INAX has come up with some tiles that are "not cool." The
"Thermo Tiles" feature bazillions of microscopic air bubbles inside,
reducing their heat conductivity. It seemed to me that reducing heat
conductivity would be a bad thing when you wanted something to be
warm, but the problem apparently isn't in the tiles themselves.
It's with your feet; reducing heat conductivity allows your feet to
retain heat that would normally escape.
Don't expect to see/feel these outside of Japan anytime soon. Just
in case you happen to live there, though, prices start from 12,600 yen
per square meter.

Wired awake07/29/2004 11:32 AM Soldiers in the field go for days without rest. Now, an investigation
has found the British Ministry of Defense has been buying a new
stimulant in bulk.
I woke up at 7:30AM when my phone beeped with an incoming SMS. It
was a message telling me that Min had just checked in. I forgot to
turn off dodgeball and
the SMS was telling me where Min was in SF and that she had checked
in. Now I know why they call it "dodgeball". ;-p For those who haven't
tried it yet, dodgeball is a cool new service that is a location based
SNS that lets you "check in" and it sends a SMS to your friends to
tell them where you are. But it's not very useful when I'm in Madrid
and Min's in SF. ;-)

provide jointly infrastructure aimed at companies who want to deliver
audio and video services to their customers. Microsoft isn't standing
still in this space, however; at the end of last year, it announced
with Loudeye a service for businesses that want to build online music
stores.

Moore's hysterical, empty threats. Of course, multimillionaire
Moore can always punish his critics financially by filing silly
lawsuits that require them to spend huge sums to be dismissed as
frivolous. But Moore is not likely to want that sort of publicity and
heartache—it's as much a drag to sue as it is to be sued. And a
man with his sort of assets isn't likely to tempt a countersuit by the
defendant when the case is tossed out. Moore isn't likely to find a
more severe appraisal of his film and his work than this Slate piece
by Christopher Hitchens. Read it, Mr. Moore. We invite your
suit.
Not content to rest on his laurels as "that one guy on
the X-Files and then that spin-off that tanked," actor Dean Haglund
used his natural ability to place things under other things (a skill
developed through years spent on casting couches) to develop the
'Chill Pak,' a cooling pad filled with reusable gel that is designed
to lower the amount of heat dumped from sperm-boiling laptops. The $20
sack of sack protection is even made of a special material that
prevents condensation, keeping any bags jammed below your laptop sweat
free.

What's up with Technorati11/17/2003 05:46 AM David Sifry's Technorati
service -- a blogmining and analysis system that can tell you the
shape and velocity of the blogosphere at any given moment -- has been
cranky and creaky for a couple days now. Sifry has posted an update
to his blog, with info on how things are going and the difficulty of
keeping pace with blogging's amazing growth.
Allow me to give you some growth statistics: One year ago, when I
started Technorati on a single server in my basement, we were adding
between 2,000-3,000 new weblogs each day, not counting the people who
were updating sites we were already tracking. In March of this year,
when we switched over to a 5 server cluster, we were keeping up with
about 4,000-5,000 new weblogs each day. Right now, we're adding
8,000-9,000 new weblogs every day, not counting the 1.2 Million
weblogs we already are tracking. That means that on average, a brand
new weblog is created every 11 seconds. We're also seeing about
100,000 weblogs update every day as well, which means that on average,
a weblog is updated every 0.86 seconds.
