Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) SoftPhone, eyebeam, which, like
other SoftPhone software previously released by the company, will turn
your Mac into a phone that can place and receive calls via Voice-Over

Software Settings Sychronization
Software Settings Sychronization
12/26/2004 05:35 AMHere's something I'd love — the ability to synchronize two
installations of the same software on two different computers.
I'm thinking right now of Thunderbird.
I have so many settings customized — email accounts,
RSS feeds, custom search rules, address book entries, adaptive spam
filters, etc. Settings I tweak on my installation at work, I have to
come home and recreate on my installation at home.
For instance, I haven't even set up RSS at home, because I got a
little weary of just recreating the feeds I had at work. I change one
at work, and I have to change it at home, etc.
Another example: I get a lot of automated emails. Not spam, but a
lot of emails like blog comment notifications, cronned job reports
from our servers, etc. I have a fairly intricate saved search set-up
in Thunderbird to find all these emails so I can mass delete them a
couple of times a day. There are about 14 parameters in the search,
and I have to remember to change the one at home if I change the one
at the office.
The FTP Bookmarks Sychronizer for Firefox came very close to this,
but my version of that hasn't worked with Firefox 1.0. Even if it
did, bookmarks are just the tip of the iceberg.
I think client software developers in general need to consider that
users are likely to run the same software on different machines, and
there should a mechanism to mass dump all the settings and
parameters so the user can get a second installation running exactly
like the first.
(I got deja vu while writing this, and — sure enough —
I ranted about this same thing over a year ago.)

Deploying Windows Firewall Settings XP
SP2 (v2.4)
08/13/2004 10:26 AMWindows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) includes the Windows Firewall, a
replacement for the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) in previous
versions of Windows XP. Windows Firewall is a stateful host-based
firewall that discards unsolicited incoming traffic, providing a level
of protection for computers against malicious users or programs. To
provide better protection for computers connected to any kind of
network (such as the Internet, a home network, or an organization
network), Windows XP SP2 enables Windows Firewall on all network
connections by default. This new behavior can impair some types of
communications. This article describes how to deploy the appropriate
configuration settings for Windows Firewall on an organization network
so that it is enabled and providing protection, and so that
communications are not impaired.

It's Time for URL-Specific Browser
Settings
It's Time for URL-Specific Browser
Settings
02/01/2005 09:08 PMHere's what I'd like to see for upcoming browsers: customized
browser settings on a URL-by-URL basis. I think it's time to admit
that different sites sometimes require vastly different browser
settings to work optimally.
For instance, I visit some sites that scroll horizontally. To see
them completely, I need to remove the Firefox sidebar. I display some
reports on my intranet that I alway end up going into Full Screen mode
to view. I normally don't pass HTTP referrers (see this), but some sites suppress images without a referrer to
prevent hot-linking, so I need to pass a referrer to them.
Then there's the browser-based printing thing I complained about the
other day.
It'd be very handy if Firefox could do all this for me. I could
see having default settings, but overriding individual settings per
site. So for a URL with a wildcard of
"http://intranet/wide_reports*", supress the sidebar and go into Full
Screen mode.
This is probably hard from a technical perspective, as Firefox
would essentially have to scan all the settings every time a page
loaded. But what a difference this would make. Provide some
centralized control and it would be fantastic for intranets, since you
could control not only the page, but have some form of control over
the environment the page loads into.
