Microsoft Corp. today announced the creation of the Anti-Virus Reward Program, initially funded with $5 million (U.S.), to help law enforcement agencies identify and bring to justice those who illegally release damaging worms, viruses and other types of malicious code on the Internet. Microsoft will provide the monetary rewards for information resulting in the arrest and conviction of those responsible for launching malicious viruses and worms on the Internet. Residents of any country are eligible for the reward, according to the laws of that country, because Internet viruses affect the Internet community worldwide.

Edwards retrospect

Edwards retrospect 07/29/2004 10:05 AM
I didn't see the Edwards speech on TV, so I'm not entitled to have an opinion about it. Worse, I had to follow along in the transcript in order to parse the few sound waves that managed to drag themselves up to the 7th floor Valhalla where the bloggers sit in judgment. Nevertheless, I hereby judge him absolutely, and in four categories: 1. Content. I like the Two Americas theme and the recognition that race matters in this country. With these, Edwards uttered truths we all know but that need to be said flat out instead of studiously ignored...as with...

Macworld review: Retrospect 6.0

Macworld review: Retrospect 6.0 06/17/2004 01:19 PM
Everyone has a mission-critical application -- that one program they can't work without (Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Excel, or Apple's Final Cut Pro, for example). But backup programs are mission critical for all users, no matter how they earn a living. Dantz Development's Retrospect backup software, the most popular of this genre, performs full and incremental backups of local and networked Macs and saves data to a wide variety of storage devices. Many people waited to upgrade to Mac OS X until Retrospect 5.0 was available for the platform. And many people have also held off on upgrading their servers to Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther), due to its incompatibilities with Retrospect 5.1. Retrospect 6.0 addresses those incompatibilities but otherwise offers only a few new features, which are aimed at people using Retrospect to back up very large amounts of data.

Who's cloning who?

Who's cloning who? 03/29/2005 02:16 PM
Clonus (AKA Parts: the Clonus Horror) was released on DVD today. This ultracheap 1979 sci-fi thriller is about a compound where clones are raised, unaware that their purpose in life is to provide harvested organs (more detail here). MST3K sent it up, the Onion sneers at it, but this NY Times review (reg. reqd., scroll down) is respectful. You can rent it now, or you can wait until July for the megabudget, Michael Bay-directed version of the same damn story.

What do you if you're in an unchartered area with no reasonable law enforcement, and criminals are running rampant? You convince everyone to become the "enforcement" arm and find someone rich enough to pay them to help fight crime. Microsoft can't be bothered to fix a few of the holes in their programs that make it incredibly easy to pass on viruses, so instead, they're setting aside $5 million for anti-virus bounty hunters who can track down anyone responsible for worms, trojan horses or viruses. The rewards will be given out in $250,000 wads of cash from Bill Gates wallet increments. So, now, who's going to round up an anti-virus posse?
