06/24/2004 07:42 PMMicrosoft Corp., author of the Microsoft® Caller ID for E-mail
proposal, and Meng Weng Wong, co-founder and CTO of Pobox.com and
author of the Sender Policy Framework (SPF), have announced today that
they have successfully converged the two proposals into one
specification named Sender ID and submitted to the Internet
Engineering Task Force (IETF) for consideration as an industrywide
standard for e-mail authentication as part of the IETF's efforts to
define effective industry Internet e-mail standards to address the
problem of spam. Sender ID is designed to help verify the source of
e-mail to help eliminate domain spoofing and provide greater
protection against phishing schemes. By providing a unified
specification, Microsoft and Wong hope to simplify industry adoption
of effective e-mail authentication technology, thereby helping more
swiftly provide greater spam protection to e-mail users worldwide.

08/15/2004 12:42 AMA new Wi-Fi standard that promises faster WLANS is one step closer to
becoming reality:
The WWiSE (worldwide spectrum efficiency) group said it has developed
technology for review by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic
Engineers (IEEE) 802.11n task group, which is overseeing a
next-generation Wi-Fi standard capable of sustaining data throughput
exceeding 100Mbps.
The proposal is based on MIMO-OFDM (multiple input, multiple
output-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) technology, which
achieves higher speeds by employing two antennas at each end of the
signal (one for transmitting, one for receiving) instead of one at
each terminus.

AOL Signs Off From Sender ID
AOL Signs Off From Sender ID
09/17/2004 06:43 AMAmerica Online has decided not to fully support Microsoft's Sender ID
spam-fighting plan after the Internet Engineering Task Force and the
open-source community expressed intellectual property concerns.
"AOL will now not be moving forward with full deployment of the
Sender ID protocol," spokesman Nicholas Graham said in a
statement sent via e-mail Thursday. Instead, the Dulles,
Virginia-based Internet service provider will support only the Sender
Policy Framework to fight spam by verifying the source of e-mail sent
to its users, he said.
AOL's rejection comes a week after an IETF group considering Sender ID
as a standard said the proposal needed rewriting. Earlier this month,
the open-source groups Apache Software Foundation and Debian Project
dismissed Sender ID because the license would prevent them from
supporting the technology. AOL is concerned about the lack of
acceptance for Sender ID in the open-source community, Graham said.
Additionally, the ISP is afraid that recent changes to Sender ID will
make it incompatible with the original SPF specification, he said. AOL
had endorsed Sender ID when it was submitted to the IETF in June.

Too Much Fuss Over Sender ID
Too Much Fuss Over Sender ID
09/02/2004 02:06 AM"Why all the fuss when a spam-free channel is already available and
working 24/7 -- without infrastructure changes?" asks UseBestMail
author Martel Firing. The Sender-ID system proposed by IETF and backed
by Microsoft, Cloudmark, Symantec, and others requires infrastructure
changes and may take years, while UseBestMail's spam-free channel is
infrastructure neutral and is here now. He then goes on to question
sender-ID's blacklist, sender reputation and law enforcement models,
which he maintains won't do much to prevent spam given the proven
ingenuity of the spammers themselves. [PRWEB Sep 2, 2004]
