12/13/2003 03:43 AMDo you rue the range of your Graphite Base Station, seek softer

limitations of your iTunes music library? There's no need to feel
hemmed in by transitory travails when help is at hand. This month's
Mac 911 gives you a beneficial boost over each of these barriers.

04/10/2004 02:29 AMGone are the days when you knew what you were getting when you bought
a font -- back when fonts could hold about 225 characters (PostScript
Type 1s, for example). Now we're in the era of OpenType fonts, which
can contain tens of thousands of characters and even do tricks with
these characters, such as automatically substituting one for another.
Macworld Secrets: Colorful Photoshop
Macworld Secrets: Colorful Photoshop
07/07/2004 11:03 AMAdobe Photoshop CS is possibly the best program for manipulating
digital photographs. But it's also a capable program for coloring
scanned artwork. This is especially valuable because it's easier to
draw on paper, with a pencil or a pen, than it is to sketch on screen,
if only because you can see an entire piece of paper without zooming
or panning. And it can be easier to add colors in Photoshop than it is
to hassle with conventional paints or assemble fussy mechanicals. I'll
show you how to apply color to scanned line art in Photoshop.
Throughout this process, you won't harm a single stroke in the
original drawing. It really is the best of all worlds.

06/29/2004 10:56 AMApple's .Mac subscription service offers a wide array of functions for
Mac OS X users, from an e-mail account and the easiest Web-based
photo-sharing around to virus busters, backup software, and server
space for storing your files. But many people don't realize just how
much they can do with that $99 subscription. A lot of .Mac's functions
are hidden in its Web site, so subscribers must dig to discover them
all. The .Mac service can even keep you organized when you're between
computers, and those computers don't have to be Macs. Whether you're
traveling across the world or across town, .Mac can help keep your
contacts, e-mail, calendars, and files accessible, but not too
accessible, without much planning.

Macworld Secrets: Animatics in Final Cut
Pro 4
12/22/2003 05:17 PMAnimatics are animated storyboards -- usually set to music, with sound
effects and temporary dialogue -- that professional filmmakers,
commercial agencies, and special-effects artists use to visualize the
look and tempo of their projects. To create your own animatic, all you
need is a set of storyboard drawings, a batch-capable scanner, and a
Mac equipped with Apple's $999 Final Cut Pro 4. With Final Cut Pro 4's
RT Extreme feature, you can preview the animatic in real time as you
build it. And when you're finished, you can output the animatic from
Final Cut Pro 4 to tape, DVD, or a Web site.

04/09/2004 03:55 PMLaptop owners adore PowerBooks and iBooks for their snazzy looks,
light weight, and excellent resale value. Unfortunately, thieves like
them for the very same reasons. And the person who steals your laptop
not only nabs your hardware but also may gain access to financial
records, corporate data, credit card numbers, and other sensitive
information. There are ways to protect your computer and your data.
Whether you lash down your laptop with steel cables or apply
military-grade data encryption across your hard drive, protecting your
laptop takes some effort -- but it may be easier than you expect.

04/09/2004 03:55 PMIn several recent incidents, thieves have stolen equipment worth
thousands of dollars from Brigham Young University. The staff of one
department took matters into their own hands and set up a surveillance

high-end, expensive equipment was necessary -- just Apple's $150
iSight camera and a $20 software program called EvoCam.

06/18/2004 09:29 AMWhether you're commuting to work or headingacross country, nothing
beats music for passing the time. Until a few years ago, audio CDs
were the only way to get digital sound in your car. But now, thanks to
portable audio players, satellite radios, and MP3-compatible CD gear,
it's easier than ever to listen to clean, digital music on the road
(see "MP3s for the Road” for tips on burning MP3 discs). For a fee,
satellite radio receivers let you tap into 24-7 digital programming.
If you'd rather listen to your own tunes and playlists -- and many
more songs than a CD can hold -- an iPod is the way to go. Mobile
installations range from basic dashboard mounts to stealthy setups
that conceal the iPod and let you control it remotely. There's a
system for just about any car.

MacMice GarageKey USB MIDI Keyboard
MacMice GarageKey USB MIDI Keyboard
07/30/2004 07:07 AM
Jack Campbell of
MacMice has announced a new 37-key USB MIDI keyboard called
'GarageKey,' designed specifically for use with Apple iLife '04's
GarageBand software. For $130, there are probably more full-featured
Casios or Yahamas with MIDI output -- and really, MIDI output is
pretty much MIDI output on something like this, although MIDI-over-USB
is potentially more convenient for many -- but the GarageKey does have
the benefit of being a decent size to fit on your desk.
I wonder, though, did MacMice really build the GarageKey as they
say, or did they license it from another manufacturer? Because some people have been taking
them to task lately for claiming to be the sole inventors of products
that turn out to be rebrands. Nothing wrong with rebranding, mind you,
but saying you built it might be stretching a bit.

I just thought an accordion post would
brighten my day a bit, so here goes. This super-sexy Lady of Spain
machine uses physical modeling to simulate the look and feel of a real
accordion, while adding a high-tech edge to your best Chicken Dance
rendition. MIDI makes it digital, and the FR-7 even includes built-in
speakers, so you can be a one-man polka band.
That said, please pop over the jump in order to see why you should
NOT buy a mildly weird kid an accordion. While I do appreciate that my
parents introduced me to music at an early age, if you are in a
similar situation, please consider buying the little tyke a
Stratocaster and a practice amp.
