Opinion: 2004 Was the Year Everything
Changed for Microsoft
12/29/2004 01:12 AM
Remember that software colossus called Microsoft? It was known as the 800-pound gorilla of the PC industry, a recalcitrant monopolist that could send competitors careening out of business simply by announcing that it was entering a particular market. Well, that Microsoft is dead. And its death has little to do with the company changing its ways to become a better corporate citizen and partner. Instead, Microsoft has grown lazy, complacent, and fat--arguably another IBM, a company Microsoft never intended to emulate. And rather than exit markets when Microsoft jumps in, the company's competitors are now watching Microsoft to see where it's heading, then jumping in with both feet. More often than not, Microsoft's tiny competitors get to market first and reap the rewards.

Jay on whether 9/11 changed journalism

Jay on whether 9/11 changed journalism 08/14/2004 08:22 AM
Jay has blogged an atypical piece that is typically brilliant. He asks: Did 9/11 change journalism? Should it have? What story do journalists tell themselves about their role in the "war on terrorism"? Are journalists who inform citizens of the most powerful and influentual nation in the world participants in the war on terror, in the worldwide struggle for democracy, freedom and markets, because their country is a participant—the biggest by far—and they inform it? Don't miss the discussion in the comments. I only have a simple-minded answer to the question Jay poses in his nuanced post: 9/11 should have...

Spam Hasn't Changed One Bit For New Law

Spam Hasn't Changed One Bit For New Law 01/06/2004 05:46 AM
I mentioned yesterday that I hadn't seen the slightest change in the amount of spam I received since January 1, when the new "CAN SPAM" law went into effect. It appears I'm not the only one. The various spam stoppers all claim that they haven't seen one bit of difference in the spam they're blocking. It certainly hasn't gone down, and they certainly aren't providing real information on how to opt-out. The only thing I've noticed (and this could be a coincidence) is that fewer spam messages have been getting through my filter the last few days. Otherwise, the CAN SPAM law appears to have done absolutely nothing to change the way spammers operate.

How Copyright Law Changed Music

How Copyright Law Changed Music 06/02/2004 11:07 PM
Chuck D of Public Enemy has always been a strong supporter of freeing up music. Years ago, when Napster first appeared on the scene, he was one of the first to publicly stand up in support of Napster, and even went on TV to debate Lars Ulrich from Metallica on the subject. Here's a fascinating i nterview with Chuck D & Hank Shocklee of Public Enemy, talking about how copyright law forced them to change the style of music they created entirely. They claim that two of their earlier albums would be impossible to create today, but were possible early on when record execs hadn't trained their legal guns on music sampling yet. Now, those same songs, that used many different samples would be impossibly expensive. Chuck D claims that the group had to "change our whole style" between albums in order to take into account new copyright rules. Also, when asked about others taking their music and remixing it themselves, he says: "I think my feelings are obvious. I think it's great."

Student Who Changed Grades Caught

Student Who Changed Grades Caught 05/11/2004 03:16 PM
A student who hacked into school computers to change his own grades has been caught. The student has been suspended and they're debating whether or not to file charges against him. This seems like such a cliche hack. The student also apparently tried to delete over a thousand files on the computer system as school officials were monitoring them and trying to track down the hacker. So, this week we have stories about the stere otypical teenager Sasser hacker and a kid who changed grades in the school computer. What other stereotypical hack is missing to completely drive home the nerdy teenaged hacker stereotype?

Walkmen changed our social norms 07/18/2004 08:45 AM
This article on the 25th anniversary of the Walkman explores some of the fascinating social fallout from the rise of personal stereos.
"The Walkman was critical in altering the rules of being with other people," Schiffer says. "People thought it was rude to listen to music in public. Now our standards have eroded to the route we've gone down with cell phones, which is to sanction rudeness. We are losing sociability."
