Yet More Microsoft Insecurity Outrages

Yet More Microsoft Insecurity Outrages

Yet More Microsoft Insecurity Outrages 06/25/2004 11:54 AM

  • BBC: Web browser flaw prompts warning. Users are being told to avoid using Internet Explorer until Microsoft patches a serious security hole in it. The loophole is being exploited to open a backdoor on a PC that could let criminals take control of a machine.
  • Infoworld: MS issues warning on Web attacks, pushes XP SP2 beta. Microsoft Corp. acknowledged Thursday that Internet Information Server (IIS), a component of the Windows 2000 Server, and holes in the Internet Explorer Web browser are being used in widespread attacks that are compromising Web pages and using them as launching pads for malicious computer code.
  • How many billions of dollars of damage is Microsoft's inadequately secure software causing every year? Why is the company not liable for any of its nonfeasance? Where are the trial lawyers on this one? I don't get it.

What a price Bill pays for giving Allchin his head. Bill says, "Trust us -- we're going to change the world. Trust us -- we're laser-focused on preserving your privacy. Trust us -- we're making it easier to write .Net-aware apps." But backstage it's a different message: Microsoft .NotYet. Trust us -- we're patenting the HailStorm schemas. Trust us -- but we're not rewriting our apps in .Net. Trust us -- we're locking you in with licenses for upgrades that will never happen because -- trust us -- we're going to change our minds. -- Steve Gilmor

Since these were passive scans, it's impossible to tell whether those access points were inside or outside corporate firewalls, and thus not open portals, but it's likely that the overwhelming majority were just plain open. Music Social Insecurity

Music Social Insecurity 11/12/2003 01:34 PM
R Dickson writes in with a link to an article talking about the social impact of music sharing, asking what would someone think if they were able to look at what music you listen to. He also wonders whether or not the government could use that to try to "classify" you. The article itself talks about the concept of "playlistism", where someone is discriminated against due to the sort of music they have in their shared music folder. I'm reminded of the line from one of the music snobs in Nick Hornby's High Fidelity, when he says something to the effect of "you should be judged not on what you are like, but what you like." Apparently some folks are changing their listening habits just to change the impression they give people. Of course, I don't think this is all that different from life prior to music sharing. I remember a friend of mine going through my music collection when I was in junior high or so, and telling me what was okay to keep and what needed to be ditched. A lot of folks end up listening to what their friends listen to anyway, so this is just expanding the ability to do that. As someone who seems to listen to a lot of music that not many others listen to, I really have no problem having people know what I listen to - and I'd bet that anyone who went through just my music collection would have a hard time guessing the type of person I am.

    11/13/2003 12:36 AM
A security vulnerability exists in Microsoft Word that could allow malicious code execution. This vulnerability exists due to to the way Word checks the length of a data value (Macro names) embedded in a document. If a specially crafted document were to be opened it could overflow a data value in Word and allow arbitrary code to be executed. If successfully exploited, an attacker could then take the same actions as the user had permissions to carry out, such as adding, changing or deleting data or files, communicating with a web site or formatting the hard drive.

    Blogspot is hurting America

Blogspot is hurting America 03/14/2005 05:37 PM

Blogspot is currently broken. While it always aimed to be the place to get a free weblog, it has been the subject of various exploits and gaming.

Case in point: yesterday I got a porn spam that slipped through since the from: line was set to my own email, and amid the garbage text was a URL on blogspot. This URL:
    http://trampling-high-heels3169.blogspot.com/

If you go there and check it out, it pretty much as the exact same text as the spam, but the URL leads to the spammer's real target site.

A friend recently returned from a anti-spam conference and said someone gave a demo of a spamming tool. They showed how it grabbed a zillion email addresses from a database, started churning out the email while hopping from one free open proxy server to another, and one curious last step was to automatically create a new blogger account, create a new site on blogspot, and load the email text from the spam as an entry. The last step was to raise the search engine position for the spammer's site and message and was completely automated.

When folks are using a blog host for spam and it becomes a key feature of automated spamming tools, I think it's time to fix it.

How about adding a captcha at the very least, to thwart those doing automatic script-based spaming of blogspot?

Porn Sites Using Blogspot To Game Google

Porn Sites Using Blogspot To Game Google 08/03/2004 12:32 PM
I think the only thing that's really all that noteworthy about this story is that it didn't happen sooner. In fact, it probably did happen sooner, but the press is just catching on. For quite some time now, people have realized that blogs tend to get higher Page Rank in Google due to their frequently updated nature, and tendency for cross-linking, so a group of porn sites have gotten together and are using bogus Blogspot blogs to boost the Page Rank of their own porn sites. Of course, as the article points out, this will now get to be much more popular, search engines will adjust and it will become useless again.

Check out the Technorati Beta; several days each week I think Technorati is at The White-Hot Center Of It All, but that rests on the assumption that blogs are meaningful or even (dare I say the word) important. And I just don’t know; I’m too close to the problem. But I sure go there a lot.

What is Technorati? 01/22/2004 02:29 AM

If you're one of the tens of thousands of people who use Technorati every day, you'll notice that most of our changes (on the new beta site so far have been under the hood. Changes to the body have been minimal. As a result, we've been scratching our heads because we've never explained exactly what Technorati *is*. For that matter, we've never explained much about what a "cosmos" is, either -- even though that's what Technorati finds in its searches.

So I thought it would make sense to ask you what Technorati is. Is it a search engine for blogs? A conversation engine? Or something else again?

Same with "cosmos." Is there a more self-explanatory word for what Technorati finds? Or a better way to say exactly what "cosmos" means?

Let us know. We'd like to hear from you. Thanks!

    What's up with Technorati 11/17/2003 05:46 AM
David Sifry's Technorati service -- a blogmining and analysis system that can tell you the shape and velocity of the blogosphere at any given moment -- has been cranky and creaky for a couple days now. Sifry has posted an update to his blog, with info on how things are going and the difficulty of keeping pace with blogging's amazing growth.
Allow me to give you some growth statistics: One year ago, when I started Technorati on a single server in my basement, we were adding between 2,000-3,000 new weblogs each day, not counting the people who were updating sites we were already tracking. In March of this year, when we switched over to a 5 server cluster, we were keeping up with about 4,000-5,000 new weblogs each day. Right now, we're adding 8,000-9,000 new weblogs every day, not counting the 1.2 Million weblogs we already are tracking. That means that on average, a brand new weblog is created every 11 seconds. We're also seeing about 100,000 weblogs update every day as well, which means that on average, a weblog is updated every 0.86 seconds.

Technorati and CNN 07/21/2004 04:38 PM

A few minutes ago CNN announced that Technorati will be providing real-time analysis of the political blogosphere at next week's Democratic National Convention. I will be on-site in CNN's convention broadcast center, along with Mary Hodder, and I'll be providing regular on-air commentary on what bloggers are saying about politics and the convention. And on Sunday, July 25, we'll launch a new section of our site for political coverage: politics.technorati.com. This site will make it easy for bloggers,
journalists, and anyone interested in politics to see the postings of the most linked-to political bloggers, to track the ideas with the fastest-growing buzz, and to monitor conversations in thousands of other political blogs. CNN.com will link to this site, and we'll be updating the CNN site with the latest from the blogosphere.

This is a very exciting development for us at Technorati, and a great acknowledgement of the importance that blogging has achieved in political discourse. We're incredibly humbled by this opportunity. It provides us with a great way to serve all of you who make this amazing new medium possible. We take this responsibility very seriously and hope to make you proud.

man, it's been a crazy couple of weeks. there are some really interesting projects (and a couple others that i can't yet link to) out there that are committing to drupal . the really exciting part is that, for whatever reason, some people have decided that i'm a drupal god. well, i'm completely flattered (though, the real deity in the drupal world is certainly still dries). the end result has been getting to meet lots of interesting people and it looks like i'll be working on lots of very exciting projects moving forward.

i'm pretty excited. i've really enjoyed getting involved in the drupal community, there are some outstanding folks involved, and the future is very bright. yay!
