Nice hidden Panther feature

Nice hidden Panther feature

Nice hidden Panther feature 10/31/2003 04:03 PM

According to this you can share image capture devices like scanners and cameras with image capture in Panther. I just tried it myself, and although my iSight doesn't show up as a capture device (which would make it a pretty cool webcam), my mounted compact flash card from my digital camera does. I poked a hole in my firewall and just showed a few friends some photos I just took, but haven't downloaded yet to my mac.

Very cool hidden feature.

Here's the trick: First, create an empty folder called "PDF-Services" in the Library directory. Once the PDF Service function is activated in this way, various services defined by the user (so-called "droplets") can be placed in the folder. They then become directly available via the print dialog.

Hidden feature: use Mozilla inside

Hidden feature: use Mozilla inside
FeedDemon!
05/10/2004 08:37 AM

FeedDemon relies on Internet Explorer for its embedded browsing, and although it works very well, there are many who would prefer to use Mozilla inside FeedDemon. But as I wrote about a few months ago, my experience with enabling Mozilla inside of TopStyle taught me that it's too much of a support burden.

However, I'm not one to deny features to my customers :)

So, if you'd like to use Mozilla inside FeedDemon and can accept the fact that it's an unsupported feature, I'll show you how to enable this hidden feature. Note that this is only available in the FeedDemon 1.10 pre-release - it's not available in version 1.0.

First, you'll need to download and install the Mozilla 1.7 control from the URL below:

http:// www.bradsoft.com/download/MozillaControl17t1.exe (4.49MB)

Note that you must install the control, even if you already have Mozilla or Firefox installed.

Next, open RegEdit.exe and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Bradbury\FeedDemon\1.0, then add a DWORD value named BrowseEnableMozillaOption and assign it the value of 1. The next time you start FeedDemon, you'll notice a new "Use Mozilla" checkbox on Browsing page in Options - just check this box to start using Mozilla inside FeedDemon.

I've been using Mozilla inside FeedDemon for several days without incident, but again I have to caution that this is an unsupported feature, so use it at your own risk. I can't guarantee that it will work reliably, nor can I promise that it work as smoothly as the integration with Internet Explorer. I'm sorry that this disclaimer is necessary, but unfortunately, past experience has taught me that it is.

So here's a nice little Exposé trick that some of you might not have found yet. Press F9 or F10 to show either all the windows you have open or only your current apps windows. Now press TAB to cycle through to the grouped windows of the next app you have open. You can keep pressing TAB to bring each set of app windows into focus. If you know what app you're after, you can Apple-TAB to bring up the app-switcher and choose it directly. Have you found any nice little bits of functionality yet?

The Hidden Gem of MT3

The Hidden Gem of MT3 06/29/2004 11:36 PM

Da vid Raynes: SubCategories 1.2: There was much complaining when Movable Type 3.0 came out that there wasn't anything new in it. To a large extent, the complainers were right — there was very little new functionality...on the surface.

The real gem of MT3, it turns out, is the new plug-in architecture. Six Apart is very smart — why write a ton of new features when you can just polish up your API, then have your customers write the features for you?

Consider the above link — parent-child categories for MT, something that people have been requesting ever since I've been using the product. David Raynes wrote a feature-complete, polished system for the MT3 architecture. Six Apart didn't have to lift a finger.

I have a feeling that we're on the verge of a tidal wave of MT functionality. We're going to see things that we never even dreamed of six months ago, and then we're all going to say, "so that's what they had in mind when they released MT3 with no new features..."

What a Nice Day

What a Nice Day 12/16/2002 12:12 PM
It is really snowing hard outside. But it's not quite cold enough for it to accumulate to anything significant. I only wish I had a camera to capture it, this one, specifically. With U2 playing in the background, and no real plans for today, it's really a nice morning. If you've come here from Stonefishspine, welcome. If you haven't, you're okay too. Over the weekend I spent a lot of time collaborating (coblogerating?) with G.K. Nelson of Stonefishspine on a new kind of commenting system to integrate with pMachine, a blogging (Content Management) system. I'm very happy with the end result. If you'd like to see it, head over to Stonefishspine and click on one of the "Comments" link under any entry. The system uses one part PHP, and two parts DOM-compatible Javascript. The whole thing only required about four lines of additional code added to pMachine, on top of its own files, which aren't too large. If it doesn't work for you, its likely because your web browser has lack-luster (I've never actually typed that phrase before) support for the Javascript DOM. So far, GK and I have confirmed that IE6/Win, Mozilla Win/Mac, and Opera 7 handle the system just fine. IE/Mac doesn't seem to like it, though; I'm working on it. From my coding perspective, two things were crucial in designing the sytem. One, if the user's browser didn't support the Javascript DOM, they would still be able to comment, via a popup window. For example, try to comment in Opera 6 and you'll get the standard commenting popup window which can see the same comments the dynamic version does. This brings me to the second important point, pMachine compatibility. I determined early on that if I was going to make the system work fluidly with pMachine, I would a.) have to do a lot of coding, or b.) figure out a way to make it work with pMachines existing infrastructure. In the case of the former, compatibility may have been lost in the next pMachine release. However, because of how pMachine is designed, I was able to use the latter approach. Because of this we were able to complete the project in just over a day and a half, instead of a week I think it would of taken if I had to make it interact is pMachines database system, which would of involved talking to three different tables. Because of this simple interaction with pMachine, the whole system would be easily ported to other people's installations of pMachine. Likely, at some point in the future when all the bugs are worked out, the entire system will be available to anyone who wants it. I may even have to enable commenting on my installation of pMachine to take advantage of the system. :)

Nice Cup of Tea and a Sit Down

Nice Cup of Tea and a Sit Down 04/22/2004 10:44 AM
There are many reasons I love the Internet, but the fact that weblogs like Louise Garston's exist would have to be one of them. "Nice cup of tea and a sit down" is the Internet hub for cake, tea, and biscuits. That's it. Period. Simple. It's totally sincere and sweet, and full of breaking news about which flavor of jam is most popular for discriminating toast aficionados, newly resurrected teas, and so on. Sometimes, Louise posts tea-and-biscuit related art, like a portrait of "Two little old space-alien ladies having a nice sit down." At present, Louise is pretty worked up about the fact that the "iconic" biscuit known as Tim Tams have recently become available to UK consumers, after a long and ardurous struggle. "Tescos sell them now," says Louise. "Hooray, you have to tell everyone, they're fantastic! Enjoy!"
