iChat with Your TV

iChat with Your TV 06/09/2004 02:04 PM
Andy Ihnatko: "In 2003, millions of baseball fans were forced to watch afternoon postseason championship games on tape, for heaven's sake. You're in an office with a Mac and a broadband connection, and you've got a Mac at home with a broadband connection. What if you could open a video chat with your TV from any iChat AV-equipped Mac in the world, to watch and hear, in real time, what your TV was receiving?"

iChat Retouched

iChat Retouched 10/28/2003 11:06 PM
It occurred that piping iChat AV video frames through iPhoto's enhancement fun(ctionality) before broadcasting one's mug, warts and all, to the world might be a nifty feature. If only before having one's coffee.

I fully admit that this feature request comes from the same part of my brain that had hoped the digital magic of DVDs would allow you to apply intelligent filtering to movies. Imagine "Contact" sans any scenes involving Matthew McConaughey. Or "Star Wars, Episode I", each frame scrubbed of that phantom menace, Jar Jar.

High-End iChat

High-End iChat 04/30/2004 07:19 PM
I should confess that I am the worst kind of obsessive high-end audio weenie. Fortunately, it’s my only really expensive hobby; I distinctly prefer beer to champagne. Anyhow, this creates a problem: when you upgrade your system to get better sound, what do you do with the old stuff? High-end gear tends to last more or less forever, and unlike computers, is usually 80% as good as what you replace it with. So, I’ve used some of that stuff to cobble together a home-office system. I’m taking the audio feed out of my PowerBook via USB to a (now apparently discontinued, sigh) Stereo-Link D/A converter, then through very decent Linn interconnects to an all-tube (and very beautiful) Cary Audio Design “Rocket 88” power amp, driving a pair of the original Totem “Model One” speakers (a dozen years old now). You can bet that I’m happy that iTunes now includes a lossless music encoder; I’m going to have to go back and junk all the existing MP3s I’ve ripped and grab ’em again. Anyhow, I just had my first audio iChat talk since I got this wired up, with Paul Hoffman, on the subject of Atom and the IETF. It was astounding, remarkable, unlike any mere “telephone” experience. Had I shut my eyes and you’d told me that Paul was sitting across the desk, I would have believed you.

Set iChat Status 1.0.1

Set iChat Status 1.0.1 04/22/2004 08:13 PM
This is a totally impractical app I wrote, because I had too many status messages saved in iChat, and the scrolling annoyed me. It's dead simple. Pick a status, enter a message, (or not) and click okay, or hit enter. Updated some minor back end script handlers, and it's now built in FacesSpan 4.0, instead of AppleScript Studio.

iChat as phone

iChat as phone 02/10/2004 02:42 AM

Here's something I hadn't thought of: using a bluetooth headset with iChat. I already use iChat a great deal for communicating remotely with coworkers, but I usually wear big stereo headphones and use the iSight as the mic. Instead I could be wirelessly talking and listening using something like this.

I always knew iChat coupled with an iSight was a killer combo and I greatly prefer it over regular conference calls, but with a bluetooth headset it becomes even more useful for one-on-one conversations between other people with the same setup. Heck, if everyone you knew had a powerbook, iSight, and a bluetooth headset, this would kick ass all over Voice Over IP systems.

iChat AV at 35,000 Feet

iChat AV at 35,000 Feet 06/23/2004 10:29 PM
It’s a long flight from Munich to San Francisco, even non-stop. But recently two enterprising Apple product managers cut the distance dramatically with a few at-hand tools: iChat AV, iSight, 17-inch PowerBook G4, a Boeing 777 and an orbiting satellite. [Jun 23]

So, I can video-chat to Simon Phipps in his place in Southampton, England just fine. Steve Gillmor can video-chat to Simon too. But Steve and I can’t video-chat to each other. ConnectionDoctor says Steve’s not responding to my UDP packets. NatCheck says nothing’s wrong. I turned off my firewall, but I’m sitting behind a DSL modem and a D-Link router that may be screwing things up. Mark me puzzled.

Jabber support in OS X 10.4's iChat 06/30/2004 07:14 PM
This sounds like it's going to be really cool. AppleInsider has an article about 10.4 Server features. One of the new features is an "iChat Server" so you can run your own private and secure iChat server. The best part? It's based on the open source Jabber Server. The iChat server works with both the iChat client in Mac OS X Tiger and most other popular open source clients available for Windows, Linux and even PDAs. Apple's press release....
