As will
surprise nobody who knows me, the shininess of the Firebird database
server had been blinding me since I posted that interview yesterday. It was calling my name, so I just had
to download and install it.
I'm extremely happy with what I found — it's a free database
server with a ton of features you're not going to find in MySQL.
There's a self-extracting Windows installer, it installs itself as a
service, and it even gives you a little Control Panel applet to manage
it.
It has support for foreign keys, views, triggers, and stored
procedures (with what looks like a very rich procedure language).
There's full PHP support through the ibase_* set of functions and it's
supported in the ADODB database
abstraction library.
There's not much in the way of free clients. It comes with a
command line client, of course, but I didn't find any free graphical
clients. There's this one and
this one, but they run from $79 to
$250.
I still don't quite have a handle on the genesis of the project. I
gather it came out of Borland's InterBase
product, but I'm not sure if InterBase continues, or if it was
abandoned (there's a Windows 2003 version of it, so it's probably
still alive in some form). Firebird (and InterBase) penetration
appears to be most heavy in Europe. It's commonly used with the Delphi language (another Borland
product).
In browsing some of the message boards about Firebird, I got the
same...vibe that I got about MySQL five years or so ago. There's a
lot of buzz, and there seems to be a lot of transfer from MySQL to
Firebird. The talk all seems to be exceedingly positive.
So why would you use MySQL over Firebird given that the latter has
support for so many more features and is just as free? I guess I'm a
little more confident with MySQL's battle-worthiness, given that it's
been around the block so many times. (But by the same token,
InterBase wasn't in beta or anything — that was a production
quality database server.)
So am I ready to switch all my stuff over to Firebird? No...not
yet. But I don't think I'll look at MySQL quite the same way ever
again. This seems like a very attractive option.

Upgrading Firebird to Firefox?
02/15/2004 05:25 AMI've been debating about upgrading from Firebird to Firefox, the new
Mozilla based browser, but have seen enough problem reports to decide
to hold off until after this week's trip to Colorado. Plus, I'm not
looking forward to reinstalling all my extensions -- 26 at last count.
And the notice on the official Firebird extensions site,During periods
of heavy use, the extensions are taken offline to help maintain a
healthy, responsive server. Please check back later! For now, please
use Extension Room.seems especially clueless. As far as I'm concerned,
the whole point of Firebird / Firefox is the extensions. I also don't
understand why Ben Goodger and the other developers are so opposed to
the Tab Browser Extensions feature set? I understand that they have
some problems with how the features are implemented, but to reject
including or creating a better extension for some of the most popular
features of Firebird / Firefox is nuts. I'd be curious to hear what
other Firebird users' upgrade experiences have been....
Using FeedDemon with Mozilla and
Firebird
Using FeedDemon with Mozilla and
Firebird
12/16/2003 06:44 AMI beta tested FeedDemon this summer and liked it well enough, but
decided not to switch from using Firebird's brilliant RSS Reader panel
because FeedDemon depended on IE, and because Nick Bradbury decided
not to make the feature requests I wanted in order to make FeedDemon
easier to use on a laptop with a pointing device. FeedDemon is very
pretty, but it would be a lot better if a 2-pane interface like
Eudora's was an option. I still love RSS Reader panel, and will
continue to use it for my daily reads, but it is awkward to have more
than 15 or so RSS feeds in the side panel, and my list of sites that I
like to drop in on is longer than that, so I've been looking around.
Today I ran across a post by Erik Arvidsson on how to patch FeedDemon
to work with Mozilla and Firebird. To quote Erik: Download Mozilla
ActiveX Control 1.5 and install it. I guess one could use the one
packaged with Mozilla Firebird but this one did not work out of the
box. Download a small program called IEPatcher. I found this from a
different site that has some good information.Run the IEPatcher.exe
and select the FeedDemon directory and patch the FeedDemon.exe file
This creates a file called moz_FeedDemon.exe. Run this and update all
your shortcuts to point to this exe file instead. Brilliant. (Although
it should be noted that I have not been able to try this myself yet.).
Now that Nick Bradbury has announced that he is ready to ship
FeedDemon, I'll have to give it another try, this time with Mozilla
and Firebird. And it seems worth trying to patch the two other IE
dependent programs I used to use on a daily basis, Mybase, and
Surfsaver....

Databases: Helen Borrie on the Future of Firebird: Here's an
interesting interview with one of the people behind Firebird, an emerging
open-source, multi-platform database server.
It's a fork of a mature commercial database called
InterBase. InterBase is an enterprise-level database — Firebird
is the same, but better. You'll find Firebird behind a number of Web
sites, storing records for telecom companies and managing data for
point-of-sales systems — just about anywhere you might find
Oracle or [Microsoft] SQL Server.
Firebird, you may remember, was the reason that the Mozilla browser
project had to change its
name to Firefox.

RSS native parsing in the next Firebird
02/10/2004 02:42 AMThis is new to me. I was checking out the nightly builds of
Firebird 0.8 betas (windows and linux, mac<
/a>) and they'
ve got an rss button and panel that parses RSS, with titles
linking to the main window. Slick, but they need to let you track
which ones have new/old items.
update: It turns out I'm actually a dumbass. I
installed this RSS
extension so long ago I forgot about it, and because I never saw
it show up in any menu, I figured it never "took" on my Firebird
install. Then when I had the new nightly build the toolbars were out
of whack on first run so I went to customize them and saw the RSS
button for the first time, and assumed it came with Firebird 0.8. My
bad.
