MacOS Gets Portage
MacOS Gets Portage
07/19/2004 11:41 AM
I may have mentioned
before that I run Gentoo
Linux as the primary OS on my laptop, where I do most of my work
at home. The main bonus of Gentoo is its packaging system, Portage.
I've frequently run in to dependency hell with RPM or DEB packaging systems,
since most distributions have a set of 'approved' software that comes
with the distro, and you have to go 'off the reservation' for other
stuff - downloading from random web sites, etc. Not so with Gentoo.
The portage tree is so huge, I've seldom encountered a piece of
software that's not already available. Want a digital camera tool?
Just 'emerge digikam', and it's downloaded, compiled, configured, and
installed, all in one step. Want to get the latest version of every
piece of software on your computer? 'emerge -U world' right before
bed, and you will have a cutting-edge install in the morning. After
using portage, installing software with RPM's is like a kick in the
face.
And now I read in this
week's Gentoo Newsletter that my favorite package manager works
for OSX as well, thanks to Gentoo MacOS:
a 20-head-strong developer team around Pieter van den
Abeele (strategic lead) and Daniel Ostrow (operational) is now ready
to release an extraordinary beast into the wild: Gentoo MacOS. They
deliver on a promise no other Linux distribution has been daring
enough to make yet: Portage on MacOS is now fully operational,
seamlessly integrated as a package manager in a non-Linux operating
system.
[...]
"Right now it's a tool to install lots of commonly requested
applications on OS X", explains Pieter van den Abeele. "But in a few
months, we'll have a port system that builds Darwin from scratch,
provides a standardised lookup and installation routine for Dashboard
widgets, enhancements and tools like the Desktop Manager and many,
many more popular OS X applications."
Apparently the Fink,
Gentoo, and Darwinports folks are
working together to create a common
packaging method so that there will be lots of software in the
repository, and they won't wind up porting the mess of multiple
package formats in Linux over to OS X. Sounds like it may be a little
early to turn this loose on a production system, but this should
become a fantastic resource for OS X software.

Fix for critical MacOS X vulnerability
05/19/2004 02:47 AMIf you use an OS 10.3 Mac with Safari or MSIE, you absolutely
must follow the instructions in this post to block a really
serious attack that Apple hasn't patched (though they've reportedly
known about this since February). Alternatively, you could always run
Mozilla or one of its variants -- a
free, open source browser in which vulnerabilities are corrected as
soon as they're discovered (not when Apple decides to get around to
it).

Senator Allran wants the state to erase the free game modules from

productivity - not to mention soothing their angst over secretaries

Akiba PC Watch's Weird Items of 2004
01/05/2005 01:45 PM
Akiba PC Watch, a division of Japanese tech
news giant Impress Watch, has posted the results of their "Weird Items
Found in Akihabara" competition. Over 1,000 users submitted a total of
6,305 entries, and exactly 64 products have been labeled "Weird." Many
of the products have been covered here at Gizmodo — such as the
virtual keyboard (1st place), a jacket with solar panels (2nd place),
and even the BACKLIT 82 KEYS (16th place), but many of them weren't
covered by any English speaking site (as far as we know). Highlights
include a 5" drive bay cigarette lighter + cup holder, speakers with
moving eyes, and even a "beef bowl power source." I suggest you try
out Google's new Japanese machine translation on this article, so you
can come to realize it's just as wortheless as every other machine
translation.

06/25/2004 02:00 AMZagreb, Croatia (PRWEB) June 15, 2004 -- For the last two decades
computer telephony was telephony boards based business. It is the time
for changes, or at least that is what folks at Uniqall do think about
it. Few days ago Uniqall made available for free download the first
public beta of its flagship Gridborg 1.0 software that is supposed to
displace expensive telephony boards from theirs well entrenched
positions within computer telephony solutions. [PRWEB Jun 25, 2004]

04/09/2004 04:08 PMI few weeks ago, I was asked to write something about Kurt Cobain for
Black Table.com, because today is
the ten year anniversary of his suicide.
I am always flattered and grateful when someone asks me to contribute
to something, because it makes me feel like a "real" writer, but I
often have to decline, because writing takes time, and time is
something I just don't have right now.
This was different, though, because I thought I had an interesting
take on Kurt Cobain's death, so I accepted. I wrote it up, re-wrote
it, and then got buried in the Star Trek convention and forgot to send
it in until one day after the deadline.
So it didn't make the
article, which is a
drag, because the other writers are all respected and they all wrote
great things. It would have been cool to be alongside them. They tell
me it was cut for space . . . but I just read the other contributions,
and it's pretty clear to me that I'm not yet in their league.
I'm thrilled that I've had this realization while I'm at the tail end
of a rewrite, and I'm terrified about the "sophomore slump." Hooray.
But since I already put the work into it, it seems stupid to just file
it off in the "never got published" directory. Here it is . . .

Telephony R.I.P.?
Telephony R.I.P.?
01/07/2004 03:22 PMI have an iSight and a nice new Mac laptop. I also have a
beat-up old Mac and a
decent Canon videocam that I don’t use that much, not having (yet)
developed videographer’s reflexes. Anyhow, the Canon has firewire
output, so I plugged that into the old Mac and what do you know, it
works just fine with
iChat
AV. So we put the old Mac and the Canon with a little tripod on a
desk in a quiet but wired area upstairs and it’s a free videophone
to anywhere in the world. Restating for emphasis: whenever I’m
anywhere in the world and have an Internet connection, I can have a
free videophone call home, that goes on as long as I need to and
nobody’s counting minutes or running up a phone bill. Let’s see;
free telephone with video, or pay-for-it telephone with no picture.
Costly and voice-only, or free with a picture. I think this is what
an inflexion point smells like.

Vonage, 2nd try for IP telephony
Vonage, 2nd try for IP telephony
12/17/2004 06:36 PMLast summer I switched to lingo.com, an IP phone service that
proved to be cheap but
unreliable. Starting last week Lingo failed altogether and
their tech support folks (available only by phone, which is kind of
irksome) failed to call back, so I ordered Vonage, which is the same
$25/month but does not include Western Europe in its unlimited calling
region and has higher international rates.
Here's how Vonage has worked...
- Vonage sends you a brand-new Linksys broadband router with
included IP phone jacks and three Ethernet jacks; if you were relying
on your old router for 802.11b or to use as an 8-port hub you may have
to buy some new networking gear
- the customer service Web site is very slow and about 25% of the
time page requests produce an error page with a "try again later"
instruction
- tech support is available through a form on their Web site; this
form asks for your name, phone number, account number, etc., even
though you've already logged in and it should have all of his info as
part of your account profile
- tech support via phone results in a "we're experiencing an
unsually high volume of calls; try again later"; customer service
(billing, etc.) can be reached after a 15-minute wait in queue
- they say that they never received my FAXed letter of authorization
to transfer my old number from Lingo and want it refaxed
- when set to simultaneously ring my cell phone Vonage does ring the
cell but I can't hear callers (they can hear me though)
They say that it will take two months for them to transfer the
phone number from Lingo, so I'll have to pay $25/month to Lingo for
forwarding until that happens.
[Update: I believe that I unfairly maligned Vonage in regards
to not being able to hear callers on calls simultaneously rung to my
cell phone. It turns out that it is my PalmOne Treo flaking out
on the very day that I installed Vonage! This makes Treo #10
that has failed, I think. It lasted about two months, just like
the others. Anyone have a suggestion for a GSM phone that will
do a calendar and contacts sync with Microsoft Outlook?]
[Dec 3 Update: When voicemail is pending, the Vonage system
fails to change the dial tone. A second try to reach technical
support (at 1:30 pm Eastern time) resulted in the same "we're too busy
to talk to anyone" recording. The voice quality of calls is
somewhat low, with some constant static.]
