computer Hobbyists Show The
Harm The Broadcast Flag Will Cause
03/30/2005 11:09 PM
While judges seemed sympat hetic to the legal questions raised concerning the FCC's right to mandate a "broadcast flag," the one big stumbling block was that the judges were not convinced that the groups who were suing (librarians, academics, computer hobbyists) had any standing in the case. That is, it was not clear that there was direct harm as a result of the flag. These groups went back to the drawing table and worked up a brief outlining the potential harm the broadcast flag would do. If the judges find the brief compelling, then they may tell the FCC it has no right to impose a broadcast flag on technologies. This would be a big win in allowing firms to innov ate without first having to ask for permission from the entertainment industry.
