CMP Says It's Not Blocking Google

CMP Says It's Not Blocking Google

CMP Says It's Not Blocking Google 06/25/2004 11:54 AM

CMP Techweb.com's editor in chief, Fredric Paul, says the report I linked to yesterday is incorrect. He writes:

Anyway, we saw that you picked up the CyberJournalist piece on CMP blocking access to our stories from Google News. I don't know where that came from, but it is wrong. We do not and have never blocked access from Google or any other search engine. That's easily testable, try it yourself. We do, however, intercept links from certain competitors who reproduce significant portions of our stories on their own pages -- sometimes even stealing the first link-- before they finally post a link to our original material. In most cases, the intercept we put up allows the reader to then click to their intended destination. Other major technology publishers, including IDG, do similar things. We're not just old media, and we're not completely clueless.

Now Google Getting Sued For Blocking
Trademarked Terms

Now Google Getting Sued For Blocking
Trademarked Terms
12/12/2003 03:10 PM
A few months back, France fined Google for selling ads based on trademarked terms. I was surprised, because in my own experiments with Google ads, I've had a few ads that were rejected because they (according to Google) contained trademarked terms. Personally, I don't see how buying a keyword is, in any way, a violation of trademark. The point of a trademark is to protect the company from having someone else appear to be you. You can't sell Bob's Cola and put a Coca-Cola label on it. However, if someone is looking for Coca-Cola, there's nothing wrong with suggesting they might also want to look at Bob's Cola, as well. Anyway, now it looks like Google may get hit from the other side as well. They've been fined for selling ads based on trademarks, and now, apparently, they're going to ge t sued for blocking ads based on trademark complaints. The pending lawsuit apparently says that Google is banning ads on terms that aren't trademarked as soon as anyone complains. That is, Google doesn't check to see if there's an actual trademark - they just ban the ad as soon as there's a complaint. The group that's going to sue says they've brought together over 3,000 complaining advertisers who have had ads blocked. As mentioned, I've had my ads blocked too, but this seems like a ridiculous lawsuit. Where in the law does it say that Google has to sell you ads for whatever you want? They have the right to reject ads for whatever reason they want. It is their system, after all. If people believe they're blocking ads unfairly, then isn't that an opening for competitors to better serve advertisers by offering them something that Google doesn't?

Big Bug: Google Blocks All Results When

Big Bug: Google Blocks All Results When
Blocking Spam
10/28/2003 11:08 PM
Seth Finkelstein has made a startling discovery, backed with lots of evidence: when a spam result comes up in a search, Google not only blocks the spam, but every result after it. This means that for searches where spam results manage to rise to the top, very few -- sometimes zero -- results will be returned. Examples: motorcycle candle, keyboard bracelet. These are common words for which you'd expect to see results (in fact, the latter even says there are thousands of results) but the bug prevents them from being seen. Eliminating the spam pages (by blocking a word, antenna, that appears on them) allows full results to be displayed. It's pretty amazing that such a serious bug made it past Google's tests. It will be interesting to see how quickly it's fixed....

Yahoo blocking Trillian again! 06/24/2004 04:40 AM

I Love Trillian and I am not real Happy with Yahoo at this moment seems the idiots over their are blocking those of us using Trillian as our IM client. Who in their right mind wants 4-5 Instant Message clients sitting on their taskbar especially when the can run one program and have them all. It is a beautiful thing I don't get spam advertised and I used to be able to login to all 4 of my IM accounts.

The solution is simple tell all of those that I chat with on Yahoo to move to one of the remaining services that are not blocked. Yahoo just doesn't get it do they, no wonder they continue to loose the browser war and screw up every other half assed service they run. [ZDNet]

Firefox to Strengthen Pop-up Blocking

Firefox to Strengthen Pop-up Blocking 04/05/2005 11:52 AM

say goodbye (again) to pop-ups!: Here's why a lot of sites have managed to get around Firefox's pop-up blocking lately.

A lot of people have been reporting a new breed of pop-ups on the web. This increasing menace is rooted in the pop-up capabilities of plug-ins like flash and Java. If you're seeing pop-ups and pop-unders, you're probably visiting sites that have flash or other plug-ins and those plug-ins are being exploited by advertisers to abuse you with annoying pop-ups and pop-unders.

Mozilla is taking steps to strengthed pop-up blocking, which is good news because I've seen it get a lot worse lately. Via Slashdot.

At the Berkman Center this afternoon, the lunch-time topic was countries that block access to particular sites. We heard about the Berkman's study of Saudi Arabia's practices. Jonathan Zittrain helped start the project when he realized that many people assume that if you could overcome the economic obstacles to global access, everyone would magically be on line. But even when the connection is there, countries are imposing limitations on what can be accessed. The project checks what's being filtered by the local ISPs. The study began in 2000 and is being done in conjunction with U of Toronto and U...

University Policy Handbook Index
http://www.campus-adr.org/Staff_Admin_Building/searchpolicies.html

The primary purpose of the University Policy Handbook Index is to assist users who are exploring the creation / revision of Conflict Resolution policies at their institution. The index does this by providing access to examples from other institutions. You can search all of the Policy handbooks in the index or narrow your search to a category that matches the audience you are creating / revising a policy for. The index is not limited in any way to Conflict Resolution related policies, but rather attempts to index all the web-accessible handbooks at major institutions in the United States. Thus it should prove useful in a broad range of circumstances. As of October 1, 2003 there are 975 records in the Policy Handbook database from 691 universities / colleges in the United States.

Sites That Suck: This site is worthy of a browse — it's a gallery of painfully-designed Web sites (sadly, the site itself doesn't look all that great). I like the use of vacuum cleaners instead of stars to measure how much a site "sucks," and great commentary like this:

I would assume that at some point, an actual person decided that a hit counter wasn't enough, and that it needed to be an animated hit counter that comically rolled at such a speed that it caused you to imagine traffic so intense that the poor counter couldn't keep up. Oh the hysteria!

It's in blog format, so there's an RSS feed.

Why registration-sites suck

Why registration-sites suck 07/20/2004 06:15 AM
Wired News has a good piece on the backlash against the growing trend of news-sites requiring logins to read their articles, covering automated tools like the Mozilla bugmenot plugin that automatically spoofs your logins to 14,000+ sites.

The point that everyone seems to miss is that no one can possibly keep track of a thousand passwords for a thousand websites, which means that these sites undoubtably contain recycled passwords (admonishments from security experts to never recycle a password are the infosec equivalent of telling people to "eat less and exercise more" -- simplistic doctrine that is vanishingly unlikely to be adhered to in the field).

The more you recycle a password, the higher the likelihood that you will use it in a sensitive context -- a bank site, a message board, an IM client, an auction site -- where someone might impersonate you or even commit identity theft crimes against you.

What's even worse is that while these news-sites are willing to spend the computational cycles necessary to receive your password, none that I've seen use SSL for their login, which means that the NYT and others demand that you send your password in the clear when you sit down at a WiFi cafe and want to read the password. This is a potential disaster if that NYT password is also a sensitive one somewhere else: it's a case of really callous disregard for user privacy and security. Link

You Can Pay For Your Homework Online,
But Most Likely It Will Suck
04/07/2005 02:24 AM
In the last few years, one of the biggest issues that teachers and professors have had to deal with is that many students are buying papers off the internet. There are a number of tools, like Turnitin, that try to catch students in the act, but now some are pointing out that, students who buy papers online may get "rewarded" in another way. Most of the papers are just plain bad and won't get the student a particularly good grade. Of course, this was hardly a scientific study. It was just one professor checking out a few different essays available online. However, it still makes you wonder what sort of person would buy a paper online when there's absolutely no way to judge the quality of it? Oh, right, the sort of person who buys a paper online probably is too clueless to recognize that quality might matter.
