A new federal obscenity sentence has been issued against a Montana man who operated a catalog business called "Suzie's Corral." Gary Robinson was said to have sold bestiality and scat videos, distributing them via UPS. AFAIK it's the first such obscenity prosecution in Montana, period. The Billings Gazette has more:

The videotapes, which had titles like "Dogs and Horses and Pigs and Chickens," contained graphic scenes of bestiality and other sexual activity that involved excretory functions, Mercer said. Transportation by common carrier of obscene material in interstate commerce is a crime, Mercer said, and is not protected by the First Amendment guarantee of free speech.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1973 that to be obscene, material must appeal to the "prurient interests," be "patently offensive" and lack serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value. The court said obscene material should be judged by local standards. Ultimately, the local standards would be decided by a jury.

Ed Felten is suggesting that a way to deal with the question of protecting children from seeing porn, a standardized, voluntary method of tagging content as "adult only" should be adopted. It's a simple idea. Basically add an <adultsonly> tag to HTML. It could block whole pages, or just sections of content. Browsers that don't recognize it would ignore it, but most browsers would probably add a simple filtering method. The incentive, Felten believes, is that adding that single tag would exempt sites from being charged with violating any laws related to letting children access porn. In some ways, this is similar, but much simpler, than the plan to set up a voluntary .xxx domain for porn. Legitimate porn sites would like it because it also would help people who are legitimately looking for porn find them. The adultsonly tag, beyond just being used to filter, could also be used as metadata for search engines trying to specifically find porn -- which would be a benefit for porn site operators.

So, yesterday I did a tour just as the post-dinner speakers began at 6:50. So I discovered this awesome thing. If you sleep three extra hours in the morning, you'll feel fantastic, but for some reason, everything is three hours ahead. Perhaps if I had been sleeping on this KLOC Floor Lounger last night instead of a hard subway bench I wouldn't have neglected my internal clock's alarms -- not that it is meant for sleeping. Instead, the idea is that, when surfing or playing games or whatever, you'll have a handy lump to learn against, like an accommodating neighborhood floor-level hunchback. For Macintosh only (because of the Mac, right? Get it?).

Mark Frauenfelder: In the latest edition of Cool Tools, James Tierney reviews a $10 floor cleaner called the RoboMaid that looks a little like a Roomba.

Robomaid is a low tech, very cheap version of Roomba cleaner.  It doesn't clean rugs, but has done a great job on our wood, tile, and stone floors.   The design is wonderful in its elegance: a powered ball propelling a sweeping "hat".  Like Roomba it cleans along walls, under tables and desks, and in corners where it would be difficult to clean otherwise.  It uses no intelligence, so it randomly changes direction, but is surprisingly thorough.  Especially since I don't care how long it takes.

George writes: "It holds 32 Carrying cases, 4 cases of OTC figures, and loads of Galactic Heroes, including the C-3PO and Chewbacca set. One interesting thing is that the Stormtrooper that comes with the Vader carrying case is a POTJ Sandtrooper, minus the pauldron and dirty paintjob. Hasbro even gave him the correct blaster."
