Camino and AutoFill

Camino and AutoFill

Camino and AutoFill 06/25/2004 01:58 PM

Many of you are enjoying the recently released Camino v0.8, but are unhappy with its current lack of AutoFill capabilities. As a small suggestion, I recommend using this small bookmarklet, available over at efritz.net. Just set it up and add it to your Bookmarks Bar. The next time you see a form, just click on the bookmarklet and watch the form magically fill in with all of your information.

The name is going through legal checks, and Camino will debut sometime soon as Chimera 0.7. Speaking of Camino...If you are thinking about grabbing the 20030310 build of Camino, don't. It's crash-a-rific and I'm almost positive it has to do with the flash plug-in. I've already sent in 5 talkback reports today. Just stick with .7 for now. I only mention this because the nightly builds from .6 to .7 were almost always as stable as the point release and the dev guys even advocated grabbing a nightly build in the time between .6 and .7 to fix (among other things) a flash issue. Yes, I'm fully aware that nightly builds are meant for testing purposes only, they might shred your data, people can and do lose money! I'm just sayin'...

No I Didn't Forget About the Bookmarklets ...

Feedster!  Now available as a bookmarklet!  Get it here.  I tested this on both PCs and an OS X iBook.  The PC stuff worked but the OS X stuff did not.  I have no clue why.  And before Mozilla Andy jumps all over me, I did them for Mozilla too.

That's about it for the day.  Database is much larger, the pool of RSS urls is larger.  New hardware soon.  Good stuff overall.

Miscellaneous and Random Stuff

Oh and here's the rant of the day: Stupid, Stupid VB.  Even better than the bile I spewed this morning about ASPx stuff.  This one covers the myriad of human factors issues in Visual Basic.  I'm an ex-VB guy and I can attest to every single one of these.  I'd also add one more -- why is the dialog box for selecting COM objects to insert onto a form tiny?  I mean I have hundreds of the damn little things and I look thru them in groups of maybe 15.  Hello?  Microsoft Product Managers?  Anyone Listening?

Inbox Buddy

I've gotten some questions about my Inbox Buddy anti-spam product and does Feedster mean that we're now not doing that?  Nope.  We have the resources and committment to do both.  In fact, we'll be pushing the 1.1 version of Inbox Buddy out the door next week with some improved anti-spam features and performance enhancements.  If you use Outlook then you really might want to check out Inbox Buddy.  The people that have it pretty much love it to pieces.

Note: I'm one of the people who wrote Inbox Buddy so keep that in mind.  That, however, doesn't mean that its not a good product.

You need to escape the target URL, which isn't easy to do while copying and pasting it, but is easy for a bookmarklet to do. So, drag this link -- Feedster Citations -- to your toolbar, and you can have one-click access to the conversations around any blog post you're currently viewing. ...

1milFPS.jpgShimadzu's HyperVision HPV-1 camera can shoot one million frames per second, although with a limited clarity of 312 by 260 pixels in monochrome. Still, imagine the excitement of a three hour movie detailing the intricacies of drying paint. Unfortunately, as fast as it is, it can only shoot 100 frames at a time—oh, and it costs $200,000. Still, it won't be long before we'll be able to watch paint dry in color.

Web Development Bookmarklets: Thanks for Si mon Willison for pointing us at this amazing page of bookmarklets that let you play with the CSS and JavaScript of any page.

These bookmarklets let you see how a web page is coded without digging through the source, debug problems in web pages quickly, and experiment with CSS or JS without editing the actual page.

Some killer bookmarklets:

  • Computed styles. As near as I can tell, this one lets you click on an element and displays the styles applied to it both directly and inherited from higher up the cascade.

  • Generate source. Displays the entire DOM tree as formatted text.

  • View variables. Displays all JavaScript variables and functions in scope on the page.

  • Shell. Gives you a JavaScript shell in the current page scope.

Great, great tools here. Incidentally, these are only the "Web Development" bookmarklets. There are hundreds of bookmarklets on the site. Some of them are jaw-droppingly good, and worthy of their own post.

If you don't know how a bookmarklet works, just pick one you like, then drag it to the bookmark bar on your browser. Find a page where you want to use it, and click the bookmark.
