06/25/2004 06:41 PMWith the third RC of PHP 5 released on the 8th of June and the Zend
PHP 5 Coding Contest, it is easy to see that the full stable release
of PHP 5 is just around the corner. At this very late stage of
development, PHP Magazine got David Mytton, of olate.com, to interview
the two original creators of PHP and Zend – Zeev Suraski and Andi
Gutmans – to find out more about their lives as developers of possibly
the most popular Web programming language ever!

09/30/2002 01:53 PMZeev, what tips do you have for a beginner using PHP?
There are lots of gotcha's that can be avoided if one follows a few
rules. First - always enable E_NOTICE's while you're
developing/debugging. Make your code E_NOTICE-clean, and you'd be
likely to produce code of much higher quality. Also - use a debugger,
instead of printing out debug info. Once you get used to it - you
become a hell of a lot more productive than you have before. I went
through the same phase (not with PHP, but with C) and I'm not sure how
I managed to get anything done before I started using debuggers.

Zeev Interview: PHP is not going to
become a Java clone
08/05/2002 10:44 PMThe Community debated in the mailing list violently the new
language extensions. There are many, which would see PHP gladly as a
kind Java clone. But then one can take equal Java. We want the best
solution for the Web development. PHP remains a procedural language,
at least in the regard that inserted functionality is offered not over
objects, but by means of functions.
We serve two different requirements with PHP. For a risers or small
tasks the comparatively simple procedural beginning is suitable.
Larger projects however can be mastered with object-oriented
programming better. Particularly we come to meet this target group
with PHP 5. -- Mangled using the Google translator.

Zeev Suraski Interview: Part 2
07/25/2002 03:34 AMFact is, PHP 4, just as it is, is perfect for most users. Sure, the
new engine improvements are going to make it much more fun and easy to
create large OO apps, but, chances are, that there'll be no
'revolutionary' PHP versions anytime in the foreseeable future, in the
same sense that PHP 4 was revolutionary at the time.
This feeling is a bit depressing, of course, since helping build a
revolutionary version of PHP is much more fun than improving on
something which is already good ; In my opinion, that's the key reason
for the feeling of lack of leadership. -- Zeev
"tri" Actually there's a lot of possibilities where working on PHP can
remain interesting to hard-core C developers. If you look at it from
another angle, all the easy stuff that anyone (who has done a course
on compilers) can do has been done; only the he-man alpha geek stuff
is left.
- Porting PHP to CLR, JVM and Parrot.
- Adding unicode and large number support.
- Cleaning up all the HTML in PHP so that it works well for GTK and
CLI applications.
- Multiple inheritance.
- Developing a version of PHP that implements threads.
- Improving SRM, Derick's PHP application server, or developing an
even better one.
- Improving PEAR and porting it to C++.
The very fact that Zeev says there is not much to look forward to
shows the need for a leader to cheer the troops on and steer
the ship.

If you also blog, you'll probably find something useful in it. It
was good to talk to Rebecca and get into some hearty questions (mostly
in part 2). I'm used to doing interviews with reporters writing for a
general audience so it was refreshing to get really specific
weblog-oriented questions directed at me.
