Experimenting with FeedBurner
06/17/2005 07:17 PMI've switched this blogs's feed over to FeedBurner to get a better idea
of what they're all about. If you're viewing this in an RSS reader, can you do
me a favor and update it to use http://feeds.feedburne
r.com/NickBradbury as the URL for this feed? In FeedDemon, this
is done by right-clicking on the feed in the channel bar,
then selecting "Properties" and entering the new address.
Update: Several people have asked me whether
FeedDemon automatically handles redirects - it does. However, my blog
is hosted by TypePad, which like other hosted blog services doesn't
provide a way to redirect your feed to a new location.

Nextel Still Experimenting
Nextel Still Experimenting
04/26/2004 12:59 PMDespite a trial and now commercial service of a broadband wireless
offering in North Carolina, Nextel is reportedly still examining other
technologies: Mobile Pipeline reports unnamed sources who say that
Nextel is evaluating gear from IPWireless, though not in any public
trials. While it's interesting to note a vendor by name, it's not big
news that Nextel is looking at other equipment in addition to Flarion.
The company has been fairly open about its interest in a variety of
different technologies, ranging from CDMA-based networks to
proprietary gear from Flarion. I've talked to a few analysts who say
that Nextel is very seriously considering WiMax. IPWireless was once
often mentioned by the 802.20 crowd as an active follower but recently
seems to have jumped ship to the WiMax world....

Experimenting AI Lab Robot
Experimenting AI Lab Robot
01/16/2004 11:01 AMReuters says that British researchers have created a
Robot Scientist that Conducts and Interprets Lab Tests The
article says that the robot can formulate theories and do research and
works as well
as a grad student. (er, um, Did the robot verify that claim with a
control subject / grad student?) They did say that
there were no differences found between the lab results from the robot
and from those gathered by grad students.
But at least they do say the tasks they have given it were simple ones
and that it's unlikely to
put anyone out of a job. So basically, this robot harbinger of the
future can take the grunt work out of doing lab experiments, allowing
robots to yet again free the world from drudgery (that professors
usually dump on grad students).
One researcher says, " If you opened it up I think humans would have
the advantage. We tend to be more flexible "
If it really can figure out things for itself, the scientists may have
invented themselves out of a job!

DJ Spooky's new book Rhythm Science
DJ Spooky's new book Rhythm Science
07/01/2004 03:58 PMDJ Spooky (aka Paul Miller),
early supporter of Creative Commons, has recently released his new
book, Rhythm Science. The
subject matter is very Creative Commons in philosphy as he explores
ways to think about rebuilding culture. Here's an excerpt from the
site:
"Taking the Dj's mix as template, he describes how the artist,
navigating the innumerable ways to arrange the mix of cultural ideas
and objects that bombard us, uses technology and art to create
something new and expressive and endlessly variable."
He's also in the process of releasing Rebirth of a Nation, a
remix of D.W. Griffith's 1915 Birth of a Nation. Since
the original film is from 1915, it is now in the public domain. More
to come on this soon.

Music Download Store Experimenting With
Demand-Based Pricing
Music Download Store Experimenting With
Demand-Based Pricing
01/08/2004 08:41 PMOne of the very good complaints about online music stores is that they
offer all songs at the exact same price - which doesn't make much
sense in the market place. So, one company is trying to test that out
by
offer
ing dynamic pricing for its downloadable songs. The songs all
start at the low low price of $0.10 per song, and then fluctuate based
on demand. The company is still paying the $0.67 per song price to
the music labels, so they're losing money on plenty of songs - but are
saying that's the cost of the experiment. After they've spent the
amount they've set aside, they'll go back to the old way of pricing.
There are a few problems with this. First, explicit dynamic pricing
tends to get a negative reaction from consumers - who feel they get
ripped off when someone else bought the same product from the same
store at a lower price. More importantly, though, true market pricing
isn't just a function of demand - but of supply and demand. In this
case, there's an infinite supply, so we're not really talking about
market pricing at all. Furthermore, this service competes against
plenty of other services that charge around a dollar for songs, so
there's a clear upper limit on what they can charge for any song, no
matter how popular. An interesting experiment, certainly, but not
necessarily indicative of market pricing.
