02/01/2005 09:42 PMThis morning's
Romenesko brought
this link to a Sacramento Bee column about how some
newspapers have begun to use databases to track errors and
corrections. Reasonable enough, but maybe not far enough, and it got
me thinking.
Software development teams have used bug tracking software for ages now
-- why not journalists? But keeping it in-house, as the papers the Bee
cites seem to do, limits the value of the approach.
I'm spending a lot of time these days around open-source software
developers, and they take the logic of this approach one step
further: Major open source projects maintain public bug
databases. Anyone can come along and post a bug report. It's like
opening a trouble ticket: developers will have a look, see if your
complaint is new or duplicates an existing problem; over time the
database provide a permanent record of the resolution (or
non-resolution) of the issue.
The model doesn't map perfectly onto journalism, but it's not too
far off: Let people file "bug reports" if they believe your
publication has published something in need of correcting. The
publication can respond however it seems appropriate: If the complaint
is frivolous, you point that out; if it's a minor error of spelling or
detail, you fix it; if it's a major error, you deal with it however
you traditionally deal with major errors -- but you've left a trail
that shows what happened. However you respond, you've opened a channel
of communication, so that people who feel you've goofed don't just go
off to their corners (or their blogs!) feeling that you're
unresponsive and irresponsible.
I know this idea will horrify a lot of editors and reporters, but I
think an adventurous newsroom could benefit from the transparency and
the accountability. Maybe someone's already doing this out there -- if
so, it would be great to see what we can learn.

Powell forces press aide to let him
answer Meet the Press question
05/17/2004 06:11 AMColin Powell appeared on Meet the Press this weekend, and his
appearance was marred by his press secretary moving the camera and
attempting to end the interview early when Russert, the interviewer,
started to ask a hardball question about the fictional Nigerian
yellow-cake uranium that Powell used as an excuse to go to war in
Iraq.
Most noteworthy about this event was that Powell, rebuked the
press-secretary on air, demanded that the camera be trained on him
again, and then answered the question, describing the intelligence
he'd received as "deliberately misleading."
Lisa Rein's got the video up -- highly recommended.
EMILY MILLER, STATE DEPARTMENT PRESS AIDE: You're off.
SECRETARY POWELL: I am not off.
EMILY MILLER, PRESS AIDE: No. They can't use it, they're editing it.
SECRETARY POWELL: He's still asking the questions.
EMILY MILLER, PRESS AIDE: He was not ...
SECRETARY POWELL: Tim, I am sorry I lost you.
MR. RUSSERT: I am right here Mr. Secretary. I would hope they would
put you back on camera. I don't know who did that.
EMILY MILLER, PRESS AIDE: He was going to go for another five
minutes.
SECRETARY POWELL: We've really scre...
MR. RUSSERT: I think that was one of your staff Mr. Secretary. I
don't think that's appropriate.
SECRETARY POWELL: Emily, get out of the way. Bring the camera back
please. (Camera returns to the interview subject) I think we're back
on Tim, go ahead with your last question.

NTT DoCoMo is showing
off a set of binoculars equipped with object-recognition capability.
The binocs identify certain objects and uses image acquisition to
display pertinent details about whatever you're staring at. The
examples they offer include looking at a passing plane and seeing the
flight number and destination displayed in the eyepiece, or looking at
a flower and having its name shown to you. This sort of technology
could make its way into camera phones and the like, perhaps affording
us an automatic photo-tagging system somewhere down the road.
Of course, we're happy to aimlessly pontificate about this
technology since we have no idea how they actually work.

information about a new phone developed for DoCoMo's FOMA network in
Japan, the F900iT. Powered by Symbian, the F900iT includes miniSD
support, Bluetooth, a full-megapixel camera, and dual screens -- one
of which is a touch screen (and the smaller external screen is OLED).
Basically, it's completely awesome, and you'll get an equivalent one
in about two years.
