Copy Protected CD's are Worthless

Copy Protected CD's are Worthless 06/17/2005 03:50 PM

What is it going to take to get the music recoding and production industry to wake up. After all how many people actually listen to an actual CD these days. My 99 disk CD player was sold at a garage sale several years ago, and the only thing I play now is music from the file server in my office piped into my stereo via WiFi.

If your pissed off about these anti-copying techniques, then you need to start speaking out. When you buy a CD that has these restrictions call the companies and tell them what you think. Until you stand up for your rights and demand fair use, the recording industry is not going to stop.

Consumers have a choice, and if we step out and say were not going to take it anymore, they will listen. But this takes a lot of people calling them out. So let's get busy. [Techdirt< /a>]

Making Copy Protected CDs Cheaper?

Making Copy Protected CDs Cheaper? 07/21/2004 08:22 PM
The head of Atlantic Records UK seems to be recognizing the fact that copy protection doesn't provide consumers with anything of value, and he has an interesting idea on how to deal with this fact: make copy protected CDs cheaper than those without copy protection. What if you had an option to buy a copy protected CD at a discount, or an "open" CD at a premium? While it's surprising to see a recording industry exec admit the lower value of a copy protected CD, we all know what would happen. Most people would buy the cheaper CD, and proceed to use some sort of workaround to deal with the copy protection. Unfortunately, this also opens the door to the concept of use-based pricing for music. Want to play that CD on a stereo? That'll be $15. Want to play it on a computer also? $17.50. In your car? $20. On your portable music player? $25.

Recording Industry Lies About Copy
Protected CDs Not Playing In Cars

Recording Industry Lies About Copy
Protected CDs Not Playing In Cars
02/13/2004 05:52 AM
Apparently, the BBC ran a story about new, copy protected CDs in the UK, and pointed out that they often won't play on car CD players. They asked a recording industry exec to explain this, and he claimed that the carmakers haven't kept up on CD standards, which is blatantly false. The truth is that the copy protection breaks the "red book" specification of what a CD is. Two years ago, the music industry was sued for putting copy protection on CDs and still calling them CDs - despite the fact that the CDs now violate the red book standard of what a CD is. The Register article points out that the BBC did a terrible job in simply accepting what the recording industry exec said, even when a representative from Volkswagen pointed out that all of their CD players meet the spec perfectly. A good reporter would notice the contradiction and find out who's right. Instead, they leave it up in the air as if it's a disagreement over issues.

Is Intel Building Copy Protected

Is Intel Building Copy Protected
Proprietary File Sharing System Into
Chips?
03/30/2005 05:20 PM
This Reuters story is quite confusing, so hopefully more details are forthcoming that will explain what's really happening. The story claims that Intel has teamed up with media giant Bertelsmann to build chips that are "compatible with" Bertelsmann's new file sharing app. Bertelsmann announced that application last week, and it sounds basically like any other entertainment industry-approved file sharing app. It's not really about file sharing, but creating a broadcast distribution mechanism with a tollbooth. So why is Intel getting involved? That's not clear at all. Does this mean the file sharing system, as currently developed, doesn't work on Intel chips? That seems highly unlikely. What would it be working on? Does it mean that Intel is re-architecting its chips to include this proprietary copy-protected file sharing system at the chip level? That also seems highly unlikely (or, if true, highly disturbing). Intel (and others) make the chips on which all different kinds of applications can run. They shouldn't be favoring one type of application or building it in at the chip level. If anything, this is probably just a marketing relationship, where Intel may be tossing in a bit of help with designing the software. However, it still seems like a strange announcement.

Earlier this week an announcement from VoIP Inc. caught my attention briefly. It appeared like yet another VoIP startup wannabe, that happened to get a pretty good name for getting attention in the space -- if not much else. Light Reading, however, has the details on VoIP Inc. and how it's former name just so happened to be Millennia Tea Masters. The rest of the story is complex, but rest assured in includes convicted felons, reverse mergers and lots and lots and lots of subsidiaries. Not very much actual selling of products (tea or VoIP) though.

While the entertainment industry freaks out that if their content is available online for free no one will buy it, here's yet another example that it's simply not true. Other things, including packaging, certainly come into play. How else can people explain the fact that the 9/11 Commission Report is a best seller, despite being available for free online? At a reasonable price, many people realize it's simply more convenient to have the hard copy.

Confessions of a Cellphone Seller: The
Sprint Edition

We asked our friend Elvi -- who happens to be, among other things, an in-store Sprint representative -- to give us the sweet and low on Sprint's current lineup of phones. Think of it as the same sort of information you'd get if you spent an hour or two of time with a Sprint employee at his most candid. If you are a mobile phone hawker for another carrier and would like to give us your take on your offerings, let us know.

nokia_3588i.jpg imageNokia 3588i
Sprint has often been criticized by the teeny bopper crowd for not carrying any "cool" phones. This infuriates Sprint's purchasing department, who have made major investments in the newest technology and most advanced (read: most expensive) phones.

Sprint seems to have picked up this Nokia model for no other feature than the customizable faceplate that is so popular with twelve year old girls. Now even Sprint has a hot pink phone!

This is the last remaining non-Vision phone in Sprint's lineup. To do text messaging, a separate $5 service is needed. For the same amount, Britney could share the Vision service on mom or dad's account, getting text messaging, web browsing, downloads, etc.

The $150 price tag means that qualifying customers can get this one for free, but I can't imagine anyone choosing this phone for any reason other than price. There are better options available without paying much more.

See those better options after the jump.
