Apple Computer Inc. said in a statement given to MacCentral on Friday that the company would be fixing securi ty flaws uncovered in Mac OS X Jaguar by Cambridge, MA-based security research firm @Stake earlier this week. Some have speculated that Apple would not update the older Jaguar operating system since the release of Mac OS X Panther on October 24, 2003, but Apple has put that speculation to rest.

Security consulting firm, @Stake issued three security advisories for Apple's Mac OS X operating system late last night. The advisories affect Mac OS X 10.2.8 and lower and do not appear to affect the company's recently released Panther operating system. Apple has released an updated version of Safari, its Web browser, intended specifically for users of Mac OS X v10.2 "Jaguar." The new v1.0.3 release "improves the Safari rendering engine to expand third party application support and delivers the latest security enhancements," according to Apple's notes. The latest release of Safari for Mac OS X v10.3 remains v1.2.

Mo re holes in Windows revealed: Three new "critical" security holes in Windows, even on machines patched with SP2. Keep patchin', folks.

Symantec has also warned about a second vulnerability in a Windows component called "LoadImage" that is used to load desktop icons, cursors, or bitmap images. A flaw in the way LoadImage processes image files could allow malicious hackers to use specially crafted images to trigger an overflow and place their own code on vulnerable machines. Images that trigger the flaw could be sent in e-mail messages or downloaded from Web pages controlled by the hackers, Symantec said.
