David Pescovitz: Deskphone Oak Tree Enterprises sells all kinds of unusual retro-tech, from 1970s handheld videogames to vintage electric fans to this stately Western Electric "DecoTel" executive desk phone. This broken, yet classy, conversation piece will set you back $55. Oak Tree Enterprises' site design and text is a real treat too. Link (Thanks, Imaginary Foundation)

Carbonize some marshmallows and sell them as "Microwave Campfire Marshmallows." It's a surefire million dollar idea, assuming you figure out the marshmallows-explode-in-the-microwave part. But, you could probably just market your way around that: "Poppin' Fresh Microwave Campire Marshmallows (Caution: Be sure microwave door is securely closed.)" And while I'm not on the subject: Towards the bottom of the Dunkin' Donuts coffee cup, on the outside, it says "Caution: Contents extremely hot." I understand that lawyers made the company put that there, but why are coffee places serving us coffee that's extremely hot? And am I now responsible for reading the...

Halloween XI: Get the FUD 06/22/2004 10:44 AM
I've just seen a dispatch from the front lines of the FUD wars, Huw Lynes's report from one of Microsoft's Get The Facts roadshow in Great Britain. It's a fascinating read, especially when considered in context with Halloween VII and more recent leaks out of Microsoft. The outlines of the next stage in Microsoft's anti-open-source propaganda campaign are becoming clear. It's a good time to take stock of where we are, what our favorite evil empire is doing, and how best to respond.

Yay - it's Halloween, my favorite holiday of the year! At Kailee's suggestion, this year I'm dressing up as Stanley Yelnats. :-)

And since it's Halloween, it's time for our annual check of the Willard Library's Ghost Cam!

Getting Ready For Halloween

Getting Ready For Halloween 03/17/2005 03:09 AM

A few months ago, the wall clock in my living room mysteriously dropped onto the ground from where it's hanging, right at the stroke of midnight. (Or thereabout.) Closer examination shows no damage to the nail in the wall that hanged the clock. Anyway, that clock broke, and we replace it.

This morning, I woke up to discover my watch has stopped and one of the snaps broken. You guessed it -- the watch stopped;at just around midnight. (12.01 am)

Coincidence? I don't think so. :-)

But everyday is Halloween!

But everyday is Halloween! 09/01/2004 10:09 AM
David Pescovitz: An idiotic principal at a middle school in Kansas is cracking down on goths, sending them home if they dress in a way that may "disrupt the school environment or impede learning in the classroom." Principal Cherle Crain's quotes in this MTV.com article are amazingly asinine. Here's my favorite:
"Last week, a parent told me her two kids were talking about this at dinner," Crain said. "And one of them said 'I'm so glad Ms. Crain did this, because a Goth sat behind me last year and every single day he'd hiss at me like a snake.' And that impeded his learning."

Happy Halloween and welcome new mirrors

Happy Halloween and welcome new mirrors 10/31/2003 04:05 PM
We wish all of you a happy Halloween. Furthermore I would like to welcome our new mirrors to the Fink family. From Europe in Rijeka, Croatia a new full mirror joins us. This mirrors has been sponsored by the Jabucnjak Apple user group. This is our first mirror in Europe, so I hope that more will be joining us soon. Dave Schroeder from the University of Wisconsin in Madison is sponsoring a 100Mbit dedicated Master server. A. J. Wright and SunSITE@UTK are helping out with another full mirror in the United states. This raises our full mirror count to four and the rsync mirror count to five. We are happy to have such a great community back us up, but I know that more mirrors will join over time. I will not stop nagging you until Fink has its own mirror in every state of the USA. Yet, with such a brilliant community backing us up, I am not too worried about not reaching my goal very soon. Trick or treat! Our most wanted treat is more mirrors, so come forth Administrators and fill our bag. Information on how you can be a mirror can be found on the official mirroring website.
