Eyebeam fellowship
Eyebeam fellowship
03/22/2005 03:34 PMWhen I started thinking about taking
kottke.org full-time, one of the things I wanted to do was not
work out of my apartment most of the time. But office/work space in
NYC is expensive and I figured I wouldn't have room in the budget for
it. There was also the matter of the proper environment. I just didn't
want to exchange working alone in my apartment for working alone in an
office. A smallish workplace with like-minded folks focused on similar
projects was my goal.
So, I'm pleased to report that starting sometime later this month,
I will be an Eyebeam
R&D Senior Fellow for the next year or so. Eyebeam aims to be a center for art and
technology and with recent projects like Fundrace, ForwardTrack, and
ReBlog, there's quite a
bit of overlap in what Eyebeam and I are interested in. They are not
supporting me financially and I won't be officially working on any
projects for them, but I will be working in their new R&D space in
Chelsea. The hope is I'll not only have a physical place to work but
that both parties will benefit from my presence in that space. That
is, if some of their chocolate gets into my peanut butter (and vice
versa), that would be a good thing.
So thanks to Eyebeam for their support of my personal digital
exploration and am looking forward to working with the other
researchers, artists, and fellows. Here's their post on the subject.

09/10/2004 06:24 PMOne of the handful of English-language books that is easy to buy in
Japan is Dave Pelzer's bestselling A
Child Called "It". Waiting for a train I managed to
skim through most of this popular work and it has come back into my
mind today as I take care of Roxanne, Alex's 5.5-month-old
cousin. Mr. Pelzer says that, as a child, his mother made him
live in the garage and eat scraps of food while his siblings were
dining on lobster at the table. It made me wonder what kind of
book dogs would write it if they could. "While the rest of the
family chowed down on $200 of natural foods from the Whole Paycheck
supermarket, I was nearly starved for the whole day and then confined
to the floor and given one small bowl of 6-month-old dried out nuggets
that had come in a bag."

Why's it called Syndication?
Why's it called Syndication?
06/17/2004 02:52 PMJoffrey Koliante asked...
I keep asking myself what does "syndicate" mean.
I would say that Syndicators are systems that make any content
available as an XML feed. When syndicators
syndicate content, this is called syndication.Right ?
So why do so many blogs, especially Movable Type powered ones,
write "Syndicate this site" rather than "Aggregate this
site?"
The short answer is: because the original use for XML content feeds was truly syndication and the
term stuck.
RSS was first used by Netscape in their
My Netscape portal. Content providers would syndicate their headlines
to Netscape using RSS, a file format that they invented.
The acronym meant "Rich Site Summary." When RSS began being used by individuals to grab
content from multiple locations for display in an aggregator, the term
"Rich Site Summary started to become less and less accurate. Much
of the content was not summaries at all, but rather the content in its
entirety. So a new meaning for the acronym was invented: "Really
Simple Syndication."
If you want the long answer instead of my oversimplification of the
history of RSS, poke around the Web looking
for information about Dave Winer, Netscape, and the different versions
of RSS: 0.91, 0.92, 1.0 and 2.0.
One of the meanings of syndication is the distribution of content
to multiple locations for simultaneous publication. So in that sense,
syndication is a good term for what is occurring. However, the act of
consuming the content (what the end users are doing when they
"syndicate this site") is not technically syndication.
While "aggregate this site" is probably a better
description, "syndicate" is in common use and probably
won’t go away anytime soon. But I’d argue that neither
term is very good if you want mainstream Internet users to pick up on
content feeds.

06/25/2004 12:13 PM
So Kenwood
announced a whole mess of high-end AV amplifiers, but the VRS-N8100,
the "Supreme," is a monster, with a huge array of video formats
[MPEG-1, MPEG-2, Xvid], audio [MP3, WMA, OggVorbis], and still images,
including PNG. Not only that, but it's got a 10/100 Ethernet interface
for lots of lovely streaming, a bevy of surround sound formats,
inputs, outputs -- it's crazy fancy, I'm saying. Plus they even built
in a system that adds back in the high tones to MP3s and other
compressed audio formats that sometimes get cropped during compression
(hearing is believing, of course). TechJapan was kind enough to
translate the press release, and Akiba.SorobanGeeks fished out the
high quality images (and more information on the rest of the Kenwood
offerings).

Movement by Margret S. Elliott and Walter Scacchihttp://ope
nsource.mit.edu/papers/elliottscacchi2.pdfAbstract by Author:Free/open source software
(F/OSS) development projects are growing at a rapid rate. Globally
dispersed virtual communities with large groups of software developers
contribute time and effort often without pay. One force behind this
phenomenon is the Free Software Movement (FSM), a 20 year-old social
movement whose purpose is to promote the use of free software instead
of proprietary software. We show how the ideology of the FSM
influences software development work practices in F/OSS communities
and how an occupational community of F/OSS developers has emerged from
this movement. We present results from an empirical study of a F/OSS
development community, GNUenterprise (GNUe) whose purpose is to build
an Enterprise Resource Planning system. We show how the beliefs in
freedom and freedom of choice, and the values of cooperative work and
community building are manifested in the GNUe norms of informal
self-management, immediate acceptance of fellow contributors, and open
disclosure.

PHP: Free Software on Free Tools
05/17/2004 10:25 AMOpen
Source: Open Source Scripting Made Easy: This is an article about
PHP scripting tools that makes an important point:
Commercial scripting languages have drawn success from
powerful and widely used development tools: ASP has Visual Studio,
ColdFusion has Macromedia's Dreamweaver, and JSP has a variety of
tools from commercial sources such as Borland and open source projects
such as Eclipse and NetBeans. PHP's enormous success, however, is not
tied to specific tools.
Some friends of mine have been working with Microsoft's .Net
platform. They tell me it's amazing ("fan-friggin'-tastic," one of
them called it). This is great, but I guess I don't like anything
where the barrier to entry is so high — first you have to have a
Windows server, then you have to have the Windows dev environment.
I code PHP in EditPlus,
which cost me all of $30, and that was an optional purchase because
there are so many other free alternatives. Maybe I'm just a snob.

all chipmakers that China has apparently rescinded its June 1 deadline
for all Wi-Fi equipment to include a Chinese proprietary security
standard only available for inclusion by Chinese companies. This would
have exposed international intellectual property to companies most
interested in competing with those firms, and would have caused a
fragmented world market. Richard Shim broke this story at News.com

WAPI and related issues put it in conflict with its membership in the
