The latest study on spam trends appears to show that financial spam is outpacing pharmaceutical spam - though, honestly, so much of both is coming out that it's really hard to imagine that this matters at all. Meanwhile, it seems that porn spam is increasingly less interesting to spammers as the numbers have been on a noticeable decline for quite some time. No matter what, though, it appears that CAN-SPAM has done absolutely nothing to slow down the amount of spam sent.

As expected, the FCC ruled on the Pulver VoIP petition today, and gave something of a split decision. They claim that "pure" VoIP systems shouldn't be regulated, since they're just like email or any other internet application. However, they're reserving judgment on VoIP systems that more resemble regular phone service, such as Vonage that touch on the PSTN. This seems like something of a cop out, and may be difficult to sustain over time. Most of the "pure" VoIP systems are offering (or planning to offer) gateways that let them connect to the telephone system. Where do they fall along the regulatory spectrum? This would take away the incentive of VoIP providers to connect to regular phone service, creating two different levels of phone service, rather than connecting the two and leading to a more orderly migration. Of course, it still remains to be seen what sorts of regulations they will include for PSTN-connected VoIP. Chances are, they're talking about adding in 911 service and phone-tapping abilities.

I'm an adult now and I have a home and savings and have all my bills in check, but I can never forget what it was like being 18 with my first bank account, back when using an ATM was like playing roulette (and like any form of gambling, I walked away empty handed more often than with any cash). So even though it's been ten years since I've left an ATM empty handed, I can't get an irrational thought out of my head every time I use an ATM: that I'm surprisingly and suddenly dead broke. It's sort of an adult version of the "waking up naked at the exam" nightmare I used to have in college.

Until now. I was poking around my small town credit union website and discovered a new alert feature, where they send an email based on your account activity. So I setup an automatic email that goes to my cellphone's email address when the checking account is below a fairly comfortable level. The feeling didn't leave immediately the next time I used an ATM, but after I saw the feature work when a bunch of bills went through, I now know that it is instantly wired to my bank balance, even when I'm far from a computer.

A lot of stuff I've read about simplifying your life involves removing all those little irrational worries that clog your thoughts and keep you from getting things done and living happy. In addition to this small thing, I've been to the dentist for the first time in years and removed the other big irrational fear that my teeth would fall out any day now. It's been nice to remove these worries from my life forever, as I've got a whole bunch of new worries lined up to deal with. :)

As people entrust more and more of their valuable records -- everything from tax forms to family photos -- to digital media, the idea that those reliable-looking CDs and DVDs could be, well, less than reliable, is alarming. And history tells us that even if the media hold up, the technology needed to retrieve the files may not always be there. When was the last time you used a reel-to-reel tape player? Accelerated aging tests conducted by the Library of Congress and National Institute of Standards and Technology demonstrate that the poorest-quality CDs may last only four or five years; the best, more than 100. Consumers can hedge their bets by keeping hard copy printouts of valuable documents and uploading photos to online archiving services, but in the end, the simple truth is that nothing lasts forever.

Japanese manufacturer Sanwa Denshi has created a special one-handed Playstation 2 controller, designed to work with the online-only Final Fantasy XI. Apparently the control in FFXI are so basic that you only need a D-pad and four buttons, though, and not the full compliment of shoulder buttons and the like - making it wholly unsuited for most other games. That's too bad, too, because all jerk off gamer jokes aside, one handed controllers are a fine idea for RPGs and other games that don't require precise, frantic input. There was a einhanded controller for the original Playstation, if I recall. Somebody should re-release that for the PS2.

Oh, and I like the retractable cord!

For me, nothing beats a good D-pad and an analog thumbstick for gaming, but for the ultimate fighting game championships, it's hard to go wrong with a nice 8-way joystick. And while it's not my favorite stick from history (the metal-shod, Ghostbusters II NES Advantage probably is nearest to my heart), the Neo Geo controller certainly has a certain something, not the least of which is that it was the first home gaming console controller that had a proper joystick (Atari, et al not withstanding).

So all that's to say, Sega Logistics and SNK Playmore have teamed up to release a new version of the classic controller, called the 'Neo Geo Stick 2,' with 4 extra buttons to work with the Sony Playstation 2. It's a strange landscape, isn't it, with Sega releasing an SNK design on a Sony platform.
