Since I've been using the Powerbook (which I still need to replace with a newer one now that the "speed bump" is official), I've drastically changed my e-mail habits (personal mail, not work mail). In doing so, I wonder if I'm unusual in this respect. Previously, I was using mutt for e-mail on my IBM Thinkpad running Linux. If you've not tried it, mutt is really the king of all console-based mail programs. It excels at making it very easy...

DOWN FOR THE COUNT

DOWN FOR THE COUNT 07/27/2004 09:50 PM
D OWN FOR THE COUNT At around 8:50, Soubirous’s campaign manager, Brian Floyd, received a call from an election observer in Temecula informing him that the vote count had been stopped – apparently by Registrar Mischelle Townsend herself. The reason was not made clear. So Floyd and another Soubirous campaigner named Art Cassel jumped into a car and drove to Townsend’s office to investigate. Sure enough, the counting area appeared to be near-deserted. But then they noticed two men huddled at one of the vote tabulation computers.

Should every vote count? 04/26/2004 08:31 PM
Canada considers electoral reform. The Law Commission of Canada just released a report that recomended a Mixed Member Proportional system much like that one that New Zealand recently adopted. Along with the steps being taken at the federal level, the provinces are at various stages in the process. The government in Quebec has proposed a similar MMP system for the province, a commission in PEI recomended the same system, BC has convened a Citizens Assembly, Ontario now has a Democrati c Renewal Secretariat, and Saskatchewan and New Brunswick are considering changes as well. Word Count

Word Count 08/27/2004 01:30 PM
Word Count
http://www.wordcount.org/

Words are used as invectives, toasts, and tirades, among other forms of human expression. As a type of artistic experiment, Jonathan Harris of Flaming Toast Productions decided to create this engaging website that documents the 86,000 most frequently used English words, ranked in order of commonality. Nay-sayers beware: This is no simple listing of the words, contained within a mundane series of connected web pages. As visitors quickly realize, this articulated end-to-end listing of these 86,000 words features scaled versions of each word, giving a "visual barometer of relevance." As the site notes, "The goal is for the user to feel embedded in the language, sifting through words like an archaeologist through sand, awaiting the unexpected find." Interestingly enough, the word "God" is one word from "began" (which is at number 375), and six words from "war." Budding urbanologists will find it interesting that the word "Chicago" is at number 6,692 and that "Shanghai" makes into the list at 18,242. Microsoft is not down for the count

Microsoft is not down for the count 12/24/2004 01:15 PM
No court ordered anything has ever really made any real difference with Microsoft. Of course they abide by court rulings, after all, they do play by the rules set out for them - after a huge court battle anyway. Well, those that feel that MS is down for the count had better think again. Just because they have been ordered to remove the Windows Media Player from their Windows operating system, does not mean that…

The story broke at 2:30 am in Washington: handover moved up, sovereignty passed to Iraqis. Surely big news for the networks. But the seconds or minutes that elapsed before the news could be broadcast... do they matter at all? Dan Rather says yes. I say: what clock is this man on? The political moment mattered-- a great deal. The seconds hardly at all.

Wal-Mart Can't Count, Part Two

Wal-Mart Can't Count, Part Two 04/01/2005 11:47 AM
Here's the ad now appearing in the current Wal-Mart flyer for the Revenge of the Sith toys debuting tonight. Well, one of them anyway... You may recall this story from March 15th, which shows action figures priced at $5.88. However, as you can see from the scan above, this ad has the action figures priced at $5.24. BOTH ads have arrived in mailboxes earlier this week! On a related note, Toys "R" Us stores will price match the Wal-Mart ads, so whichever price is on your flyer, be sure to bring it with you tonight! THIS JUST IN! We've gotten in a few reports that Toys "R" Us will price their figures down to $5.29 until April 9th.

Iraq Body Count is a web "button" that can be cut and pasted to a website showing an updated tally of civilian casualties in the upcoming Iraqi war. Another Online Grocer Down For The Count

Another Online Grocer Down For The Count 12/26/2003 02:55 PM
Lots and lots of companies have tried and failed at the online grocery game. Even before the biggest and most famous failure, Webvan, came on the scene, many people thought that the space was dead from folks like Peapod who had tried and failed to make a go of it. In the last year there had been some talk about how brick-and-mortar grocery stores like Safeway and Albertson's were making progress with integrated online offerings, but apparently even that model isn't working for everyone. Popular upscale grocer Whole Foods has shut down its own online operations, though, they don't give much of a reason why.
