mysql_connection 08/06/2002 01:47 AM

Current Version: 1.1.2 This class is in charge of establishing a connection to the MySQL server. This class is a wrapper of the basic functions like open, close, send sql, send command. It allows personnalized error trapping and can also trap errors for you but in a very gruesome way stopping all execution. It also offers several usefull functions like: - sql_insert_id() which returns the last inserted id by this connection - sql_data_format() which will transform any ' into a \' format so the sql string will not suffer brutal stops because of a misplaced ' The basic information you need to use this class is what follows: Step 1: Create the object needed: hostname, username, password and database used by this connection Step 2: Open the connection call: open() Step 3: Send any sql request or sql command call: send_result_sql() or send_command_sql() Step 4: Close the connection call: close() For more information on: Usage, Technical data, Version History Lookup the files for this class on the web site http://www.phpclasses.org/

No I Didn't Forget About the Bookmarklets ...

Feedster!  Now available as a bookmarklet!  Get it here.  I tested this on both PCs and an OS X iBook.  The PC stuff worked but the OS X stuff did not.  I have no clue why.  And before Mozilla Andy jumps all over me, I did them for Mozilla too.

That's about it for the day.  Database is much larger, the pool of RSS urls is larger.  New hardware soon.  Good stuff overall.

Miscellaneous and Random Stuff

Oh and here's the rant of the day: Stupid, Stupid VB.  Even better than the bile I spewed this morning about ASPx stuff.  This one covers the myriad of human factors issues in Visual Basic.  I'm an ex-VB guy and I can attest to every single one of these.  I'd also add one more -- why is the dialog box for selecting COM objects to insert onto a form tiny?  I mean I have hundreds of the damn little things and I look thru them in groups of maybe 15.  Hello?  Microsoft Product Managers?  Anyone Listening?

Inbox Buddy

I've gotten some questions about my Inbox Buddy anti-spam product and does Feedster mean that we're now not doing that?  Nope.  We have the resources and committment to do both.  In fact, we'll be pushing the 1.1 version of Inbox Buddy out the door next week with some improved anti-spam features and performance enhancements.  If you use Outlook then you really might want to check out Inbox Buddy.  The people that have it pretty much love it to pieces.

Note: I'm one of the people who wrote Inbox Buddy so keep that in mind.  That, however, doesn't mean that its not a good product.

Tara "Google Hacks" Calishain has created a bunch of neat Google bookmarklets for Moz/NS/Opera and MSIE that allow you to replace your bookmarks with "I'm Feeling Lucky" keywords. Simply click the bookmarklet, enter your keyword, and be whisked to the canonical googlepage for that string. Lin k (Thanks, Tara!)

Feedster/Bloglines citation bookmarklets

Feedster/Bloglines citation bookmarklets 07/19/2004 08:12 AM
Feedster's Scott Rafer wrote to point out that there is a URL syntax for assembling the conversation around a blog post:
http://www.feedster.com/links.php?url=

http%3A%2F%2Fweblog.infoworld.com%2Fudell%2F2004%2F07%2F16.html%23a104
1
You need to escape the target URL, which isn't easy to do while copying and pasting it, but is easy for a bookmarklet to do. So, drag this link -- Feedster Citations -- to your toolbar, and you can have one-click access to the conversations around any blog post you're currently viewing. ...

Thanks to Milly for sending word of a Google Toolbar update. New features include a Google Answers link and support for URLs that are broken apart (such as wrapped URLs in email). If you're running the toolbar you can use the experimental features setting to search Dictionary.com from the Combined Search button. Milly also has a series of Google bookmarklets, to search different parts of Google and things like the Microsoft Knowledge Base. They don't seem to work in IE5/Mac. If you're using that, you might be more interested in my own Googler or DTRT, which let you search all the Google's from the comfort of your address bar....

Download of the week: Speed Download 2

Download of the week: Speed Download 2 12/07/2003 04:05 PM
After reading a forum post yesterday inquiring about DSL vs. cable download speeds (specifically Cox Cable), I though I’d write about one of OS X’s more underappreciated applications. Let’s face it. If you’re using OS X, you’re using the Internet; and if you’re using the Internet, you’re looking for one thing: speed. For most people, dial-up just doesn’t cut it anymore, and for some, cable speeds still aren’t enough. While Safari and Camino have taken care of many gripes about page...

Apple has released Mac OS X v10.3.2, an update to its "Panther" operating system, available for download through the Software Update System Preferences pane. Apple also notes that a standalone installer should be available, though it didn't appear to be available yet as MacCentral posted this article. The new update is recommended for all users, according to Apple.

Must download TV

Must download TV 08/11/2004 11:30 AM

Farhad Manjoo has written an excellent report on IPTV.

Aug. 11, 2004 | Hollywood's nightmare scenario is that high-definition TV will become "Napsterized," with shows available online to anyone, anytime, for free -- which may sound, to some TV fans, less like a nightmare than a heavenly dream.

And, indeed, despite Hollywood's efforts, it's a dream that in many ways is coming true. While the government and Hollywood fret over ways to keep high-definition television off the Internet, copies of standard-definition TV shows are now heavily traded online. Once an underground activity plagued by hard-to-use tools and less-than-stellar picture quality, the systems for finding and downloading TV are steadily becoming easier to use, and the current watchability of the shows is nothing to scoff at.

In recent months, a host of developers and TV enthusiasts have been working on ways to improve the TV trade online -- they're building sophisticated trading networks to record and encode and distribute shows, and they're improving peer-to-peer transfer systems to make downloading easier. The hottest new improvement is made possible by the merging of two of the Internet's newest innovations, the p2p protocol BitTorrent and RSS, the popular Web syndication standard. Together, these systems allow a computer to automatically find and download a user's favorite shows -- something like having a TV station designed just for you.

More RSS Links

More RSS Links 09/14/2004 04:41 PM

Over the past few days I've collected a few links of interest to RSS junkies:

One of your links...

One of your links... 01/04/2004 02:42 AM
I was showing a co-worker the war chalking symbols and tried to access one of the pictures, the jpg one, and it took me to this site: http://main.netster.com/Index.asp?Site=c2NyZWFtY2QuY29t NOT the one that is referenced. Also, upon closing that browser, I was prompted for two things, one "Do you want to make nester.com your homepage?" The other, do I want to install and run (some) program? Spyware, I'm sure.) To which I couldn't respond NO fast enough. I just thought you'd like to know that your links might be more than people are bargaining for. Don't know what your thoughts are on it, but I wouldn't want to subject my vistors to those things, no matter the cost. Thanks for listening.

Hot Links

Hot Links 02/10/2004 02:44 AM

The thing I love about RSS, and by extension web services, is that they allow people to take publically available data and combine it in ways never thought of by the originator of the feed. The internet is awash with examples of this, from useful services such as Feedster to useless amusements like I despise you and your so-called taste, the most insulting extension of the Amazon API I've seen to date.

Hot Links is the neatest new serice of this kind I've seen in quite a while, spotted a few weeks ago thanks to a vanity PubSub subscription. Hot Links subscribes to a bunch of RSS feeds for link logs (or blogmarks or whatever you want to call them) and watches them for newly linked sites. When it spots one, it grabs a thumbnail sized screenshot using khtml2png and posts it along with the description cribbed from the link log. Sites linked to from more than one link roll are promoted, allowing Hot Links visitors to restrict their "level" and view only sites with a certain minimum number of citations.

Syndicating link logs like this is a smart idea, and the people behind Hot Links have pulled it off in a stylish manner with great attention to detail. I particularly like the ability to view links from just my blogmarks as it provides a neat visual reminder of the sites I've recently recorded.
