In one of the most frightening acts since the inception armed
robbery, comes “blackmail via email”. Designed to
“psych-out” the target, the perpetrator then convinces the
victim that they can stop the harassment by sending the criminal a
specific amount of money….
The (Possible) Rise Of E-Blackmail
The (Possible) Rise Of E-Blackmail
12/29/2003 12:22 PMA Reuters report making the rounds today talks about
a
supposedly popular online scam these days, where someone sends an
email threatening to wipe out your hard drive or put child porn on it
- but who promise to go away if you pay them a modest fee (usually $20
to $30). The article claims that many people are falling for it, but
doesn't give much evidence to back this up. They quote an anonymous
"British detective" as their main source for this story. They also
admit that reports of the extortion are "tailing off", but say that's
only because most people won't report such e-blackmail. While I'm
sure that there are people trying this scam, and it's likely that
people do fall for it, I do wonder if it's really as big a problem as
the article suggests it is. Quoting an anonymous source and not a
single "victim" makes it seem like maybe this isn't such a big problem
at all.

Email blackmail shows that security
through intimidation doesn't work
01/02/2004 05:59 AMCrooks are sending email to naive office-workers, warning that their
computers have been 0wned and demanding small sums of money in
exchange for not getting them fired by filling their machines with
child-porn.
What caught my eye about this is that it preys on the fact that most
office-workers are required to sign documents saying that they
understand that all of their Internetn use can be monitored, and that
being caught with porn on your PC is a no-questions-asked firing
offense.
These two measures, meant to enhance "security" by intimidating
end-users into believing that they are universally surveilled and
readily fired, has instead had the consequence of turning them into
patsies for con-artists who exploit their fear to blackmail them.
In the annals of cybercrime, investigators acknowledge the racket is
one of the most difficult to crack. Because the ransom is small,
people tend to pay up and keep quiet...
The e-mail said several security vulnerabilities had been detected on
the university's network and that unless the e-mail recipient
transferred 20 euros ($25) to the author's online bank account, he
would release a series of viruses capable of deleting a host of
computer files.

The Next Attempt At Micropayments
The Next Attempt At Micropayments
11/17/2003 03:08 PMStop me if you've heard this one before... Suddenly,
new
micropayment technologies are hot, and everyone is talking about
the billions of dollars that could be made by selling content for just
a little bit of money. All of these estimates use silly math. They
talk about how a large number of little transactions adds up to a
large number. That may be true, but it makes a huge, unstated,
assumption: that there will be a large number of transactions. Notice
that the article linked here never looks at things from the consumer
side to see if people actually want to be nickeled and dimed for every
piece of content they find online. There may be some places where
micropayment fees will work - but it's going to be difficult to make
significant money that way. First off, people pay money to get online
because they want to access content. If everything is going behind a
paid wall, suddenly they feel like they're getting double-billed. Why
do they need to pay to get online if there's nothing there?
Furthermore, each bit of "paid content" competes with free content.
Admittedly, if the blocked off content is very very good or comes with
some other advantages, some people will pay for it. However, the vast
majority of folks will hunt out a "good enough" substitute that they
can find for free. Also, the article completely ignores the important
comparison that content providers need to make if they're going to
block off content. It talks about the potential to make money off of
micropayments, but that's a useless number by itself. The important
point is whether or not they can make
more from micropayments
than they could from offering free content supported by some other
business model? I can see plenty of content providers jumping on this
bandwagon because they haven't been able to figure out how to properly
create an online site that makes money - but they may discover that it
doesn't do them very much good. There is some content for which
micropayments will work - but it's a very limited set - and most
content providers aren't going to think this out before throwing up a
paid wall.
