What's a namber? A
namber is a word that acts as a mnemonic for a number. For
example, 65 is
drum, and 181 is
push.
A
namber address uses an arbitrarily-chosen list of nambers
to represent each of the numbers from 0 to 255 in order to assemble
four words to represent any IP address. Metafilter.com's namber is
earth
.frog.brown.tooth, and mysteryrobot.com conveniently provides
translation and forwarding to the real IP
address.

08/06/2004 11:37 AMNews columns are
full
today of news about Google's apparently delayed public offering.
There's little doubt that the IPO will happen, but the glitches,
technical and otherwise, are not helping the company's reputation.
Nor is its methods in handling potential investors. As my colleague
Mike Langberg points out today, there's a powerful arrogance at work
in
excl
uding small investors from road-show presentations.
As I've said before, I
don't recommend this IPO for small
investors unless they have very long term horizons and a high
tolerance for risk -- and even if I could buy tech shares (I can't) I
wouldn't bid at anywhere near the price the company has suggested.
It would be good for everyone, including Google, if the mania subsides
a bit. Maybe the news we're hearing is the beginning of a new
rationality. I hope so.

the liquid cooling units from the soon-to-be-shipping Apple Powermac
G5 2.5GHz boxes, if you just absolutely must see them right at this
minute. It looks to have the typical Apple fit and finish. Would it be
too much to start referring to the cooling radiators as being filled
with 'Apple juice?' (Thanks, Mharris!)

06/22/2005 01:58 AM
Zalman has officially announced its Reserator 1 Plus
passive water cooling system, a hulking black upgrade to the blue
model first released over a year ago. The new model includes new CPU
and GPU cooler designs as well as providing an anti-corrosive water
additive in the box. I hope they changed the internal pump they used
on the previous model, as I discovered the 1 Plus while searching for
solutions to quiet the clattering propeller in the original Reserator
sitting on my desk.
Since Zalman's website doesn't really have good information on the
Plus 1, have a look at this pre-production model "review" on Hexus
(really more of a 'we saw this thing at a show'). The release model
isn't blue, but black, and will cost $300. Despite the noise problems
I'm having with my current one, I sort of want to upgrade, but only
because that would be a convenient excuse to build a whole new gaming
rig.

ThermalTake Liquid Cooling System-Rocket
ThermalTake Liquid Cooling System-Rocket
03/28/2005 10:30 AM
ThermalTake is listing the 'Liquid Cooling
System-Rocket,' a fanless water cooling system for PCs that uses a
similar design to that of Zalman's Reserator. Unlike the Reserator,
the System-Rocket's water pump is inside the case instead of inside
the cooling tower itself, which means not only will it obviate an
additional power cord, but should also make it easier to upgrade the
pump if desired. And of course, the internal pump has an
industry-standard blue LED, the international system symbol for 'Here
Be Max-treme Computing.'
As obnoxiously phallic as these type of coolers are, they provide
serious cooling with no fans at all, making for a very quiet PC.
