WWDC 2004
06/28/2004 02:59 PMSteve Jobs just wrapped up his keynote at this year's World Wide
Developer Conference and aside from the 30-inch Cinema HD Display
the primary focus of his talk was Tiger, the next generation of OS X
due in 2005. Some highlights of Tiger include:
- Spotlight - A new search utility to help you find
files, apps, contacts, etc.. with greater ease. At first glance it
looks a lot like Quicksilver, a tool
I absolutely love.
- Safari RSS - Safari will now be able to read rss
feeds and display them within the browser. Now collecting your
favorite rss feeds will be as simple as bookmarking a page.
- Dashboard - A new tool for displaying and using
handy 'widgets'. Seems a lot like Konfabulator, another cool tool
I use religiously.
- Automator - A new visual scripting tool that
appears useful for creating workflows among Apple's core apps and the
iLife suite. Looks like Actions in Photoshop to me.
- iChat AV - Adds support for up to four people
video chatting and up to 10 people in an audio conference. The
screenshots are pretty cool.
Apparently, the Moscone Center was decorated in posters taking jabs at
Microsoft with phrases such as "Redmond, we have a problem." and "This
should keep Redmond busy". Wish I coulda been there.
I'm kind of disappointed that there weren't any iMac announcements,
but as we've seen in the last month, Apple doesn't feel the need to
save their major product announcements for their highly publicized
events. Just check their site every Tuesday and you might see
something new.
