It’s not about about being a serious beta tester anymore, these days it is about being one of the few or one of the first. This trend has really shown it’s face lately with the beta program for Google’s Gmail. While it is not a state secret that it is a beta service being offered by Google, you practically have to be royalty to get yourself invited to become a user. The odd thing is…

Buzz on Voice over Wi-Fi Grows

Buzz on Voice over Wi-Fi Grows 05/09/2004 03:46 PM
Signs are pointing towards widespread ability to make Voice over IP (VoIP) over Wi-Fi calls: But will revenue follow? Many of the uses of voice over Wi-Fi reduce costs or shift usage; one firm puts revenue in 2009 for long-distance Wi-Fi voice calling at just $20 million, according to the article. But cell phones with Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi phones aimed at the home market could drive more rapid adoption. Imagine a single phone that you carried everywhere, but with higher quality and lower cost than a cell phone whether in your house or deep in a convention center. The main problem with a roaming Wi-Fi phone is authentication on networks that require accepting terms at a gateway page, logging in, or paying for use. These are not insurmountable problems....

People are beginning to notice. There have been lots of little signs creeping up on everyone, and suddenly you look around and it feels like Silicon Valley is booming again. Companies are doing well. There's lots of hype - and where there's hype, there's venture capital cash. Of course, this time around everyone claims they've learned their lessons from 1999, but just wait and see what a few hot IPOs will do to selectively erase some memories.

Gizmodo Buzz Index: Blu-Ray Vs. HD-DVD

Gizmodo Buzz Index: Blu-Ray Vs. HD-DVD 09/23/2004 09:01 AM

GBI_01.gif imageGizmodo Buzz Index: The most accurate graphs since cavemen first scratched pie charts into the walls of French caves. The upcoming high-definition format war is heating up, with Sony and company backing the Blu-Ray format (Sony confirmed yesterday - to no one's surprise - that the Playstation 3 would in fact use Blu-Ray discs), while NEC and Toshiba (and Microsoft?) is pushing the competeting HD-DVD standard. There's not a clear winner yet - the standards are just dipping a toe in the market at the moment - but for now, it looks like Blu-Ray is winning the GBI by a large margin. HD-DVD really needs a major product backing it now. How about Xbox 2?

Update: Reader Damian Roskill makes a good point that both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are planning to use Microsoft's hi-def codec, so Big M is (rightly) hedging its bets at the moments. In a way, that makes the format choice of the Xbox 2 even more interesting.

Press Release:

Yahoo! Research Labs, Yahoo!'s organization for advanced research in science and technology, has teamed with O'Reilly Media, the premier information source for leading-edge computer technologies, to develop a joint research project called the Tech Buzz Game, an online prediction market that allows consumers to forecast the popularity of technology concepts, products and trends. The game was introduced today at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology conference. The Tech Buzz Game leverages search query volume and frequency on Yahoo! Search to measure a term's popularity or "buzz." It mirrors the functionality of the stock market, enabling participants to "buy" and "sell" virtual shares in their favorite technology terms based on their estimates of future value. The game, which is powered by NewsFutures (http://www.newsfutures.com), the leading provider of prediction markets software, utilizes new patent pending market and auction mechanisms invented at Yahoo! Research Labs by Dr. Gary William Flake, Yahoo!'s principal scientist, and Senior Research Scientist Dr. David Pennock. The Tech Buzz Game is divided into separate markets that fall into topic areas such as hardware, software, mobile and web. Each market pits rival technologies against one another. For example, the "Browser" market includes Internet Explorer 6 and Firefox among others. Participants would buy stock in the technology they believe will increase in search popularity. "The Tech Buzz Game is a fundamentally new type of online auction that will allow us to determine how well emerging trends can be predicted by the collective wisdom of crowds as correlated with Internet search terms," said Yahoo!'s Dr. Flake. This has been added to Information Futures Markets Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Google Buzz Index: Big PMPin'

Google Buzz Index: Big PMPin' 06/28/2004 06:31 PM

Gizmodo-gbi_pimpin.jpg image

So this week's Google Buzz Index might not be as interesting to everyone else as is it is to me, since I'm writing about Personal Such-and-such Players all week long, but it's something I really had wondered about, especially with the influx of new media players coming out of Asia. I really didn't expect "personal video player" to take such a huge lead, but there's no mistaking it -- that's the term most used to describe these devices. I'm a little disappointed, too; I'd much rather use 'Personal/Portable Media Player' as it is a more accurate description of what these devices can do. Once we ever get around to changing our categories, my guess is that PortableMedia will still be what we go with over PersonalVideo, numbers be damned.
