Can You Violate A Patent With 16
Characters On An M&M?
12/22/2004 01:16 AMIt's that holiday time and the makers of M&M candies have decided to
let you print your own message on an M&M -- limited to 8 characters
each on two lines (which seems pretty tight for the size of an M&M
anyway). It's not surprising that there's a ton of legalese added
about what you can and cannot print in your 16 characters, but as
LawMeme points out, how exactly
would someone go about violating a patent in those
16 characters?

09/18/2004 01:05 PMWith the DVD boxed set but days away, magazine collectors should be
checking the old bookstore racks with an eagle eye. Continuing its
fine tradition,
Entertainment Weekly has put out another great
Star Wars cover. There is little doubt that the creators of
this magazine are absolutely enamored with the Saga, as is apparent
with their liberal use of
Star Wars images whenever they can
get away with it. If you are interested in collecting the
EW
covers though, do take note that this is a weekly publication, and
will only be on the shelves for a few more days.

right before your child's own eyes, giving them their first experience
with the empty promises that their doomed life holds. No glasses are
necessary and the black box contains an optical system and patented
software to project the images in front of you. Similar technology
could easily be adapted for use in museums and anywhere else that
floating, animated images are welcome. The company's site isn't coming

New fiction novel features characters
who plot to kill the prez
07/03/2004 04:42 PMA new, 115-page fiction book from otherwise easygoing author Nicholson
Baker features a pair of protagonists who discuss ways to assasinate
George W. Bush.
To threaten to kill the president in real life is illegal. To explore
such a topic in fiction is presumably protected by the First
Amendment.
They don't actually do the deed, or even attempt it, but the book is -
according to early snippets - replete with deep-seated anger and
elegantly nasty epithets hurled at both the President and his cabinet.
Mr Baker's publisher, Alfred Knopf, plans to release the book on 24
August, on the eve of the Republican National Convention in New York.
To call it a provocation would be an understatement. The author and
publishers have no intention of giving anybody ideas - to do so would
be a criminal offence - but they are certainly playing very close to
the edge in a United States that, in the wake of the 11 September
attacks, has shown no compunction about locking people up and asking
questions later.
There was no immediate official reaction yesterday after extracts from
Checkpoint were published in The Washington Post. A spokesman for the Secret
Service, the uniformed outfit charged with protecting the President
and other officials, told the Post merely that "without seeing the
work, a determination can't be made at this time".

Animated subversion from within?
Animated subversion from within?
06/08/2004 08:51 AM
These
educational cartoons about the upcoming G8 conference are easily
some of the worst pieces of animation ever to be considered
"educational." Could they be an attempt to create animated
subversion from within? Or is it just par for the course when the
government tries to
sell the G8 to the
youth of America? Oh, and if you like the cartoon, try testing your
G8 IQ.

Evincing the fondest
memories of KIT from Knight Rider, the TS100 from Cyber Punk is an LED
watch featuring a mirrored face and several different scrolling
effects on its LED grid. The grid consists of 90 LEDs, and when you
press the button they do their little dance and "fade away", leaving
illuminated what remaining lights are required to tell you the time
(or date). Completely stainless steel, they're available for import
now from TokyoFlash for roughly $140 including shipping, "because you
are a rebel!" An animated graphic on the catalog page gives you a good
idea of how it works.

08/17/2004 01:25 PM
Ever since I interviewed artist
Jim Woodring back in 1995 for
the bOING bOING
Happy Mutant Handbook, I've been enamored
with his surreal comix inspired by his childhood hallucinations and
"psychological malfunctions." Now, Taruto Fuyama has animated
Woodring's Frank character in a beautiful piece that somehow manages
to perfectly express the dreamy tone and emotion of the comic.
(Someone else's attempt
here.) Fuyama won a Prize of Excellence for the work in the Japan
Media Arts Festival. The animation is online in Real format. From the
"Reason for the Award":
"...the greatest appeal of this work is that it had
successfully expressed unique "newness" by combining 3D-CG and
classical cartoon-like design. Alien creatures created by pasting
comic frames to 3D-CG in a Gothic manner generate uncomfortable
feelings, and these uncomfortable feelings that color the entire work
feature this work's contemporary sensitivity."
