Security researchers and the Homeland Security department warned Web surfers on Thursday to be on guard after uncovering evidence that widespread Web server compromises have turned large corporate sites into places of infection. The researches believe and an organized group is breaking into servers and inserting code that takes advantage of two unfixed flaws in Internet Explorer. The flaws allow the servers running Microsoft’s Internet Information Server (IIS) 5 to download code from another server. The CERT is telling users to turn of JavaScript. More…

Global Atlas Of Infectious Diseases

Global Atlas Of Infectious Diseases 12/06/2003 08:39 AM
Global Atlas Of Infectious Diseases - WHO (World Health Organization)
http://globalatlas.who.int/

In a single electronic platform, the WHO’s Communicable Disease Global Atlas is bringing together for analysis and comparison standardized data and statistics for infectious diseases at country, regional, and global levels. The analysis and interpretation of data are further supported through information on demography, socioeconomic conditions, and environmental factors. In so doing, the Atlas specifically acknowledges the broad range of determinants that influence patterns of infectious disease transmission. Over the next year, the system aims to provide a single point of access to data, reports and documents on the major diseases of poverty including malaria, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, the diseases on their way towards eradication and elimination (such as guinea worm, leprosy, lymphatic filariasis) and epidemic prone and emerging infections for example meningitis, cholera, yellow fever and anti-infective drug resistance. The database will be updated on an ongoing basis and in addition to epidemiological information, the system aims to provide information on essential support services such as the network of communicable diseases collaborating centres, the activities of the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network among others.

Infectious fear of mobile viruses

Infectious fear of mobile viruses 07/15/2004 03:36 PM
My latest article for TheFeature.com is about the recent hype about mobile phone viruses, the fear of infection, and the reality of protection:
"Mobile phone virus sounds alarm in Moscow!" "World's First Mobile Virus is Not Lethal, Yet!" While the exclamation points are mine, the words are actual headlines from, respectively, The Guardian and Reuters articles published June 16. A proof-of-concept worm had been demonstrated that infects Symbian-based mobile phones with Bluetooth. The wireless public gasped. Computer security experts yawned.

MySpace????

MySpace???? 04/24/2004 03:25 AM

MySpace: The Show. Social networking is definitely going mainstream. I see in Variety that a reality show is being developed based on people meeting through social networking service MySpace. [Note: the article led me to sign up for MySpace, and I will review... [Get Real]

I'd be interested in what Stowe thinks about MySpace.  I call it the "kitchen sink" of social networking.  I'm amazed at just how many features and capabilities it has.  For what it seems to lack in heart, soul and passion - it makes up with Rankings, Blogs and Games.  They even have classifieds!  And Yahoo ads all over the place!

But there's something about that place - which (BTW) they claim they have more traffic than Friendster right now.

MySpace - is #1

MySpace - is #1 03/06/2004 01:49 AM

According to a PR Newswire this morning Nielsen NetRatings confirms “Myspace.com‘s market leadership in Social Networking category”:

LOS ANGELES, March 1 /PRNewswire/ — MySpace.com, formally launched just over one month ago, today announces it is the number one ranked social networking site in terms of page views, according to Nielsen NetRatings, the leading online measurement tool.
“The latest Nielsen statistics validate what our users have been telling us for months,” said Chris DeWolfe, co-founder and President of MySpace.com. “By allowing our users to dictate the features they want, we’ve been able to develop an offering that keeps them coming back.”
MySpace.com has garnered an ardent and loyal fan base very quickly thanks to the technological superiority of its offering. MySpace.com is the only site of its kind to integrate blogs, instant messaging, classified listings, voting, groups, user forums, music and other user-created content. MySpace.com has also taken an active role in sponsoring music shows, parties and other events for its online users to socialize offline.
“To become the leader in the social networking space in just five months is an accomplishment we’re thrilled about, but we see it as only the beginning,” commented Tom Anderson, co-founder of MySpace.com. In addition to its technological advantages, MySpace.com allows a level of flexibility that is unmatched in the online social networking world. Users are allowed to create personalized web page profiles, which they can then use to link up and communicate with others of similar hobbies and interests. As the site is entirely advertiser-supported, use of the site is free.

[The Social Software Weblog]

This exposes what we've all known all along - that nobody goes to Friendster anymore.  And that it's lack of funtionality and features - makes it a joke.

Now I'm not sure if its MySpace's features, or people themselves - but they sure look like they're having fun over there.

Just got this in my mail - and it's 2AM - so I guess Judith must be asleep - or else she would have blogged it already.

MySpace now has improved their Groups - and added it to their lineup of better blogging, classifieds, very coolio music features and special 'band groups'.

MySpace has proven that it really is about the activities and giving people something to do. IM, Ranking and Games seem to be the core activities.

Business model? Ads. Sposnorships. Special Band Groups. Watch for even mroe ''premium' features that folks will pay for. How many of them - you ask? Over 2M.

Man oh man - I just can't wait for the Reality TV show.

Just gotta convince Tom to support the FOAFnet.

NBC partners with MySpace to stream

NBC partners with MySpace to stream 03/17/2005 03:19 AM
The Office on MySpace Even though the leaked pilot met poor reviews on Metafilter, it's interesting that NBC turned to massive social networking group MySpace to launch the American version of The Office. MySpace will stream the whole first episode of The Office on March 16th at 8PM while the episode will air for the first time on NBC March 24th. Maybe BitTorrent has really gotten to them.

MySpace continues to kick ass

MySpace continues to kick ass 06/30/2004 02:40 AM

Networking website offers marketing opportunities for musicians.

The networking website trend, while not exactly new anymore, is still thriving. While Friendster.com was the first to reel users into the world of organized online socializing, MySpace.com has since caught up. Many formal Friendster loyalists have since moved over to MySpace for its added features such as instant messaging, blogs, and classifieds. (That~s not to say that Friendster doesn~t still have its own dedicated fan base.) One of the site~s most recently added features, MySpace Music, is utilizing the networking space to spread the word about music artists.

Consumers tell us that they mostly find out about new music through their friends, which is exactly what MySpace Music allows users to do online. While musicians can also create profiles on Friendster for friends-of-friends to see, MySpace Music takes the concept a step further by offering band Web pages and music downloads, thus turning the site into a potential marketing tool. Similar to how Napster users can view other users~ music libraries, MySpace users can view each others ~friends~, thus providing MySpace Music artists with considerable exposure and access to their fans. With the buzz on MySpace Music, we expect to see more networking sites offering similar marketing opportunities in the future.

Oh No, Technology Is Going To Steal Your
Job... Again
06/25/2004 12:11 PM
This is getting a bit tiresome, but it looks like now that people are finally starting to calm down about offshoring, they're suddenly up in arms about automation. First there was the complaint a few months ago saying we should stop working on certain technologies in order to save jobs. Now, Strategy Analytics, an analyst firm that should know better than to put out overhyped reports that don't understand history is saying that offshoring is nothing compared to how automation will kill mid-level service jobs. Once again, all you need to do is look at history to show this is wrong. Every time automation removes the need for certain jobs, it's opened up many more opportunities, often expanding the overall economy and raising our standards of living. It wasn't that long ago that you needed a human operator to connect every phone call. However, once we figured out how to automate that process, it didn't necessarily mean a destruction of all those operator jobs, but a new revolution in telephony which expanded so many businesses and created so many new jobs that no one could have imagined when the "operator" process was first automated. It's getting repetitive to say it, but innovation is not a zero-sum game. Automating a job doesn't just mean that the jobs go away, but that many more new opportunities open up.

Will Intel Steal the Show?

Will Intel Steal the Show? 03/08/2004 11:15 PM
Intel's moves in the Wi-Fi market may squeeze out other players in the market, including access point makers: Intel is moving toward building chips that can allow a laptop to serve as an AP. Some say if that becomes standard gear in laptops, it may threaten the vendors that make standalone access points. I have to agree with some of the comments in this story that while in some cases it is convenient for a laptop to serve as an AP, at other times it isn't. I would prefer a standalone AP in my house because otherwise I'd have to keep my laptop running all the time. I suspect that laptops with built-in APs will appeal to a certain market but it won't kill the market for standalone APs. Intel could also give TiVo a run for its money as it develops chips for entertainment PCs. TiVo is apparently working to make its product cheaper and easier to use in anticipation for the competition....
