Does A Mobile To VoIP Bridge Break Any
Laws?
Does A Mobile To VoIP Bridge Break Any
Laws?
12/30/2004 02:25 PMThe concept of a mobile to VoIP bridge is nothing new. We wrote about
a company doing
exactly
that back in May. The idea is that most VoIP plans have unlimited
calling within the US (and sometimes Canada) and cheap international
rates. So, if you could call into your VoIP phone from your mobile
phone, and then redirect the call outbound, you could, in some
circumstances, save money. Of course, it's fairly limited
circumstances. An increasing number of mobile phone plans include
virtually (i.e., thousands and thousands of minutes) unlimited US
calls already. So, this sort of thing really only makes sense for
someone who makes a ton of phone calls from their mobile phone, and
often makes international calls -- where mobile rates are likely to be
much higher. However, last month, a company named Xcelis, who is
selling a similar VoIP bridge box made a lot of news for trying to
offer the same thing as a
service. That is, rather than
hooking up a box to your home VoIP system, they hooked up the box to
their own VoIP system
and to a mobile phone. Since Cingular
and T-Mobile offer unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling, the $10/month
service lets you then redirect out your calls. Yes, if you read all
of this and think it's only useful for a small group of people
and sounds somewhat complicated, you're probably right.
However, the mobile operators are a bit nervous that they might lose
out on some international and airtime revenue and are suddenly
trying to
see what they can do to stop such a service. The answer is
probably "not much," for now. It's not breaking any laws, though
Verizon seems to think it constitutes a violation of their network
(though, it's unclear how). What's more likely is that mobile
operators will start putting terms in their contracts that explicitly
forbid people from doing something like this -- which is unlikely to
stop the few people who this is actually useful for.

'This is what I call a mobile computing

'This is what I call a mobile computing
platform'
07/15/2004 10:09 AMOn previous travels, I've discovered over and over just how bad a
place a car is to operate a laptop. (Naturally, I'm talking about when
safely parked.) In the driver's seat particularly, I've found no way
to sit with a laptop that's even halfway comfortable, never mind
OSHA-approved. To gain clearance from the steering wheel, I lean back,
and slide the seat as far back as possible. It's not a back-friendly
way to compute. The car-friendly laptop platform I ordered before this
trip, though, makes a huge difference. Car computing is still a pain,
no question, but it's considerably less of one with your laptop
resting somewhere other than your actual lap.

Wi-Fi/Cell Phone Combo Requires 802.11a
Wi-Fi/Cell Phone Combo Requires 802.11a
05/28/2004 05:08 PMAvaya, Motorola, and Proxim combine on a handset that talks Wi-Fi in
an enterprise and cell elsewhere--but only the 802.11a flavor of
Wi-Fi: Requiring the use of 802.11a is an interesting choice, because
it avoids many of the interference, latency, and dropped packet issues
present in using an overtaxed, QoS-free 802.11b/g network. With
802.11a, you could conceivably devote several in-building channels to
voice or have a sufficient density and overlap of coverage that you
wouldn't suffer from bandwidth lacks. One analyst quoted in the story
suggests that enterprises will eventually all use 802.11a, but I'd
like to see some evidence of that. A number of vendors sell a/g
equipment for the enterprise, and I've seen no information on an
upswing in dual-radio adoption. A more compelling option for 802.11a
is via products that have multiple radios or multiple channels in a
single box, such as products powered by Engim's chipset. In that
model, because each access point could have several hundred Mbps of
actual throughput through bonded or standalone channels, it would be
worth deploying the denser installation required by 802.11a. 802.11b
and g have substantial limits on total system speed because of their
staggered and overlapping channels....
