Cellphone charger plus sterilizer
12/04/2003 01:17 PMPerhaps we underestimate how germophobic people are these days, but is
there really that much demand for a cellphone charger that sterilizes
you're phone while it's being recharged? If you're the only person who
uses your phone, what's the big deal? Read [Via SmartMobs]...

Cellphone charger also disinfects
12/04/2003 08:22 PMA Korean outfit has announced a cell-hone charger that also disinfects
the handset. I need one of these for airport touchscreen check-in
kiosks, which always seem to be covered in a thin film of Burger King
and mucous.
According to the company, the germ-killing products are equipped with
an airtight container and a special lid on top of the normal
charger’s body to sterilize the digital gadgets during recharging.

So this thing, the sun, is capable of
being more than just a big, bright, hot inconvenience? According to
Soldius, yes. Their cell phone solar charger can give a full charge in
only two or three hours in direct sunlight. It uses a technology
called Maximum Solar Power Tracking and is compatible with most cell
phones: Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, Siemens, Sony Ericsson and most 3G
models. Right now, it is limited to cell phones, but expect it to
support iPods and PDAs in the future.

Double A rechargeable batteries are by far the most
commonly used, but there are definitely times when C-cell and D-cell
batteries would be handy to have around. Rather than provide
rechargeable cells in a variety of sizes, Sanyo's Family Battery
Charger Kit comes with four AA batteries and a set a 'FlexBat'
adapters, hollow plastic cylinders that act as spacers to allow you to
use the rechargeable AAs inside C- or D-cell-sized spaces. Of course,
the AA cells won't run as long as the larger cells would, but in a
pinch it's a handy way to always have the size of battery you need
available.

This
isn't so useful for most of us, since it uses a Korean-standard phone
plug, but it's a neat idea all the same. The Mvolt-200 isn't just a
USB memory stick—it doubles as a emergancy cell phone recharger.
Manufacturer Wigobyte isn't making the Mvolt-200 yet, anyway, but is
currently looking for distributers for which it can become an OEM.

Turbo Tax for the Web
Turbo Tax for the Web
04/11/2005 11:56 PMI've purchased a shrink-wrapped copy of Turbo Tax every year for the last
five years or so. I was going to do it again this year, but Joe told
me to try their Web-based version (same link as above).
I've known about Turbo Tax for the Web, but I've always been a
little leery of it because (1) filing my taxes is a pretty complicated
affair, usually; and (2) I was always nervous about losing data, with
the Web being such a crude editing environment and all.
But I procrastinated enough that tonight I decided to give it a
shot out of a sincere lack of desire to drive to Office Max and pick
up a copy of the "real thing."
Uh, wow.
I hereby proclaim Turbo Tax for the Web as the greatest Web app I
have ever used. I gave up trying to figure out how they were
doing things about halfway through. Shortly after that, I promptly
forgot I was using a Web app rather than shrink-wrapped, installed
software, which is amazing because I can't think of a more tedious,
error-prone affair than filing a tax return. That means I can't think
of a process less well-suited for translation to the Web than
filing a tax return. Yet, it worked beautifully.
The whole experience just...flowed. I couldn't tell the difference
between when a segment of the page swapped out via Ajax, and when the
entire page reloaded (did it ever? I can't say I could tell...).
I looked at the source once, and I think it's some serious
client-side and Ajax voodoo.
And there's no cheating with ActiveX or other proprietary crap
— I completed my return in Firefox, no less. I didn't notice
any Java applets, either. It appeared to be pure — albeit
seriously complicated — JavaScript.
Fantastic tool. Hats off to Intuit. If you haven't filed yet
(three days to go...), give it a shot. You can test drive it all you
want — even to the point of completing your entire return
— and you only have to pay if you decide to file.

Mark Frauenfelder:
My buddy Carlo Longino tried the battery-powered Mach 3 Turbo razor.
He says it's not worth the $15. Too bad, I was going to buy one.
I switched to this from the Mach 3 Turbo, and frankly, I
can't tell any difference between the shave I get with the two.
Certainly not enough to justify the difference in price. I guess I've
got loyalty to Gillette since they sent me a free Sensor razor on my
18th birthday or something (that ploy worked, eh?) and I've generally
been pretty happy with their products and the results. But their
constant need to find some reason to jack up the already-high prices
of their razors is starting to wear thin.rally been pretty happy with
